So apparently there is such a thing as a “hair type” 😳 I had no idea and I don’t know what mine is... but my best guess is that I have a dry scalp and an average thickness of hair? My stylist told me I have thin hair but A LOT of it... I hope that helps, I am no expert 😂 This is the Plaine Shampoo I use if you want more reviews! bit.ly/34jiL7s
I believe she has included that brand before in a Greenwashing video, since the parent company is Unilever, which is responsable for a lot of our current plastic pollution as well as exploiting people and resources in other countries.
Hi Shelby! Happy Monday! Thanks for reviewing our shampoo and conditioner bar in your zero waste shampoo video, it means a lot. It was really informative and I’m sure viewers have learnt a lot :) Our sincere apologies for the confusion, all our shampoo bars are free of sodium lauryl sulfate, we use sodium coco sulfate, not saponified coconut oil which is essentially soap, our bars are soap-free and are pH balanced. Bars which are soap-free don’t leave a waxy soap residue through the hair, which means for an easy washout and no need for an ACV rinse, woohoo! If you wanted to dig into our ingredients more, we have the list of ingredients on all our products and if you click on an ingredient, a nifty wee pop up will appear which will give you a rundown of the ingredient :) And fret not, Shelby! We ship our products from our lab/warehouse to our customers and to our distributors plastic-free. Also, we are certified climate-friendly and working towards carbon positive (where they offset 120% of our emissions), so our clever little bars are carbon neutral. Hope this all helps! Hope you enjoy Heali Kiwi and Wonderbar Have a wonderful week, Jen
Honestly, I might buy your shampoo bar simply because you responded to this video. Aside from being earth friendly, this kind of customer service is why I LOVE shopping ethically and sustainably. ❤
I just bought my first shampoo and conditioner bars ever from Ethique. I have a sensitive scalp (I'm prone to breakouts and sores on my scalp) and frizzy, thick but fine hair (the individual strands aren't coarse but I have a ton of hair), so I use Heali Kiwi and The Guardian. I used them for the first time yesterday and I'm fully obsessed. My hair feels amazing and so light, and it was actually way easier to put them in my hair and rinse them out than I expected. I love that the bars are soap-free, because from what I've read, a lot of bars have soap and end up leaving hair waxy if not properly washed out. This means that with Ethique, I feel like I'm still conserving water. Anyway, I really love these bars. Everyone's hair reacts differently to different natural products because for a lot of us, our hair isn't used to not having harsh chemicals in it, but I really think Ethique is a great place to start!
If your fiance is willing, I'd love to hear if she likes any of these shampoo bars. I'm sure a lot of women with kinky curly hair would like to know if the bars work on that hair type
I have type 3B-3C hair. Shampoo bars aren’t a struggle for me, but conditioner is hard to find, and are essential. I love all of basins bars. My favorite for my hair is the basin white and the island silk. The one thing about ordering online from basin is you have to ask for your order to be plastic free in the shipping instructions. If you buy from the store you can reuse the containers you got there for things like bath salts, bath bombs, and bars
Not kinky, but I have v curly hair and have found that ethique's frizz wrangler shampoo and guardian conditioner are the best shampoo/conditioning bars I've tried! (Still need some type of leave in conditioner/oil after shower, but my hair doesn't feel stripped after, just clean)
I love that you didn't bash Lush as you could so easily have done in this video. I also appreciate you're view and I think that you make a good point. They lead the way in starting the conversation about consciously consuming and as someone who feels like their eco journey started with Lush it now makes a lot more sense. They're a high street retailer who have those initial conversations with consumers who would otherwise be going from H&M to Topshop to Primark and Superdrug during their shopping, they stop off at Lush and pick up something plastic free. It's not perfect but it's a start and right now in our current climate it can feel so overwhelming it's hard to know where to start being green, and Lush gives you an opportunity to change something without going out of your way like unfortunately a lot of other eco brands right now (as in they're online and often you have to research a little to find them and also double check they're not greenwashing).
I totally agree! I think a big problem in the eco-friendly community is an all or nothing mentality that makes it hard for new folks to get into things. I'm looking to branch out from my lush bars now, but I never would have switched to solid products if I couldn't have bought them in stores, and I even got the woman at lush to give me a sample of the conditioner bar before I bought one. Those things lead me to make a switch I probably still wouldn't have made if I had to gamble with scent AND performance with online shopping. (plus I hate online shopping)
Thanks for addressing that SLS isn’t inherently bad and isn’t an issue for many people. I think it’s important to remember that companies will encourage and benefit from the fear of (generally) harmless ingredients because it gives them to opportunity to create and market new products that otherwise may not sell as well.
I have really sensitive scalp, regular shampoo makes it so itchy and dry that eventually it will bleed. I thought the problem was SLS since I can't tolerate it on my toothpaste either. I started to use lushes bars around 3 years ago and they have completely healed my scalp. My mom has the same scalp type and she also uses only lush barshampoos nowdays. I believe it is a tiny portion of people who truly benefit dropping SLS from their haircare.
