I had a bird when I went through my divorce (African grey parrot). When we moved into a new apartment and every time I woke up he would be sleeping on my feet and this would go on for many weeks. His cage was maybe 5 feet away but he wouldn't sleep in there anymore so I built him a perch right by my head where I slept. I was so depressed and he would never leave my side, but less than a year after moving in he suddenly couldn't stand in his own and he was struggling to breathe. I got him to the vet in under 5 minutes from the time it started but he stopped breathing and couldn't be saved. Your analogy of FL is spot on. Panhandle dweller here. The winters are wet, but I still prefer it to 3 ft of snow. What I don't prefer is the ridiculous number, size, and types of roaches. I rarely saw one in the north, and when I did, it was just the generic brown ones. The first time I saw one fly, I nearly had a nervous breakdown. Lol
