Now I feel extremely lucky that my 4year old girl dog really seems to love having our new 10 week old puppy around. They’re always playing together, with toys and play mouthing. She was always so sad when dogs came to visit but didn’t stay. Thanks for this information

My border terrier puppy jumped on another dog walker once ,his adult dog told her off by squishing her in the dirt she was a lot more respectful to people with dogs after that, she had no injury just her pride. Great video, don’t think I will subject my senior to another puppy let her retire gracefully. Thankyou

My niece surprised me with a Maltipoo puppy for my birthday because my older dog is at the end of her years. She's blind, has arthritis etc..I got the puppy vaccinated, trained to do basic commands, fell in love with him. For 6 months, I really tried to get them to get along but in the end I decided I owed it to my older dog to go in peace when she's ready, not constantly being upset, snapping and barking at the puppy. I gave the Maltipoo back to my niece. She's keeping him but I'm sad that it came down to that choice. Thanks for this video. It helps to know I'm not alone.

I know this video was posted two years ago, but I recently brought home an 11 week old pit bull puppy. My adult dog is a ~6-7 year old pit bull. She is very healthy and dominant. The puppy gets on her nerves, but she corrects his behavior with growls and nips. I monitor the interactions, but I rarely intervine because my adult dog will defend herself and does not put up with his crap. Earlier today she gently pinned the puppy on his side and waited for him to calm down. He rolled over on his back and licked her face. Once he did that she walked away. He pounced on her again and she did the same thing. I think it all depends on the adult dog.

Fantastic advice.. We just brought home a new standard poodle to a home with a little dog a short while ago. Day 1, they were the same size, now the puppy is shy of 5 months and more than double the size. We do exactly as you are describing and it takes work to back up the old little guy but it has paid off well..

Hi! I’m a new sub! I have an 11 yr old Chihuahua and just got an 8 wk Blue Heeler a week ago. So happy you made a video specifically about this, as I am struggling with getting my older dog to welcome the pup into the fold. I will change my technique since I thought my older dog was being too mean and unfriendly with the pup. Also following so that I can best train my Heeler as he’s growing. Thank you!

So glad to see this. Over exuberant puppies too often get a pass, in the home and in the field. The most socially-appropriate dog I ever had was in a feral pack for his first two years. I wonder if puppies would be better off staying with the litter and mother for months and months.

He’s shown aggression to other dogs, both puppies and older dogs, and people. We love him dearly but cannot accept his bad behavior. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you and keep up the fantastic work.

You need some really cool wallpaper installed on that wall first. Then you need to layer some nice pieces of artwork on top. Maybe use that killer Whale piece as a color palate to plan from. You could also ad some display shelving on either side of you and decorate them with some items. You could have the camera zoom out a bit to show what you’ve done on the wall. Good luck my man.

My five year old chihuahua mix is still really playful and energetic so I figured it was a good time to get another puppy. My 5-year old is also the center of my universe and I know when she passes it’s going to destroy me, I felt that having another dog to give my love and attention to would also be healthy for me. 😊

Brought home my 4th puppy a few weeks ago with 5 year old lab at home. I've learned that dealing with situations is dependent upon age, personalitu and temperament of existing dog. If the existing dog is well socialized for the most part I let the adult dog correct the puppy and teach it manners. Btw the adult is 95 pounds and the puppy is 15 pounds and they pay great together. Except they will get a little manic because they don't want to stop and I do separate for breaks. Great advice. Ty.

My puppy was 16 lbs. when she met our Great Pyr, who is 120 lbs. Not a big deal then, but as the puppy has grown our GP, who is almost 9 years old, is getting beat up. We won't let the pup go near the GP unless she's on a leash or line. I wish I had known when we first brought her home. It's harder to break this habit in our puppy, but we need to protect our older girl. Thanks for the advice!