@@mandi3891 I'm so glad you found a solution to your problem, it sounds so uncomfortable. Some people have certain sensitivities and just need special products to live a normal life, and I'm glad there are companies that are willing to make them. I'm old and when I was young, good luck finding anything like what we have these days! It was impossible. I'm happy to see things changing.
sls makes me itch really bad -to the point you would think that I have lice or really bad dry skin. While I agree there shouldn't be fear mongering I would hope though that people do pay attention to whats going onto their heads
I have always been sensitive to SLS - gives me canker sores when I use any toothpaste with it for some reason, even just once. I really do appreciate the amount of products that have taken sulfates out. My only option at the grocery store used to be toms, which ironically last I checked actually did have SLS in it again once they were bought out by Colgate, while now I have many options!
Former Lush employee here. If you have super dry hair, which you mentioned, that's why all the shampoo bars are feeling the same to you. Someone with more normal to oily hair is going to notice the difference between the bars. I would only recommend the Avocado Co-Wash or Trichomania for drier hair (as a solid option). I have a few favorites in shampoo bars, and there are others that I cannot use at all because it doesn't work for my hair type. Also, a note on the palm oil. Many companies who claim to be palm free, are not actually palm free. They can state they are palm free if they don't have the direct ingredient. However, unless they are making their surfactant in house, they cannot guarantee they have no palm oil. Which is why Lush says they can't guarantee they have no palm oil. They used to say they were palm free, but upon testing, they learned some of the ingredients had traces of palm. They are working on making their own surfactant, but it's a journey, but when I left, they were in the process of finding decent formulas for it. Also, "saponified coconut" is just fancy words for sulfates. Lush's SLS is also coconut based, but they just say it straight because if you have an allergy/reaction to sulfates, you need to know that it's in there.
I love that ethique has sampler sets. It's great to try them out for a while before getting the much larger bar. The samplers themselves last a very long time.
Julie Nance yes! Just got a sampler about a month and a half ago and I’m still working on my first bar (heali kiwi) and maybe not even halfway through the guardian conditioner and I’m already sold on both of them tbh. I swore to myself I wouldn’t blind buy another shampoo bar after the lush ones I got bc they just didn’t work with my hair type at alllllll so I loved that I could get a sample set.
I ordered a sampler once and the delivery service left it on the floor in the post office lobby after business hours (we don't have street delivery, only have PO boxes) and considered that a successful delivery, needless to say it had gone walkabout by the time i was able to get to the post office in the morning. 🙁 I was so disgusted by the whole situation that I just kind of gave up on it, maybe I'll give it another go. 🤞 my fingers I actually receive it.
Right?! It's so weird how long those sample bars can last because sometimes I feel like I use a sample bar in the amount of time that it takes me to use a regular bottle of shampoo!
this channel is making my sustainability journey so easy. i live with hoarders, and my bathroom used to be where they kept all their extras, so im still using that up. but im on the last bottle of shampoo now, and now i dont even have to research a new one lol. im thinking about just making all the switches and donating the rest of the unopened bottles of soap and stuff tho, thats probably better.. dont know why I'm just thinking of that
Yes! Please donate anything you won't use or the people you live with won't use (to a shelter, other friends, relatives, coworkers) rather than just throwing it away.
Or you could just switch your shampoo but have this last bottle as an extra ...and if you don't find right the way something you like, you can keep using it. Or to use in those days you miss regular shampoo.
My partner's ex left full bottles of shampoo before I moved in and I took them to a local women's shelter (; It felt good to get rid of it and not waste
I have a tip I thought I’d share for people who experience scalp irritation, and might feel like they can’t find a zero waste shampoo that is designed for that! Prior to switching low waste, when my scalp would get irritated the ONLY shampoo I found that helped was Head and Shoulders, STRICTLY the Tea Tree oil formula. None of the other ones made a difference. Most likely because Tea Tree Oil is naturally antibacterial, and is known for being soothing for a lot of general skin irritations. Originally I tried so hard to find a shampoo bar with tea tree oil in it. Unfortunately, the only ones that did, didn’t work for me. Left my hair feeling tacky. I have found that lush bars seem to be the only ones that don’t leave that tacky feel on my hair. Good news, choose your favorite shampoo bar formula and then you can customize it for your scalp! I bought 100% Tea Tree oil from Trader Joe’s. I got a small glass essential oil dropper bottle and poured my Tea Tree into it. I leave it in my shower, so when I wash my hair I combine it with my shampoo. I do this by lathering my bar up in my hands first, then add a couple drops of the tea tree into my hand. I then rub my hands together vigorously to combine it with the shampoo and then apply to my scalp and scrub as usual. It leaves my scalp feeling so soothed! And over time it’s proving to work the same way as the head and shoulders tea tree formula, clearing up my irritation. I obviously can’t guarantee this will work for everyone but it’s helped me enough to want to share! Side benefit, if you have kiddos in school! It’s a known tip that Tea Tree scent being on your kids hair can be a deterrent to head lice!
Sheba Moos you’re welcome!!! I hope it works for you like it has for me! It’s been a life saver. I was trying so hard to not cave and go back to my head and shoulders and my scalp just kept getting worse without it. Idk what took me so long to think of doing this but I finally exhausted all my options when this popped in my head 😂😂😂
I do this as well! I have some bulk liquid shampoo and so put some in my hand and then a couple of drops of tea tree. Definitely helps me with irritation!
I love my ethiques shampoo bar! I have scalp irritation issues, and ethique is the only brand I’ve found that has a shampoo bar for problem scalps that actually works (the heali kiwi). I also have hard water and it still lathers and doesn’t leave a residue like some shampoo bars do in hard water.
