"I'm going to give you an A- because I believe you could do better" is the most professor like thing The Professor has ever said.
96
"I can make a C+ feel like a Congressional Medal of Honor and an A- feel like a slap in the face."
-Taylor Mali, 2002: “What Teachers Make.”
@@randywehrs my SO is a teacher and they are incredibly underpaid; however, that speech is incredibly pretentious.
Comment ~900 feels good. 👍🏻
Mine just came in yesterday and I love them! (Minus the small D and a line that may have been my fault). My son, who was 4 or 5 at the time, saw one of my cards and drew it just for fun without me asking or instructing. He drew a Massacre Wurm and a little unfortunate goblin. Once I saw the custom sleeve option I was very excited to immortalize this drawing on a sleeve. I'm very pleased! He's 6 now and thought it was pretty cool too.
You are legally required to post a picture of your sleeves now.
@@Pringlesman if youtube allowed it! I'll put it in Prof's Facebook post! 🤗
Annndd, that's not allowed either! 🤷♂️
@@michaelatkinson88 To Twitter, you don't get let off the hook that easily!
@@Ahayzo are you telling me I have to go create a Twitter now?!
As far as first entries go, I find what they're offering really enticing. The price is to be expected, and I am fine with it. The most important aspect - the Dragon Shield durability is there. All that's left is refinement, and their track record is good. High hopes for these going forward when I end up biting the bullet myself.
honestly their price was a touch under what i was expecting them to charge, which would have been closer to 35/box before shipping.
The Professor is that one teacher who says “Yes, you did an amazing job, and maybe you deserve an A, but I know you can do better, so I’m giving you an A-. I believe in you.”
Ah Professor, never change.
That small "D" is most probably used in an attempt to prevent resellers using Dragon Shield as a print shop. If it wasn't there, someone could bulk order a few hundred boxes in a few different designs(probably of stolen art) and pass it off as a "boutique" or Etsy product.
Dang that's unfortunate. Do you think they could put a big dragon shield logo on the inside of the sleeve instead? In a way that makes it so if you put a card in the sleeve it'll cover the logo? That way people still know it's dragon shield but it gets hidden most of the time?
It's hard to imagine any reseller making profit from these.
@@drongobrat6471 I think that would actually be the way to go. Seems like a good idea.
@@drongobrat6471 They could do something like Ultrapro, where most (all?) of their sleeves have a small hologram that says Ultrapro.
@@shinobu153 no logos please, that little holo logo has bugged me for years 😁
Tried out Dragon Shield mattes on your previous recommendations, Prof, I was an ultra pro man for years.
One set of mattes in jet and I soon bought 1000 to re-sleeve every deck I owned and the number grows with each new deck I brew. Glad to see they continue to deliver the very best.
Thanks for the recommendation and for continuing in your own excellence with every video!
Respect for Prof when he shows his concern about Yugioh card size
All that time spent with Post Malone has taught the prof the best way to relate to the younger generation 👀 1:15
😂😂😂
Prof's been simping for XTR33M THICCNESS forever :D
we love that shit here :)

Help step bro i'm stuck 😂😂😂
😂
Fun fact about the whole Japanese size thing. For at least Yugioh (I can’t speak for other JP sized games), double sleeving just became allowed, and JP sized sleeves fit just perfectly inside a dragon shield sleeve, so to a degree I think the lack of smaller sizes is partially mitigated there. Still a definite complaint, but there are reasonable workarounds :)
You weren't *allowed* to double sleeve before? Was is because of some cheating thing?
Yugioh judges have also warned against using standard size sleeves as the outer sleeve for tournament play as the extra width risks card marking infractions if the cards are able to noticeable move around inside the sleeve.
@@kmatt2335 knowing those games most likely
@@kmatt2335 Yeah, it was a cheating/marked cards thing, supposedly.
Jp perfect fit - jp sleeve- standard perfect fit - standard sleeve - over sleeve - top loader

I get excited for TCC product reviews the same way people used to get excited about new episodes of Walling Dead or Game of Thrones.