We have a 3yr old German shorthair pointer he weights 80lbs and we got him at 8 weeks. He is a great well behaved dog and gets along great with all sizes of dogs. He has never mouthed or jumps on other dogs. He also has never played with toys with another dog either. He will just drop it and walk away. Doesn’t seem to be a dominate dog.
We now just brought in a 3month old bloodhound puppy. The first day they meet went great!! Did it in the front yard and then went into the back yard. Puppy was timid when our 3yr old play bounded and ran around him. He did pee once from being scared. 3yr old never jumped on him or tan him over or even mouth him.
The next day our new puppy just starts bitting, chasing, sometimes barking, takes toys away from our 3yr, and just won’t leave him alone. Every time our 3yr goes to get water/toys/comes to us for affection. He come over to drink/take away/ bit him. We have let our 3yr try and tell him to go away by pushing him over, pushing him down on the neck with his mouth and bark at him. Puppy has never made a noise as if he is hurt or run away. He just keeps going back for more. He has the curled up face too and he is leave red scratch. It’s been 5 days now of this and he won’t let up.
He is very sweet to us and just does the more puppy play bits with us.
Just don’t know what to do and our 3yr is getting stressed. We do the ear rubbing to reassure him. But we don’t want this to change him and do it to other dogs.
    Any advice would be wonderful.

We waited until our oldest dog passed b4 I got another puppy. We had 2 dogs the surviving dog Duke my Welsh collie was 7½. He refused to be in the same room as Delta my shepherd until she was around 12 weeks unless she was asleep in her crate and from 12 weeks until nearly 20 weeks she had to be asleep at otherside of the room for him to be in the same room. We honestly thought had made a big mistake especially since it was only 3 months from losing our Leonberger to getting Delta but we noticed he'd started having accidents in the house and they stopped as soon as we brought her home and he was playing with us more than he had in yrs, so we let him go out of the way upstairs to the bedroom a place that was his only (well also the cats) and he set the pace on being in room by the time Delta was 6 months we were having to seperate them so that they chilled out and stopped playing like crazy for 5 mins. He did a lot of grumbles and growls at her when she was smaller telling her to back off so she then came to me to play. He still does that when he doesn't want to play (he's 9 now) and it takes 1 and she's OK ill go find somebody else. He hasn't done any of the extreme staying out of the way with our 5 month old Leonberger puppy but he has Delta who's only 20 months to pester and play with and Duke will join in if he wants. I was advised by a trainer that I make Duke be in the room with Delta or get rid of her as only way would be OK with her. So glad I ignored that and let him set the pace instead although it has made me less empathic with people selling their puppies after having a week because the older dog doesn't want to play or cuddle the puppy straight away

Hi! I have a follow up quick question about this. My 4 months old puppy is finally big enough to play with our 35 kg 6 years old female. When they are outisde and playing, they both seem to really enjoy it and both of them are doing play bows, but it is ALWAYS the female that "wins" and it is ALWAYS the puppy that is being chased, never chasing her himself. She is a pretty dominant dog with a clear language and she is absolutely amazing with him, but I was wondering whether this type of play is okay. I hear from every source that dogs should take turns in play.

I have a question for a reactive dog to other dogs on leash only. I have a dog that plays with other dogs frequently. However, if I take him on a walk he will be very reactive to other dogs. His loose leash walking is perfect besides that. When I mean perfect I mean the only time he tries to leave my side is to react to another dog. Hope you can help!

Wall color needs to change maybe a soft blue. Frame around whales too stoic. Pic of dogs or family in background and back camera out to be more inviting. Old office we were in the zone with you. This is sterile. Also our 8 month old nips at us when we correct her. She's a husky and still bitey. Maybe a future video on that. You've inspired us so much. Thank you

I used to have 2 eskies but I had to put the female to sleep in December due to cancer. They had been together for 13 years. Since then my 14 year old male has been quiet and I think depressed except when we go for walks. I have been planning on getting a Sheltie puppy to keep him company and I think he will generally feel better with another dog in the house. My male has always liked other dogs and all people. Any advice? I plan on a controlled introduction and crate training

How can I introduce a puppy to a reactive older and bigger Doberman? I'm just cautious since they are so far apart in size. I've had experienced doing it before with my 5 yr old doberman and 3 month old mexican hairless puppy but it was bad at first because his nip/correction is a VEY BIG BITE for my very small puppy. The puppy was behaved and was just walking past behind my doberman but he didn't want the puppy near him. Good thing he wasn't aggressive to the pup, it was just a warning bite, but I don't want to have to go to the vet the next time I have a puppy over. Should I just separate them until the puppy is a little bit bigger? Or just constantly look out for the puppy so that the two of them won't come too close to each other??

Can I ask a follow-up question? I had a 13 year old corgie mix (was a rescue and very timid) and a 3 yr old cattle dog (purchased as a pup. Everything was going fine until one day I came home to a massacre. The cattle dog mauled the corgie mix to death. In retrospect I should have been kenneling the cattle dog when I wasn't home. At the time I had been debating with myself on whether or not I should have the corgie put to sleep as she was having difficulty with walking.
Could you speak on having a younger dog (not a puppy) and a much older dog and the dynamics of dominance between the 2?
I've searched and can't find any info on the topic.
And my mother in law just got a cattle dog pup and she has a very old jack russle who's going senile. I'd hate to see a repeat incident.
    Thank you.