Try Auromere with neem. I have a scalp condition and the neem helps to calm it. There are many places that carry it on line. I can frequently pick it up at TJMaxx, believe it or not.
This is great to know since I was researching about ethique for my dry scalp issue but skeptical since nothing seen to work and didn't want to spend $15.99 if it's not going to work on my hair. 😩
Hey Shelby, there's a difference between soap shampoo bars and soap free shampoo bars, Ethique is briefly mentioning it in their comment below. Some of the shampoo bars that you're mentioning (Meow Meow Tweet, Bestowed Essentials, JR Ligett's) contain soap which means they're made by using Sodium Hydroxide. This means that the pH level of the final bar is between 9-10 and thus makes the bar alkaline. However, the natural pH value of our skin is acidic which is around 4.5 to 5.5 so that means that all shampoo bars that contain soap in them are quite irritating for the scalp and in my opinion not the best to use. You can see this by checking the ingredients list and usually it mentions "saponified", "sodium hydroxide" or when it has an -ate at the end of an oil ingredient (e.g. "Sodium Olivate"). Hope this helped :)
I use HiBar and love them! I get my hands damp and then lather up the actual bar, but some in my hair and then start rubbing the actual bar on my hair, on top and under. I find it leaves my hair still feeling moisturized and also it doesn't get greasy as quickly as my hair normally would
I switched to ethique recently and have been loving their hair bars. Their conditioning bar called "The Guardian" is amazing! Best conditioner I have ever used. I am a very long haired hair care junkie and I am hooked.
The Guardian conditioner is the only one I found that really works on my hair. I've tried their Wonderbar conditioner and I really had to work at it to get my hair covered. I have long, thick hair though and I know that it makes it a little more difficult.
@@natashagroves2732 I also have long and fairly thick hair and the Guardian has been great! I find I can even use it on my roots without them getting flat or greasy. And the bar is lasting a while even though I use it on all my hair and really lay it on. It's truly amazing
Ethique I just ordered the sample hair pack! I can’t wait to try them all!!! It sounds like I will enjoy The Guardian. We’re going on a cruise the beginning of February, so the sample pack size will be perfect for traveling! I have only tried JR Liggetts shampoo bar so far (which we really like), and I needed to try a conditioner bar. Now I will get to sample the shampoo as well and have something to compare. 💕
I've done a similar test here in Germany and surprisingly enough the drugstores own brand for 2.95 is just as good as Lush shampoo bars. So yeah I've found my goldilocks bar.
I can highly recommend Duschbrocken, so far the best ones I've tried (lather and not-squeaky feeling wise), also Alverde has a great one that you can get at DM and Nature Box recently came out with some, saw them at Rossmann and DM but haven't tried them yet, can't recommend Foamie though, it makes my scalp itch and flattens my hair, also doesn't really lather well (might be something for people with straight hair though) :D Hope this helps some of you fellow Germans ! P.S. I also noticed price tags for Balea shampoo bars, but so far they've always been sold out .
I have been loving Plaine Products! The ingredients are clean, my hair is clean, I feel like my whole life is clean. Not to mention, just my first order of shampoo and conditioner has lasted me three months so far!
I use HiBar and I love it! It took a minute to get use to. Once you break in the bar (like 2-3 washes) it works very easily and effortlessly for me and my hair type! I have very fine/thin hair, thin enough that I never use a normal thickness hair tie. But I also condition my hair everyday or every time I shower. I used to have to wash my hair daily because it would be so greasy and I was very self conscious, but HiBar makes it so I can wash it every other day! It’s all about preference and hair type! Thanks for making this video!!!
Tiffany Thalacker scrolled 3 min to find a hibar review. I got a conditioner bar last week so I wanted a second opinion. I felt like they were on the pricier, side price per oz, but also nice it was in a local store. I don’t know enough to give a review other than that. I also wonder if you could melt or squish it down into a hockey puck shape if one had Shelby’s issue
Love seeing these review type vids! Sometimes, even if I do lots of research, I still just wanna know what other peoples' opinions are. Have you considered consolidating this info into a graphic? It would super helpful so in the future, if someone wanted to reference it again, it's easy-peasy!
I tried ALL my local soapmaker shampoo bars with no luck. I finally broke down and ordered some from Royalty Soaps, they sell out super fast, and I managed to snag 3 of 4 they offer. I've only tried the sea green one so far and love it, but I only wash my hair once a week so I have shampoo for at least a year. Shampoo bars are like menstrual cups, you need to try a few before you find the perfect one.
I love ethique. The one recommended to me at Lush made my scalp itch or feel off after washing. None are also considered safe for color treated hair but all of ethiques are. And their packaging including the sticker is compostable. And Ethique bars are free from SLS
I love the ethique volumizing shampoo bar, has some salt in it so I wouldn't have to use like a salt spray after washing, smells great, lasts a long time. (thin, straight, dry hair)
My favorite brand is Chagrin Valley Soap & Salve. The Cafe Moreno is soooooo good. Plus they're relatively affordable. For instance their sample size bars, which are the standard size from Lush, are only $3! They have an informational blog too which are helpful especially if you're new to this type of product.