I love the takeaway at the end. "You can do better, so do it! You've got this!" Despite the negative comments, some good ol' optimism and positivity there. You really love to see that.
I bought those along with some college friends in June, we made a 10 pack order and it was well worth it... It was definitely one of the highlight of the 2 weeks holiday retreat we had. Much more satisfying than the modern boxes we opened. Highly recommend especially if one of your group has crazy drawing skills.
I was thinking of ordering some, how has the durability been so far?
@@jaytoosweet5365 I am actually one of the few people that do not have friends nearby to play with, and I have been moving so all I can speak about is the 2weeks and transport. No dmg, wear or tear, regular dragon shield quality. I also do not shuffle like a madman.
Anyways from afar and after some time you forget the "D", though it is there, and you might find it weird /unsettling
I believe the “D” is the registration mark used for the screenprinting process used to align each color printed. Most clothing has these markings but theyre usually hidden within the design. I hope DS knows they can hide these in the corners lol.
I agree with you that it's a registration mark (which they made in the style of their logo, because why wouldn't they?), but I don't think they can hide it because of their printing process. Whatever process they use that allows the art to not interfere with the shuffle feel (like every other brand) clearly doesn't allow them to print with bleedspace (hence the white border) so they had to put it in a visible location.
I was looking through the comments basically for this. I run a large printing press that makes paper cups and registration marks like that help keep things aligned automatically and ensure consistency.
Usually makes like that are put somewhere on the paper that gets cut off or folded in where you can't see it. If you turn a paper cup upside down you can usually see a little + mark of overlapping colors from each print layer. If its not there you can unroll the top rim and there will probably be a bunch of black O's with different colored circles inside them, those are mainly used as a solid patch to check the colors but we also use them as a guide to keep things relatively lined up.
I used to work at a screen printing place. Those registration marks you mention are never part of the design. They’re put in each corner of the design and then used when aligning the screens. They get taped off when actually printing
“Reading the card explains the card.” Love it.
Hope to see those sleeves @ the next I hate your deck with the prof episode
Reading lurrus does not explain lurrus
Reading Anowon, the Ruin Thief doesn't really explain Anowon, the Ruin Thief.
I’ve been telling anyone who will listen about the dual matte sleeves. Such a nice shuffle feel. That said, I’ve had 2 split on me in the last couple months so I wouldn’t say from my experience that they’re as strong as normal dragon shields. Still an excellent product, love the colors too
'Bad Wolf' on the college noticeboard still makes me chuckle, and coincidentally the name of my sarulf, realm eater commander deck.
I commissioned art specifically for these sleeves but, wanted to wait for the review before pulling the trigger. Thanks again for a great review Prof. Much appreciated.
Yes! I requested for a review of these a few weeks ago.
Prof, you’re the best!
The "D", the border, the not-quite-matte back. These might be best in class custom sleeves but that's quite a few drawbacks for nearly $30 a box! Think I'll be waiting for the next version of these before biting the bullet as I imagine Dragon Shield will find ways around all those issues in time.
What i really love about this channel. The explanations are super to understand. Even a non native speaker will understand it. Thank you Prof.
Happy to hear that!
I absolutely LOVE the dual mattes so much. I hope they continue to come out more colors. While I love DS to begin with (it's all I use) the dual mattes make shuffling my EDH deck so much better and I'm in love with the black inner backing.
The D is actually branding. It is an outline of the Dragon Shield crest/logo.
It's horrific and ruins the product.
Can't they make something better looking tho?
I'm glad that the custom sleeves are actually worthwhile. My wife and I have been wanting a solid sleeve to put artwork on for specific commander decks and with these I think we have something we can go with, if they upgrade them in the future, even better 😁
Been waiting for this review. 🙌
“That extreme THICCness we all love playing with.” - The Professor
"There is no little D"
Professor confirmed bi?
I'm really interested in the custom sleeves and thank you for this review!
