The only resort we have stayed at in the last 20 years! We stayed here the first year it was open and continue to do so twice this year. I’ll note as well that this video has old footage of the lobby, which went through a reno in 2019(ish)

We just got back from Old Key West! Hands down one of the best stays I’ve had on property. Bus system was a bit complicated but it was a peaceful stay, and those who know Disney know it’s not always the most relaxing vacation. Just saying that it was a great escape from the chaos of the parks.

My wife and I stayed in a 1 BR in OKW back in late 2020, and overall loved the experience. Our top floor one bedroom was incredible and HUGE, with a great balcony overlooking a lake on the Golf Course where we could eat breakfast watching people shank into the water. Having our own kitchen and dishwasher was a real boon, since we could run down to the store and get the food we needed, and save a lot of money by just making our own sandwiches and meals.
Once you learn the Peninsular bus stop is the first stop, the buses aren't too bad; we only went through Port Orleans on a few occasions. In all cases we got to the parks in 15-20 minutes.
The atmosphere here is great; a very laid back vibe with the illusion you aren't anywhere near 4 huge theme parks. Overall I really like this resort, and it tends to be one of the most inexpensive options on the DVC menu.

I stayed here in October 2022. The lobby is prettier than shown in this video after the renovation. I like the teals & blues. A 1 bedroom suite was huge for two. The bus stop was near our room & the buses were never too busy. Very quiet & relaxing. Next time I stay here I’ll go to Disney Springs for food &/or get groceries for the room.

While AKL is our favorite, OKW is not far behind. It might be the best resort for non-park days. If you’re staying here, don’t forget to take a pool day and enjoy the relaxing vibes. Also, Olivia’s makes a mean breakfast.

We are DVC charter members of OKW and return to it every couple years throughout our ownership of it. We look forward to each visit and plan everything out well before we arrive for our bi annual vacation there. There are rare occasions where things do not fall into place but we adapt and overcome them. This makes each vacation a memorable one.

We were going to stay at old key west this year. But AKL was like a few dollars more a night so we staid there instead. The indoor hallways and walkability to the quick service made us change to AKL. We used a deal of 25% off room and we rent a car so either resorts travel time does not bother us.

Should you? YES. Give it a try at least once. As the first DVC resort, the rooms are significantly larger (and somewhat better equipped) than comparable DVC resorts. Definitely go for a 1BR or 2BR villa. Otherwise you are missing out on what this resort has to offer. Bad news: the location stinks compared to several other DVC resorts. In particular you can't walk anywhere outside Key West. DEFINITELY have a rental car, unless you really love waiting for buses...

I have to laugh every time I hear the whole “this resort is so big” “so spread out” blah blah blah. Seriously we have been coming to OKW since 1995 and the resort being super spread out and long travel time never seem to be an issue. It is a wonderful relaxing resort that has an internal bus as well as parks and resort buses. The 10 minute boat ride to Disney Springs is both relaxing and an excellent alternative to the buses. But go ahead and talk it down, just makes it easier for me to get a reservation.🤣

I think you may have glossed over two of the biggest advantages at this resort - affordability and convenience.
On the affordability issue - the vast majority of folks who stay here are either DVC members or like me, DVC point renters. If you're renting points from a website like David's Vacation Rental's, not only are the points lower at Old Key West then most any other DVC resort BUT the cost per point is lower ($20.00/point vs. $25.00/point at many DVC resorts). I was able to book a studio here for $200.00 a night. That's almost cheaper then a standard room at one of the All Star resorts. It's also cheaper then a standard view studio at the Boardwalk Villas though the BWV cost fewer points. Also there's never any availability for the standard view rooms at the Boardwalk Villas. (Believe me, I've tried!!)
As for convenience, though we can all tout the accessibility of staying at a monorail or skyliner resort, there's nothing as convenient as having a car right next to your room. No worries about having missed a bus or boat or having to stand on a crowded bus with no remaining seats. Because you're staying at a Disney Resort nowadays, parking is free. If you're wanting to use a car, OKW is THE MOST convenient resort for parking RIGHT NEXT TO YOUR ROOM!!
This makes OKW a real winner! It may not be for everyone but for me, it takes the prize!

Do you have a park you prefer? If not, the Animal Kingdom Lodge is fantastic. You only have buses to get to the parks, but it has two of the best restaurants on property, Sanaa, and Boma (buffet), the savanna with animals, it’s just a stunning place ut does come with deluxe prices. For the cheapest prices, look for Disney’s good neighbor hotels, which are close to Disney, have bus services to the park, and you can probably find for much closer to $100/night. Note that Universal has hotels around that same price point, so they are much cheaper than Disney.

If you have a Costco membership check their car rentals. They don't require any deposit and you can continue to price check, make a new reservation and THEN cancel the first reservation. Sam's and BJ's may also offer good discounts for car rentals. Keep comparing up until just before you leave, the price can drop. Good luck.

Uber! Lyft! Totally worth the price if you are hoping for early entry at the park. Now, I’ve also splurged on a Lyft to get ‘home’ after extended evening hours too…but, all bus service outside of park opening and closing is quite nice and not worth paying for car rental. I would recommend requesting a room near hospitality house or peninsular way. Those are the best spots, in my opinion.

How can you possibly do a review of Old Key West Resort and actually talk about the 1bedroom and not talk about it's bathroom? No other Resort provides at the 1bedroom price point a jacuzzi tub big enough for 2 people. For me it's literally the selling point for why I stay Old Key West in a 1bedroom everytime I go. You get back from a long day at the parks, you grab a cold drink from the fridge and go soak in the jacuzzi tub for a couple of hours. If you stopped at Disney Springs and got some bath bombs, all the better.