@@Shelbizleee They added some new bars just this fall that use sodium coco sulfate, but the preexisting ones still have SLS. The SCS ones are: Angel Hair, Flyaway Hair, and Coconut Rice Cake
As a curly girl, I don't shampoo at all. Only conditioner and only once a week. I occasionally use a co-wash, and I really liked the avocado one from lush. I wish there were more options for zero waste styling products, like leave-in conditioner, styling cream and gel. There's some in recyclable containers at lush, but they're pricey. Love your videos!
Ethique's Damage Control or Frizz Wrangler work great on my hair. I have long, thick, wavy hair and these ones make my hair feel great. I also like Ethique's Guardian conditioner. I have tried other shampoo and conditioner bars but the ones I mentioned are my faves.
I have dry, wavy, color treated hair with an extremely dry scalp, and my favorite shampoo bars are from maple hills naturals. They are all the same formula, but come in a bunch of different natural scents, and really moisturize my hair, while still cleansing, and are much mire gentle on my hair then most other shampoos. I use it before i bleach my hair every 3 months, and then once more each month, along with anytime i use styling products in my hair( usually about 6 times a year) , and my hair feels and looks amazing.
I agree with your Meow Meow Tweet review (smells soooo good though). My favorite shampoo bars are from Unwrapped Life (Canadian company but I'm from Canada).
I feel like I’m one of the few people that prefers sulfates (not sls, but other types) in my shampoos. Ethique and some brands that use sodium-coco sulfate work really well for me
I absolutely love the HIbar shampoo bar. I find it lathers extremely well and haven't had the same experience. I love the shape and find it every easy to use. I am not a big fan of the conditioner bar though. I use Plaine conditioner.
Thank you so much for taking the time to research all these products! I find myself coming to your channel A LOT before making a new purchase as I’m trying to slowly finish my old products and transition into a more green home. 💚
Strolling Through Life I’ve been considering trying them after I run out of liquid shampoo that I already bought a while ago, but I am waiting until hibar comes out with a fragrance free line which they claim is coming in the next couple months. I have a sensitive scalp and they use citrus oils in all of their current products which can be very sensitizing
I really liked the Bar None, but I could only get it from Urban Outfitters and it came wrapped in like 80 layers of plastic and cardboard so I stopped buying it. Thank you for showing some other options out there!
I recently repurchased from lush, but can not wait to be able to try Plaine Products! You did mention off setting your carbon footprint; how does one do that?
Happy you covered Plaine’s shampoo! Shampoo and conditioning bars have never worked for me. They never make my hair feel clean or moisturized and typically make my waves fall really flat. Been waiting to finish up my current shampoo to switch to Plaine ❤️ Personal care is the one area I struggle to replace plastic with. Would you ever consider reviewing the Clinique facial wash bar? I’ve been considering switching and have heard amazing things! 💕
I use Lush products for my face (Dark Angels), and shampoo bars (I have one for oily hair). I find that the products I use work great and last a really long time. The only downside is that because I take so long to use my products, by the time I go to re-purchase them, they stopped making them and I have to pick new ones.
I make my own shampoo bars, just pure castille soap balls. I use light olive oil, lavender essential oil, water and lye, with unsaponified oil remaining in the soap at 10%. I also make a co-wash with Shea butter, jojoba oil, castor oil, lavender oil, lye, and a butterfly pea flower tea infusion. I love my swaps to homemade hair care 💙
Shelby, Ethique is also available on Amazon! It was the “Amazon’s Choice” when I searched for curly hair shampoo bar! ☺️ I just ran out of my regular conditioner and got a conditioner bar from them, but I think I got the Wonderbar for normal to oily hair? We’ll see how it turns out, excited their brand was a top choice though!
Thank you for sharing this guide! I am currently using Lush's honey shampoo bar and I really like it. I find that my hair is super soft and has improved - I also love the smell of it!
I use the Lush 'jumping juniper' shampoo bar and have been doing for well over a year now and I LOVE IT, it's a bit pricier, but it lasts so much longer than a bottle would and i love how soft and clean it makes my hair feel!
Thank you so much for your honest review!!! I needed this so much hahaha! Right now I am refilling my shampoo at my local bulk store (I AM SO SO LUCKY!), but this is great for people who might not have that available for them.
Shelbi: "I also think that it's cool that these are super accessible. You can go to a Lush anywhere in the country and get one of these." Me: *cries in small town American* Thank god for online shopping amirite?
I wash my hair with Dr. Bronner's Castile soap and use an ACV rinse as conditioner. My hair is fine and curly and has never looked better, I highly recommend it.
Here for this content! I use humankind right now but my hair requires an oil (for conditioner) at the tips after. I have waist length wavy thick hair so snarling is always a problem.
I have been using JR Ligett's for a few months and I really like it. I don't have to wash my hair every day, but I do need to condition. I have dry scalp and curly hair so I use the tea tree formula. My husband likes the jojoba and peppermint bar. The bars last forever so they are worth the price in my opinion.
Yes!! I've been wanting to get zero waste shampoo but was worried that it wasn't going to work out for me and that I'd end up wasting it. Thank you so much for the video!