One of the things I'd like to see them do is bulk discount. Like, buy a full case of one style of custom sleeve and get a discount more closely matching the regular price (or at least dropping from 2x the price to 1.5x.
Thanks for taking the hit Prof, I want to make a Naruto Sleeve Set for my Yuriko deck to stay on theme.
Yooooooo I love your channel! Didn't know you were a Magic player. And of course you would play Yuriko 🙄 lol
Haha, I have a ton of old foil Naruto cards. I've been thinking about attempting to do foil peels and altering my Yuriko deck.
Love your content, btw.
Unfortunately, they don’t accept copyrighted work without proof of permission
Gigachad Prof for buying the customs sleeves yourself instead of using the free coupon for the investment feel. Appreciate all that you do
Note that the brushes art sleeve you've shown as an example of a borderless art sleeve HAS a border, it's just the same color as the background. It likely has to do with how the sleeve is colored. And the D is likely for their printing machines to be able to recognise the orientation of the card correctly. OR it might be a legal constraint.
Good, honest, and fair review. Well done professor! This is what keeps us coming back for more content. Dragon shield is a very awesome product but what I love about their company is the continuing growth. Professor captures my sentiments on the custom work perfectly; however I would be happy to pay the amount professor did IF the border options were available and “D” we’re not included.
Wait wait wait. You used both Delver of Secrets AND Huntmaster of the Fells as your test cards for those sleeves?? Are you trying to send Delver of Brews a message here, professor??
I always come to your channel just to study the art of choosing the right sleeves. Thank you for doing all the hard work and just delivering it all perfectly in your videos! Been watching for a long while now and I've never looked back since 🥰
Wow....I am buying these immediately. This company owes you BIG TIME.
I would hypothesize that the little D at the bottom is probably a way of aligning the printed sheets so they are sliced evenly. With their own art, they mass-produce, and can almost certainly align them easily with their machinery. With customs, they are *not* mass-produced, and likely needed a way to make it fit smoothly and quickly that is consistent across all arts.
My friend ordered some of these custom sleeves and we got to play using them today, 100% the good old dragon shield way. This video is 100% accurate. Thank you for spreading the good word!
I watched this video months back, but I watched again today and wanted to say that I LOVE that suit. Fits well, great pattern, and overall just a great piece. Claps to you, Professor!
I love my dragon shield sleeves!! When I heard of custom design for them I knew I had to get a few. The small D at the bottom might be annoying at first but me personally I don't have much of a problem with it. My only issue is finding a photo to use for the design xD
I love the fact that even though you got 5 free for review you STILL made an anonymous account and bought your own. You are the most trustworthy and full review of products
First off that sleeve toss at the end was slick af, and second I very excited about the future of these custome sleeves. Dragon Shield has always had outstanding quality and they continue to get better over time. 👏
i just love the "Bad Wolf" on the pinboard in the background!
Sharing to our TCG group based in Canada . D&Ks TCG. I appreciate the honest review and couldn't agree more with you about the newer Dragon Shield sleeves. I picked up the lilac for a digimon deck and was blown away wuth them. Keep uo the good work professor!
I've been watching your channel since you dubbed ultra-pro pro mattes as the McDonalds of card sleeves and I can't believe how much the channel has grown. Your production value, scripts, and sets have only improved as time has gone on. Here's to eight more years of excellent content.
I was literally going to pick up a matte dual tonight. This helps ease my mind. Thank you, Prof!
One can only wonder what drives this company to excell and improve their appearing simple product further and further. I am amazed!
Now I kind of want to use those "Reading the card explains the card" sleeves for an EDH deck full of russian cards. :p
If it only was russian... My Mono White pile is now at almost 50% Russian, Chinese, japanese and Korean in the nonbasics. Gets a bit unreadable, no Matter where you're from
I heard if you do that they will expedite your order. It'll be Russian out the door in no time
I recently purchased a few dual matte sleeves, and I agree, the shuffle feel is awesome and the colors are sweet!
