    That was pretty cool. That's essentially how this works. Been an alignment tech for some 35 years. It's always a fight between tire wear and handling. People don't understand that a performance car will go through tires faster. Such as a BMW.

    This is really interesting. As a mechanic/engineer myself, I was alway intrigued about perfect wheel alignment. But we used to do only front wheel alignment in the 60-70s. Independent suspension and all wheel drive vehicles came later, with the early Jaguar being the best known vehicles with independent suspension.

      Never build roads with shitty materials or otherwise it will get deformed and potholes will form just have the roads supported with 400mx200m concrete poles then a slab going everywhere with the length of where ever it goes width wide enough for any large aircraft can land on and height to support any heavy aircraft at least 900 metres or more to support heavy air craft.

      @@Zzrdemon6633 you sir are very clueless. toe alignment is necessary every time you disconnect the rod from the wheelhub, and you kinda need to do that in order to change the bearing. I change rods and align angles every day and trust me, counting turns doesn't fix toe angle, it just makes the car able to go from the place you changed the rod to the place where you align the angles. And one more thing, if you go align your angles in a place where they ask you for 100 dollars than you are a fool. We do it for around 40-45 or 70-75 if the rear wheels need alignment too.

    I recommend that everyone goes and gets a wheel alignment right now because if you don't the following will happen
    1) your tires on the inside will go bald faster than the outside due to the caster thing
    2) your tires will also start having the cracking affect
    3) pressure will build up depending on weather and eventually you'll get a blowout , rollover and die
    4) depending what car you drive will depend how much each tires will cost you.
    The way you could notice is try to drive straight and if your car goes to the left or goes to the right most likely you have a unalignment Or it could just be the way your road is paved
    Happened to my vette and tires weren't cheap
    In conclusion get your wheel alignment it should be $100 at the dealership or less and it'll cost less than buying new tires at least for the front 2

    What you need to know is this is yet another way that dealerships rip you off. If your alignment is fine why do they charge you when the computer tells them do nothing it's fine?
    Well they still do. They must charge for turning the machine on, I guess it uses megawatts of electricity or even more maybe for the price they charge.
    Also everytime you get tires or service you don't need an alignment necessarily but they will charge you again and again. To do nothing at all but turn on the machine and read it's fine.

    1:32 "You can see how the tyre is becoming deformed. Due to this deformation, the contact area of the wheel with the road decreases significantly.This will lead to poor frictional force"
    Ok, but isn't the (force of friction) = (friction coefficient) * (normal force), independent of the contact area?

    • @mfitz1718
      @mfitz1718 3 роки тому +2

      Yes, but think about it like this. As the contact area increases, the total frictional force isn't changed, but the distribution of that force is spread out more. If we were to decrease the contact area, that would concentrate the same force into a smaller area. Now, since tires have a max amount of Force per Area(N/m^2) they can exert before slipping, this means less contact area results in more force per area, and if it's enough, it can cause the tire to slip and lose traction. On the flip side, if u have a very low force per area value (meaning more contact area), the car goes slower as there is more drag on the tires.

    • @beyondfossil
      @beyondfossil 6 років тому +1

      Yes, these alignment optimizations improve vehicle handling performance at the cost of some uneven tire wear. But tire rotation maintenance helps a lot. Many SUVs have a degree or two of negative camber on the rear tires which increases wear on the inside tread of those tires but improves handling and safety with these tall vehicles. Conversely, front tires often wear on the outside of the tread due to normal front wheel steering action. But if the tires are rotated regularly, the inside and outside tire wear will be spread out over the lifetime of the tire.

    This tells me nothing about how an alignment is done physically.

      The video is about understanding wheel alignment. 😂
      Should be basically an overview.

      Repairs 142 is right. It doesn't tell anything about adjusting. If we wanted to learn about car theory we'd jus go look in our Chilton manual. It doesn't show how to adjust alignment in most manuals. Jus says take it to an autoshop. See...the rest of the human race who owns vehicles doesn't like spending hundreds of dollars on something so stupid as tire alignment. It's 2024 not 1984 so Unless ur paying for it, keep ur wallet rich opinion to yourself.

      If you want to set your wheel alignments manually at home, you must have a pair of eye that can decide plus or minus of wheel inclination in milidegree and have a knowledge of how suspension parts work.

      Then go comment, “yea but this doesn’t make me understand alignments” on that video

      Rolling friction relies on contact area, that's a different type of friction.

    • @basim8783
      @basim8783 6 років тому +4

      Friction is actually dependent on the "actual area of contact", just not the apparent area visible to us. But you don't see it in the equation since the actual area of contact is represented by the normal reaction. The harder you press two surfaces together, the more of their "elements" come in contact.

      Why did you feel the need to specify your gender as female? All individuals, regardless of their gender, are capable of driving cars. There was no specific need for you to mention your gender.

    One thing I found years ago when owning a premium car was that cheap tyres don’t work on a heavy car. I ripped though a set after only 8,000 miles cos I only paid £70 per tyres. So I reverted back to the original that came with car. Pirelli. Next I had an issue with wheel alignment. I had no idea the rear wheel could be out of alignment. I thought only front wheels go out. Anyway the usual shops did a wheel alignment for me only to find it didn’t fix the problem. I was puzzled. Turns out you have to go back to the main dealer. In my case Volvo and pay then £100 (non refundable) to check and if necessary adjust. And good job I did. My advise would be forget premium cars and buy normal cheap cars like Ford or Citroen etc. I now have no issues with cheap tyres and don’t have expensive servicing costs that sports cars have.