OK, I use Viori shampoo and conditioner bars. I have had amazing luck with them. It took my dry damaged hair and made it soft and shiny. Just for reference I have course hair that is actually fine in texture. I recently went through a phase of wanting my dark brown hair to be blonde. Never a good idea. I loved the blonde, but my hair didn't. I ended up having to go back to dark brown, because my hair began to fall out! It wasn't my stylists fault. Hair can only handle so much before it just can't anymore. I switched to viori recently when, quite frankly, I'd run out of options...my usual salon brand just wasn't working. I saw Viori and bought it out of desperation. I'm glad I did. The hair fall is GREATLY reduced, and my hair is soft and shiny again. Give it a go.
I have psoriasis on my scalp, and the hemp and tea tree bar from JR Liggets keeps it under control the most. I wash once a week and follow with an apple cider vinegar rinse because it is pretty drying, but I love the way it makes my hair feel. I do have to order it online because lots of these things aren’t available in WV so I’m excited to see if we have the ethique bar at target to try and cut down on shipping emissions
I started using the hibar volumize and for my thin straight hair its GOLDEN. It has a citrus smell, and for me lathers more than my drugstore shampoo. The conditioner is perfect just make sure to leave it in for a little bit. It by far is my favorite and cleared my dry scalp right up!
No Tox Life has a dishwashing bar that is palm oil free, cruelty free, and vegan. It's also dye and fragrance free. It's what I use and i love it. You only use as much as you need and it lasts for months!
You can buy a 100% coconut oil dish soap from a local soap maker! I make soaps 🧼 and I make 100% coconut oil soap that can be used as dish soap or as laundry soap!
I'm so glad you talked about how sulfates are only bad for someone if they have a sensitive scalp. There was a lot of false info out there (still is) that all sulfates are bad and they're bad for everyone, but this isn't true. If people want more information, look at actual medical research articles, *not* anyone else. Sulfates are more cleansing so I wouldn't recommend a shampoo with sulphates if you have a sensitive scalp, if you have a dry scalp, or have 3C or more coily hair because those hair types tend to be hella dry and sulfates are pretty cleansing. They are great for those of us with oily hair (I tried no-poo for 2 months and I've tried other "scalp resets" and some of us just have really oily hair, no matter how little we wash it). Also important to note that ingredients play a big part in how it will perform on the hair. Lavender, sea salt, juniper berry, citrus, papaya, pineapple, mango and kiwi are SUPER cleaning. Butters (cocoa, shea), honey, and glycerin are going to moisturize either bc they're an oil, or a humectant. The last two in that list are humectants, so it'll draw moisture to the hair and won't feel as oily. However, if you live in a cold climate where winters are very dry, or a very desert-like place this could end up making your hair drier (since there is no moisture in the air, it will draw dryness into your hair, if that makes sense) so you would need to use a conditioner (so it draws the moisture from the conditioner into your hair). The closer any of the mentioned ingredients is to the top of the list, the more likely it is to have the effect mentioned. So just because you like the smell of something, doesn't mean it's the best thing for your hair type. I used to be a LUSH product trainer so I like to share all of this, regardless of the brand you buy from, because the information still remains factual and important to know.
I wish this was tested with hard water. I have really hard water and live in an apartment so I can't get a softener, not even the shower head ones. On a different note, is it better to get something in glass or compostable packaging? There are 2 natural deoderants I like, one in glass and the other a compostable tube. I want to know which one is better to get. I also have to order them both online.
I don't know re glass versus compostable it would probably depend on whether you have access to an industrial composting (like a curbside) scheme. But I'd pick the one I'd worry less about travelling with as I do that a lot. I have hard water where I am. I find the lush ones quite harsh but they lather well. The lush conditioner bars don't lather at all. I haven't tried any of the others on this list as I'm in the UK and the only ones I'd heard of outside the lush ones were miaow miaow tweet but can only get them online. Cole and Co and Faith in Nature in bulk refills and have done really well with them. I use a conditioner bar from a local maker when travelling. She does use a conditioning agent in it which the lush ones don't have but it works amazingly. If anyone is in the South Wales area you may have seen her at craft fairs the brank is Folk Soap. It's not a vegan brand but a lot of her products are vegan and palm oil free and all are cruelty free.
@@blisles7626 Thanks. At least with the deoderant I was thinking of, the packaging is cardboard so it should probably break down in my home composting.
I use Dr. Bronner's castille soap bar on my body and my hair, then use a rinse I make with diluted vinegar and essential oil. They also sell a rinse but it's so easy to make I do it myself to save some money. No bad chemicals and it lathers really well!
I currently use the purple Lush shampoo bar (which is the first shampoo bar I've tried) and I like it though I only wash my hair once a week and find it cuts through any oil build up on my scalp nicely and leaves my hair feeling clean. I have however been looking at trying Ethique shampoo bars and am glad they were so high up on your list.

I bought the sample kit from Ethique and I love the frizz wrangler shampoo and the wonderbar conditioner. I have fine wavy hair and I will definitely be repurchasing! I was very excited when you said they’re being sold at Target now.... yes!
I have very fine and oily hair (but a lot of it) and the Lush Jumping Juniper bar works really well for me! I don’t use conditioner either, I don’t need it. I could see how someone with less oily hair would find the Lush bars stripping though, they do give that squeaky clean feeling, and some can be harder to rinse out if you don’t take your time (although an ACV rinse helps rinsing out any shampoo bar!). I’m interested to try Ethique’s oily hair bar after watching this.