So sad to hear what you experienced, and your tragic loss. Senior dogs, imo, should always be kept safe. Train a solid Leave-it to the young dog, and always supervise so you can step in to defend & protect the elder. Especially if they have handicaps or senility, it would be a cruel mistake to 'let nature take its course' again. If the newcomer is not respectful of the senile elder, allow the senior the dignity of not needing to compete for your attention... I may choose to keep them apart if it seems the elder has stress because of the new dog.

When your first dog is around 4 years old. Otherwise, you might have the problem, that the one around 1 year old is still not 100% trained, and might stop executing commands because the puppy is not doing it.

I have a 13 year old Mal-Shi and she is generally okay with dogs but doesn’t love them. She is definitely an older girl and I don’t think it’s fair to take away the love and attention she should be getting in her final years or however long we have left with her. I would love to get a puppy but I don’t need one, especially if it means sacrificing the happiness of my current pooch. My girl still has plenty of energy and life left in her but I’d worry that a puppy would be too much for her. People are genuinely surprised by her age, the only thing that gives it away a bit is the sensitivity, she’s never particularly loved strangers or younger kids but she’s become a lot less tolerant of them, she won’t bite but will yelp and growl especially if they are touching her wrong or come up from behind. I think if I were to get a puppy she would be stressed and not at all happy. That’s not something I want for my dog.

QUESTION ON LIVING TOGETHER I have an issue with the behaviour and listening from my 9 month Corso - only since we got our new Boxer puppy Gretel. Dot Corso is now all about the puppy and she has started to blow me off. She was great at listening, well-behaved and loved training before Gretel Boxer arrived. Gretel is very confident and full-on play fighting - I'm stopping the puppy when she goes nuts with the older pup and I limit their time together - what else can I do to get back my well-behaved, attentive Corso pup ?? Free-range dogs, especially Corsos. are not acceptable.

We wanted a puppy while he is still with us to help him regain some youth. Might have been something we should have pondered more before we brought her home, but it is done now. The pup wants so badly to play with him, but he isn't into it, especially because she's now double his size. I have a 10 year old large breed dog
We lost our 9 year old female earlier this year
Yesterday we brought home a 2 1/2 month old pup
I want to let Louie take charge but he’s so big I’m afraid he will hurt the pup
Your advice is logical but I’m worried about the pup
    Louie is number one

Last Thursday Charlie the puppy was able to go out after his last parvo shot
We took he and louie out for a walk , it was great they were good with each other
They had a good day together it was a turning point
Unfortunately Louie passed away on Friday morning
Completely unexpected, he went peacefully at home on his bed next to our bed
      It was very sad 😞
Hang in there it will get better

I have a ten week old Shih Tzu and a ten year old Puggle. The puppy is playful and jumpy and there are times when my older dog allows it, but when she has had enough.....she lets the puppy know. My concern is this; the puppy is fearless and sometimes doesn't listen to the correction. I swoop in and move them apart but how do I know if the correction is too much?

    • @ltpdogtraining6325
      @ltpdogtraining6325 2 роки тому +1

Without actually seeing your dogs it's difficult to give suggestions, but for in general: Let the senior dog give the youngster all the corrections it needs to learn some respect! It'll probably seem awful to YOU (teeth flying everywhere & hearing blood-curdling snarls & puppy yelps) but I wouldn't step in to stop the elder Puggle from doing its job. Youngsters can get really unruly & the best teacher is a stable elder dog.
I had a client bring a genetically extreme hyper, tough 5 mo lab puppy to me. I worked with that puppy for hours trying to teach it, but it seemed quite unimpressed with any human corrections, including the Gentle Leader Headcollar, and only improved 20%... Until I brought in another client's Lab mix. He began to discipline the pup & I stepped in, thinking he was being too rough, but the puppy kept coming back at him with rebellion... So I let the elder Lab do his thing & hound the pup as they ran around the fenced yard. They ended up being great playmates after the pupper finally rolled for him showing deference. Puppy was 80% better with owner after just two sessions. Helper dogs are priceless.
I would say, if the elder dog has a history of instability, has actually shaken & killed small animals, or goes from discipline-mode into anger, actually biting the youngster with intent to injure, only THEN would I step in to interfere. Otherwise, join Beckman's Dog Training Patreon, videotape your dogs & ask Mr.Beckman to take a look. Best of luck!