They are!
@@TolarianCommunityCollege Lagoon and Eucalyptus are my favorites.
I’ve got 2 sets of the custom art sleeves and 1 set of the dual mattes and the shuffle feel is identical in my opinion. When I first shuffled the custom art sleeves I was honestly taken aback by the excellent shuffle feel. The other knocks on the custom art sleeves are totally valid, but that one doesn’t jive with my own experience.
I love how spiritomb fits so perfectly into your profile pic. Off topic, but I really like it.
I personally have been sleeving my Yugioh decks in KMC Perfect Fit inner sleeves inside japanese size Dragon Shield Matte sleeves. It can take a few attempts to double sleeve a card as the inner sleeve can slide while double sleeving but I found a technique that works well. Once sleeved up they are basically flawless outside of being a little poofy. Shuffle feel is great. If this could be replicated with those art sleeves I would love to put my own art on them.
I don't mind the white border but the little D is quite distracting. Hopefully we'll see them improve and get that A+!
I’ve been wanting a quality product like this for at least a decade now. Nice to see that they exist.
I really enjoy how even though you were sent some free boxes that you went and bought some to give a more personalized perspective! Props to you professor!
The restrictions are likely a retooling price compromise. Based on that I assume: Color selection is the most likely option. The numbers might also be a technical limitation. Think of the sheets the cards are printed to as an example.I agree with the A-. I mean i have some idea of the logistics so I actually expected a way higher price. So 25$ is actually very reasonable at this quality.
I've been looking at several places to get custom sleeves, and they're usually a lower quality and closer to $50. $25 for your own sleeves, in this quality, is not bad at all given they're a one off, and need to be retooled for each order.
I absolutely love the color of the lagoon dual mattes. I wouldn't, however, consider them perfect. I've had 2 tear in just a few months of only playing the deck once a week (I use them on my League deck at my LGS)
I appreciate evaluating the product on its current state rather than what you "wish it could be". All those things you mention are nice to have... However, it doesn't change the value of what you got. Nice review. A+
I just noticed the flyer in the back to study abroad in Amonkhet, 'the safest place in the multiverse'. The prof really gets an A+ for set dressing.
I dont play magic but i really like listening to your voice. It calms me.
I like how Pokémon still gets mentioned in these reviews even though we haven't had a Pokémon video in a long time
While I don't have recurring Pokemon reviews, I include them to let people know these sleeves work on the game. Same for FaB and Digimon.
People who play pokemon might be looking for sleeves too :)
Thanks for this - was thinking about buying but didn't know what cons there might be. Your review pointed them out, and I was able to determine it was still worth purchasing. Thank you for the peace of mind and fair warnings!
The “D” and the price are the only thing holding me back. Thanks for the review!
I'm find with the "D" on the custom sleeves, I noticed it at first glance but I'm sure it will be unnoticeable over time as you get used to it. These Matte Duals are the perfect sleeves in my eye, taking the beauty of colored backs with black inner like the Eclipse in a Dragon Shield product is music to my ears! Love seeing how easy it is to flip double-sleeved transform cards as the Eclipse's are not as easy and find they're actually quite short with some of the card nearly exposed when double-sleeved. These are my new sleeves from now on!
Convinced me to try the Matte Duals. Buyin Ultra Pro for ~20 years, not goin bacc. New favorite sleeves, Thanks Prof!
Hey Toralian, i enjoy your Sleeve review series and would like to indicate one odd one for you to review, if you manage to get your hands on one. It´s a Brazilian brand that makes good quality products for the local market, since the conversion rates here makes even a ultrapro satin tower be a "gourmet" product. The name of the sleeves is CentralShield by Central Acessórios.
I hope you do a review on YourPlaymat sleeves. A lot of channels have been sponsored by them, however the ones who aren’t seem to be disappointed with the print quality. It would help with my decision a lot.