I have oily roots and use a solid lush shampoo bar called Jumping Juniper (the purple bar) and it has worked really great for me. (If you have oily hair and would like to try this shampoo and don't have any sensitivities, then I recommend trying it. After using the shampoo bar my hair overall feels really nice and clean. Also, my oily roots are cleaned and gone. I also noticed that the ends of my hair did not feel dry as they did when I was using a regular shampoo in a plastic bottle with lots of chemicals I didn't know about. Another thing I noticed was that my natural hair color was more noticeable.
I’ll be honest, I adore my lush shampoo bar. (I use Honey I Washed My Hair) I have the most sensitive, dry scalp that bleeds often (sorry TMI), and this soothes it amazingly. I have tried other shampoo bars that leave product in my hair so my hair feels almost sticky, but Lush shampoo bars leave my hair feeling soft and silky. It lasts forever and I wash my hair twice a week. It smells gorgeous but not overpowering. Overall, I have tried other shampoo bars, but Lush is my absolute fave! X
I was thinking about getting "plain" for my little sister. I use a bar personally but she likes a bottle. She's always concerned about her shampoo since she dyes her hair. I've used ethique, they have a sampler pack I bought. I like them, but my favorite is a bar from a veeeery local shop.
I use the Trichomania shampoo bar and the jungle conditioner bar by lush. I typically wash my hair 2x a week. My impression of the shampoo bar is it lathers really well, fairly easy to apply and rinse out. However, if you keep this shampoo bar in a tin you need to cut off the red wax otherwise it can grow mold if the tin does not dry out completely before closing it. The jungle conditioner has a very strong smell when you get it, it made my whole bathroom smell like the bar. It's not a bad smell, just very strong. It conditions really well, but you need to make sure you rinse it all out otherwise your hair will look greasy. It sometimes takes me 2 rinses to get the conditioner out of my hair. I think I'm going to try the ethique bar next to see it works better than the lush bars I've tried.
Hey Shelbi, I'm just curious about your thoughts on using the environmental working group guides u have talked about. I have been finding products on there that I hope are a better option (dishwasher tabs, etc) Anyways, according to them, the ethique shampoo bar is ranked at a 3. Is that "good enough" for you? I really want to find the best shampoo bar for myself and for the planet.
I dye my hair bright colors alot and have eczema on my scalp so many shampoo bars haven't worked for me. I started using seed phytonutrients though, I bought it off earth hero and I love it!! It helps my hair not feel brittle, it lathers well and it comes with seeds i can plant later!!!
Thank you so much for this vid! I've been super curious about these bars but with curly bleached hair I get scared to try new brands as my hair freaks out!
I love Bar None conditioner - I have thick, curly hair. I wasn’t a fan of the price - got it from the bar none website and shipping was almost as much as the product itself. Hopefully it will last me long enough so the next time I buy it will be easier to access! (Or I find an alternative)
How long did you test each of these for? A single time? Multiple? I find some shampoos work really well for me the first couple times but over time make my hair greasier between washes and make me have to was more. Thanks!
@@laurablankenship3567 I''ve been using Curlsmith's cowash. isn't bottle free but it has pretty clean ingredients its nice and moisturizing without being heavy . I have hard water too and shower hot . if that makes a difference. befor that i used Dessert essence - but its bottled too. I just tried angel hair by Lush so far .. so good ! soft no dried out hair with no conditioner an no itchy scalp ! 0.0
I'm loving faith in nature shampoo and conditioner at the moment. It comes in a plastic bottles but are refillable at a lot of bulk shops (in London at least). Leaves my fly away curly ish hair nourished and frizz free
As someone that have thick, wavy-ish hair that's prone to frizz and drying out, I always struggled with commercial shampoos. Always leave my hair wire-y or dry. When I want to go zero-free and eco-friendly, I tried a few shampoo and conditioner bars. So far, Ethique is the winner for me! I'm happy my hair health is improving after switching to a better alternative! Just need to fine eco-friendly and effective hair care (leave in conditioner as an example)
I just tried Viori and its awesome. I have super sensitive skin with a detergent allergy. Almost all shampoos liquid or bars make my hair fall out. This doesn't and my hair is so so soft.
Ethique also has a sample pack. It really helped me figure out which one I liked best and worked for my hair type. My first and favorite brand I've been using!
I love the ethique wonderbar! I have dry scalp and it doesnt irritate it, but it hasnt eliminated it. I also use the conditioner bar and love them both. I use the shave bar and just got their kids shampoo and detangler conditioner for my girls and my 11 year old says it's easy for her to use. I wash my 4 and 8 year olds hair. So glad to see that Ethique is on your favorites!
You forgot Viori! Viori is a great brand. When you receive the shampoo+conditioner through mailing there’s not plastic! There wrapped in wood/paper material. Which I’ve never seen before. The shampoo is not stripping and the conditioner is great. They also make different bars for dry/oily/normal hair types. I’ve had mine and it lasted for 3-5 months😳 I double shampoo so the bar was low but the conditioner was only half way gone(I have long hair and use a lot). I love Viori and what they do. Recently I had a problem with my order and guess what they did? They sent me a new one for free….I was shocked that a company would do that. Not only do they have great customer service but I’m in love with their products! I recommend Viori for everyone :)
Sarah Biernat I actually use a knife to cut my bars in half or in quarters, because I don’t like to leave the entire bar inside my shower constantly because I find they dissolve faster from humidity and being splashed. So if I don’t like one I’ll take my other pieces I haven’t used yet and give them to my friends and family. This way they can get to try a different kind as well, to see if it works for their hair type and if they do end up loving it, I managed to convince someone to switch to plastic free!