Im currently struggling with this issue, sort of. My adult male intact dominant dobie is a JERK to my friends new belgain mal puppy. He wont let up on him. I have to keep him muzzled and keep him from staring at the puppy. He wont submit to me and that ive accepted the puppy and he wont even let up in the puppys home/territory. Its been a month and hes not letting it go. My dog is one of those dogs that understands he cannot bite through the muzzle but around the puppy he immediately lunges and tries to bite him with the muzzle on. So when my friend and i want to hang out and we have to have our digs with us, I sit on the bed with my dog and hang on to my dogs collar and we just have to sit there like that while we catch up and then when we see the puppy is getting tired, we encourage the puppy to nap aroubd the corner and out of sight of my dog. Its frustrating. Both my friend and i are gonna have our dogs for a long time and we want them to learn to get along so we can do stuff together. My dog acts like a grumpy old man as soon as the puppy is around. His growls/vocalisations are different with the puppy than in any other situation. His voice gets very deep and very serious and intense.

    • @andrewvincent7299
      @andrewvincent7299 Рік тому

It's better if they are closer in age and grow up together in that younger age. The further in age they are, the harder it could be for them to accept one another. When I was younger we had a Brussel's Griffon puppy who was about 6 months old and then my sister brought home a Shih Tzu puppy who was only three months old and they accepted one another pretty quickly and became best friends. The Shih Tzu finally passed last October at 15 years old but they had lived with one another for that long. The Brussels DOES NOT like other dogs but the Shih Tzu was the only dog he accepted because they grew old together starting from when they were puppies.

I wish I would've found this before getting a puppy with our 11 year old lab. We recently lost our 10 year old GSD to cancer, so I thought a puppy would be a good idea. Every article I read said that it's good for an older dog to be around a puppy, it gets them a little more active and gives them a daily companion.
I think I'm going to get a play pin that separates and block off half of the living room and limit their physical time for now. At what age do they know not to play rough with the older dog?

    • @samanthasullivan1165
      @samanthasullivan1165 7 місяців тому

They don't "know" not to play rough with the older dog at any age. You have to teach them, exactly like Joel said. It could be 4 months that they're okay, or it could be 3 years. If you do nothing, the puppy will just bully, overpower and dominate the older dog once he is bigger and continue indefinitely. It may not be aggressive, but it is still unpleasant and unfair.
A puppy for an older dog is great, if the older dog is used to raising puppies and enjoys it. An 11 year old lab who has never lived with a puppy (you didn't say what breed or sex) can go either way. If it is a GSD then you have an uphill battle ahead of you.
A playpen when they're unsupervised is absolutely mandatory, as is a crate for the puppy. The lab needs plenty of 1 on 1 time with you. The puppy needs to be exhausted before you allow them near the lab.
I'm kind of shocked people would write articles recommending getting a puppy with an older dog. There are older dogs who won't take a puppy's nonsense and will let them know right away what the parameters are, but there are other dogs that will become doormats and look to their humans to stop the abuse. It is a nuanced issue. The notion that they will become best friends is possible but you have to put in the work.
Some adults enjoy puppies but you have to know your dog. I have some that love younger dogs and others who despise them. My friend brought a puppy home to his 13 year old dog but she was a take no shit kind of girl and the puppy didn't have a dominant bone in his body.

The Maltese does not want to play and his after the puppy and the puppy takes it as play because he’s in that paws down tail up position. I redirect but it’s never ending. Female dogs are spayed. Male dogs get neutered. You need to know the difference between dominant humping and sexual humping/other behaviors. If she is old enough to have her first heat cycle just get her spayed. Dont neuter your boy unless there are other major behavior issues like peeing on everything.

So we brought home a new puppy and now one of the older pit bulls is quiet he doesn't want to eat and it seems like he's going to bite the new puppy. When we hold the puppy he jumps up and lunges at him but not really A biting lunge just a lunge but we don't want to take a chance we just don't know if he will bite the new puppy.

I think he means that a younger first dog will be much more receptive to play, not likely to have arthritis and more easily defend itself than an older dog so u won't hv to worry as much about giving the "older" dog backup. Of course it's better if Joel answers this and anything he says of course tops my response. 🐾❤️🙏🏽