I’ve been waiting for this review for so long! Glad to see it here now
"Reading the card explains the card"... That in direct reference to the latest episode of I Hate Your Deck? I love their series. And Prof, watching you play commander there, is by far, one of the most entertaining EDH game plays I've ever seen.
It's his schtick ever since, it's not just a one-time thing on IHYD...
I've been waiting for a review of this for a while, no company I knew of had plague doctor themed card sleeves, so I knew I needed customs. Just placed my order today! Glad they're the same quality as regular Dragon Shield sleeves
Thank you for your advice professor. As a matter of fact I just sleeved up my 1st deck in dual matte yesterday. Thank you for the video.
Honestly, didnt even notice the little "D" on the bottom until you mentioned it. The option to customize your sleeves is pretty awesome!
Just saw these in my lgs yesterday and had to pick them up to see how they are and damn do I love them!
That small "D" is actually the outline of the Dragon Shield logo.
We already knew society's views on the small Ds...
But now we know the professor feels the same way as well...
Thanks for the feedback, Prof! Much appreciated! 🙏
2:33 i love the bad wolf on the board!!!!
These reviews are highly appreciated. Thank you kindly.
Always helps me before I make a purchase, thanks again Prof!
I like the “BAD WOLF” on the board behind the Professor!
This man is just absolutely overflowing with integrity. Keep up the great work
I purchased a set of Dual Mattes and a set of Katanas to replace 7-year old Ultra Pro Matte sleeves. For any viewers looking for a comparison against the Katanas, my opinion is that both are great sleeves with pros and cons and, after comparing with OG Dragon Shield sleeves, both are better than them.
I like the compact tightness of the Katanas more, with less room at the top edge since it gives the overall card a more uniform feel. The tightness makes it difficult to slide in cards sleeved with KMC Perfect Hards, though- I used two cards to get my cards in and stretch it out a bit. After doing that and successfully getting the first card in, it's a bit easier to slide in another double sleeved cards should you decide to swap cards out. With plain Perfect Fits though, the tightness is not much of an issue.
The Dual Mattes having some extra top edge space, is pretty susceptible to dust if you live in a dustier environment. They are also more susceptible to bending than the more tightly fit Katanas. But it is a much better experience to double sleeve with Perfect Hards with Dual Mattes. Even though dust is not a problem for the Katanas as it is the Dual Mattes for me, grime or having random particles stuck to the fronts of the card sleeves, is a thing with Katanas more so than the Dual Mattes.
Shuffle experience of the Katanas is slightly better but not by much. It is definitely easier to mindlessly shuffle with Katanas though- I never feel worried about bending corners thanks to the Hards and tighter overall fit making cards feel more sturdy. I am less worried about the opening of the sleeve getting caught accidentally as well. Despite my concerns with the Dual Mattes and shuffling, however, they are holding up quite well.
The Dual Mattes also stack much better than the Katanas. Not just because Katanas are initially more slippery, but because the looser, more comfortable fit makes it easier for cards in inner sleeves to lie flat. This might be less of a problem if I used Perfect Fits rather than Hards with my Katanas, but I greatly prefer the feel of Katanas sleeves with Hards. Dual Mattes give a very neat, uniform feel compared with the Katanas (the backs of the Dual Mattes are also more matte than Katanas). If you single sleeve or use regular inner sleeves, Katanas are great, lie flat, and have no issues with sliding in cards.
If you want a no-nonsense sleeve that will work great no matter how you want to sleeve, I would definitely choose Dual Mattes. They are less susceptible to grime (but more susceptible to dust), easier to fit in (great for more expensive cards), look better as a whole, but don't have that tight and secure feel (if that is something you like). Both are great sleeves. I've chosen to use Dual Mattes for more expensive decks (for a better double sleeving experience), and Katanas for more budget decks. Since you can't really go wrong...... just pick your favourite colour or whichever your LCS stocks. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Please do a review on the new gamegenic deck boxes (card lair and game lair), it looks nice, but I really only trust professor's reviews that helps me make the decision
The eucalyptus color of the new ones is gorgeous I had to have it over the lightning and lagoon
I've pulled the trigger on this as soon as it be came available to the US market. Aside from the obvious Dragon Shield logo (the 'D') at the bottom I was quite impressed. I think if we give this enough time I'm certain that Dragon Shield will be able to address the issues people have about this. But for now this is definitely worth the $24.99 + S&H you cannot go wrong with this.