I find shampoo bars hard to use once they get really small because they also tend to get mushy, so at that point they make amazing shave soap or I clean my makeup brushes with the little nubs!
Hi Shelbee, this is really useful. Did any of the bars aggravate your dry scalp? My problem is a dry and itchy scalp so always looking for something soothing.
So apparently there is such a thing as a “hair type” 😳 I had no idea and I don’t know what mine is... but my best guess is that I have a dry scalp and an average thickness of hair? My stylist told me I have thin hair but A LOT of it... I hope that helps, I am no expert 😂

It was really informative and I’m sure viewers have learnt a lot :)
Our sincere apologies for the confusion, all our shampoo bars are free of sodium lauryl sulfate, we use sodium coco sulfate, not saponified coconut oil which is essentially soap, our bars are soap-free and are pH balanced. Bars which are soap-free don’t leave a waxy soap residue through the hair, which means for an easy washout and no need for an ACV rinse, woohoo!
If you wanted to dig into our ingredients more, we have the list of ingredients on all our products and if you click on an ingredient, a nifty wee pop up will appear which will give you a rundown of the ingredient :)
And fret not, Shelby! We ship our products from our lab/warehouse to our customers and to our distributors plastic-free. Also, we are certified climate-friendly and working towards carbon positive (where they offset 120% of our emissions), so our clever little bars are carbon neutral.
Hope this all helps!
Hope you enjoy Heali Kiwi and Wonderbar
Have a wonderful week,
Jen
Honestly, I might buy your shampoo bar simply because you responded to this video. Aside from being earth friendly, this kind of customer service is why I LOVE shopping ethically and sustainably. ❤
I love Ethique
@@allisonkerkhoff4833 Omg I have the same issue!! Thanks for sharing!
Allison Kerkhoff no way I just ordered the Heali Kiwi Bar and the Guardian Bar too! I have a dry scalp and thickish/fizzy hair! I hope it goes well!
If your fiance is willing, I'd love to hear if she likes any of these shampoo bars. I'm sure a lot of women with kinky curly hair would like to know if the bars work on that hair type
erjanica25 yes!
If you buy from the store you can reuse the containers you got there for things like bath salts, bath bombs, and bars
that is a great idea!
I would love for her to do a black african soap version of this and maybe even use naptural85 version of African black soap.
You should have said “without further ado let’s shampoo”
I thought the same!
😂
When comparing 2 bars, she did say "Head to Head!" :)
Why did I say that outloud to myself 🤦🏻♀️
You’re so right
I love that you didn't bash Lush as you could so easily have done in this video.
Totally agree! I just can’t stand with the pressure to become 100% ecologically perfect
Ash H the biggest concern with sls is that it is palm oil derived...
Hi Maureen are you a former lush formulator? I wanted to get in touch with you…
I love that ethique has sampler sets.
@@Keebzoo That is great because the average person would be ready to trash anything an ex had, not caring whether if not it could be used elsewhere.
@@kaylawaters2691 oh for sure, I would never throw away a perfectly good product. I live in a low income area so it just feels immoral to me tbh
Ashley Lawrence thanks for this!! I don’t know why I never thought of this. I have so much tea tree
Ashley Lawrence fingers crossed!
I do this as well! I have some bulk liquid shampoo and so put some in my hand and then a couple of drops of tea tree. Definitely helps me with irritation!
Always be careful though because tea tree oil isn’t safe for pets!

At winco theres a soap bar with no packaging just a tiny sticker so you can pay for it. I love it I get the alovera + oats
SwiftStar Games I had no idea I will have to look for it next time I’m there!
Those soap bars are for your body.. not your hair lol
I love ethique. The one recommended to me at Lush made my scalp itch or feel off after washing. None are also considered safe for color treated hair but all of ethiques are. And their packaging including the sticker is compostable. And Ethique bars are free from SLS
Ethique is entirely plant based and is SLS free, they mention they use plant based options to replace them like the coconut “sulfate”.
I love the ethique volumizing shampoo bar, has some salt in it so I wouldn't have to use like a salt spray after washing, smells great, lasts a long time. (thin, straight, dry hair)
Do you use a conditioner as well? Do you wash your hair everyday? I'm looking for a volumizing shampoo bar and also have fine, dry hair.

禄Abby Oh nice! I didn’t know they were coming out with a fragrance free line. That’s great!
I absolutely LOVE ethique. I use the kiwi one and dont need conditioner unless I dont brush my hair for awhile. Highly recommend.
YESS!! I’ve been waiting for this video! I remember you mentioning that you’ve been working on it. ITS FINALY HERE! Thank you so much ❤️🥰🧼💦
I really liked the Bar None, but I could only get it from Urban Outfitters and it came wrapped in like 80 layers of plastic and cardboard so I stopped buying it. Thank you for showing some other options out there!
I recently repurchased from lush, but can not wait to be able to try Plaine Products!
You did mention off setting your carbon footprint; how does one do that?
I use Go Climate Neutral
Happy you covered Plaine’s shampoo! Shampoo and conditioning bars have never worked for me. They never make my hair feel clean or moisturized and typically make my waves fall really flat. Been waiting to finish up my current shampoo to switch to Plaine ❤️
Personal care is the one area I struggle to replace plastic with.
Bar None is by far the best I've ever tried and is the best for curly hair
I love how you show people ways that they can make their own routine more sustainable! so helpful!
Shelbi: "I also think that it's cool that these are super accessible. You can go to a Lush anywhere in the country and get one of these."
Me: *cries in small town American*
Thank god for online shopping amirite?
Haha I thought they were in pretty much every mall.
You are right! 😊
I use the Plain Products conditioner and I love it. It looks like it would feel too watery, but it leaves my thick wavy hair feeling nicely hydrated.
Honestly never knew there was such a thing as a shampoo bar! My liquid shampoo is almost gone so now I wanna try one of these 😁
I have been using JR Ligett's for a few months and I really like it.
If you have a lush store near you, you can walk in and ask for a shampoo bar sample.
@@lilascharmante2712 thanks! I didn't think about that!
I need a video like this on dish soap lol 😂 or can someone recommend one that is palm oil free, cruelty free and vegan ! Thanks !
I used to be a LUSH product trainer so I like to share all of this, regardless of the brand you buy from, because the information still remains factual and important to know.
julied945 I think it might depend on whether those butters and oils are saponified. Thanks for all that info ☺️
I considered trying Dr. Bronner’s, but want to avoid palm oil, which they use.😕
Shelby is not going to buy another shampoo bar in a long time. 😂
Hi Shelbi! We are so late to the UA-cam commenting game, but we have always LOVED your videos! So thankful for your amazing review and for emphasizing that not everyone NEEDS a shampoo and conditioner. We're all about minimizing our routines where we can which is why we love your eco-minimalism mission 🌎
And thank you so much for offsetting your carbon emissions! We're so excited that we now partner with We Are Neutral to offset all the carbon emissions from our shipping. Thank you for being here with us as we continue on our journey towards progress 💙
Yas! Ethique is my favorite! It has significantly cut down on my hair washes and my dandruff.
Ethique Frizz Wrangler for me
I bought the sample kit from Ethique and I love the frizz wrangler shampoo and the wonderbar conditioner. I have fine wavy hair and I will definitely be repurchasing! I was very excited when you said they’re being sold at Target now.... yes!
You could say your olfactory senses...are not up to snuff. 😜
Can you test out soaps 🧼 for a video
I just bought an ethique bar in the sale at Holland and barrat (uk based people), I’m excited to try it now!
Thank you for this!!! I have been iffy about Ethique but I am definitely going to get it now. I was so surprised it is sold at Target now!!! 🏃♀️🏃♀️
I loveeee hi-bar. Once I found my hair type they started being amazing to use.
I have short hair and I've honestly just been using my usual soap bar that I use for the rest of my body.
How long did you test each of these for? A single time? Multiple? I find some shampoos work really well for me the first couple times but over time make my hair greasier between washes and make me have to was more. Thanks!
Lathering also doesn’t mean it’s working. My current curly hair shampoo does not lather and it’s the best thing I’ve ever used for my hair.
same . I just tried a cowash. doesnt lather but hair feels amazing!
What are you currently using? I am looking for a bar for curly hair! Thanks!
Laura Blankenship sadly I haven’t been able to find a bar that works for me both budget wise and hair wise
Girl, if you don't like those Lush bars... I'll gladly take them off your hands lmao. They make me happy af!
I've been meaning to get a shampoo bar, this is the last push I needed :)
Great video as always!!
Lush's "Jason and the argan oil" is my go to. It's apparently the most gentle from Lush and it makes my hair super soft. Just a tip.
@@Toffnm my fave too!! Smells amazing and makes my hair feel great!
@@Toffnm Same! Love it!
Same!! I'm running out of my Treseme bottles and I am pretty sure I'm getting Ethique now
I just tried Viori and its awesome. I have super sensitive skin with a detergent allergy. Almost all shampoos liquid or bars make my hair fall out. This doesn't and my hair is so so soft.
Thank you for explaining palm oil! 🌴
Ethique also has a sample pack. It really helped me figure out which one I liked best and worked for my hair type. My first and favorite brand I've been using!
this was a great video, Shelbi, thank you !!~ :)
Professor Bizzleee, is this gonna be on the test???
I recommend Viori for everyone :)
how do you get rid of the all the shampoo bars you didn’t like without causing waste?
Body wash! Thats at least what I do
Sarah Biernat I actually use a knife to cut my bars in half or in quarters, because I don’t like to leave the entire bar inside my shower constantly because I find they dissolve faster from humidity and being splashed. So if I don’t like one I’ll take my other pieces I haven’t used yet and give them to my friends and family. This way they can get to try a different kind as well, to see if it works for their hair type and if they do end up loving it, I managed to convince someone to switch to plastic free!
She could probably just use an ass body bars
The lush avocado carwash works amazing for my 3c-4a hair 🥰 it’s probably the only solid shampoo I would trust with My Afro textured hair 👩🏾🦱