I always appreciate the genuine feel here. Bravo 👏
I saw an ad for these on social media and my immediate thought was "I can wait to hear a review from The Professor."
Always enjoy your reviews! Has saved me money over the years!
I was really looking forward to seeing your verdict on these. As soon as I heard about them I was so excited to get a set of sleeves with morph/manifest "tokens" printed on the back for my Kadena Slinking Sorceress Commander deck but was worried that they might not be high enough quality. So glad to hear they are the usual dragon shield quality. Thanks Prof
Oh my God this is literally the best idea ever
I ordered some for my Queen Marchesa deck. Its of a beautiful painting of Rivendell. I like them a lot
I love the new standing presentation desk. Well done, Sir!
I'm so excited for the Orchid sleeves☺
Thank you for another great product review, Professor.
This is really cool. Hopefully in the future they improve on what the prof said. The white borders doesnt bother me as much as the tiny D. Strange why they need something that feels like should easily be removed since its not branding either.
another comment theorized it was to prevent people from bulk ordering and selling their own custom sleeves on etsy or ebay, which sounds likely
@@MrInvisibleJ That seems like a really bad business plan. These things are 2.5x the cost of normal sleeves before shipping and tax. In order to make a profit off them, you'd have to charge a minimum of $30 per 100. Who's gonna spend that much on sleeves when you can either get plain ones for a third the cost, or your own custom design for slightly less than what the etsy person is charging?
As someone who has these sleeves, it doesn't bother me at all. In fact, I don't even really notice it anymore. However, I could see how it would be maddeningly distracting to some people. If you get the chance to see some in person, do it. The D might not be as bad when you see it actual scale with your eyes, instead of zoomed-in-on in a video.
I will say that I tried the Lagoon Dragon Shield sleeves for my first commander deck, Pirate Tribal. When I was shuffling for my third game with it, one of the sleeves ripped. There are multiple factors that might affect that, like me not being great at shuffling cards as well as me accidentally putting two cards in said sleeve, but it ripping prior to the 10th shuffle kinda surprised me.
This is exactly the kind of video that got me to subscribe in the first place all those years ago. I didn't even know this product existed. Now not only do I know I can get custom sleeves printed, but I know all of the downsides. I personally don't find any of the negative things to be a negative, I understand if some people do. I'm definitely going to custom sleeve my modern decks. I think my face winking back at my opponent will be just the distraction I need to get that gamers edge LMFAO
Custom card sleeves are definitely up my alley.
Love your honest reviews Prof, I didn’t know about those new DS sleeves!!
I didn't even know about the dual sleeves. It's why I've been using Eclipses because I like the black back. I'll have to check those out. As always, quality content Prof.
Actually picked up the eucalyptus dual matte a few weeks ago on a whim. Absolutely love them thanks for reviewing them!
YESSSSS!! This has been long time coming
Good video! Glad you reviewed these because I was already assembling my weird meme art collection for just this very purpose!
As a Yu-Gi-Oh player that enjoys magic and looooves your reviews and uses your grades to help guide my Yu-Gi-Oh purchases since most companies make exact copies of their sleeves in Japanese sizes and we'll everything else accessory wise just carries over... I hate that standard size is the only size for custom sleeves..
Coincidentally bumped into the custom sleeves website last night and was wondering how good it was. Too pricey for my personal decks but I was thinking it'd be a cool unexpected b-day gift for a friend. Thanks for the great review as always Prof.
Great review as always! Thanks for all you do for the community!
I've held off buying custom sleeves specifically so I could get your opinion first. Thank you!
