Sometimes the "simpler conversations" that come from a less experienced player about basic matchups and interactions actually highlight how important the fundamental concepts are MORE than high level reviews or macro content, because Spilo needs to "prove how straightforward the right answer is". It is easy to think of these fundamental concepts as high level overviews, but they are actually small micro basics that add up as well. This video is fantastic and easily one of my favorites.
only halfway in the video and I'm super impressed by the info. I am a support main, but I'm taking away so much from this. Spilo thank you for posting these videos and not gating them behind a paywall, you are the master sensei
See THIS is how you educate ow2 players. This is what all the UA-camrs who make “unranked to gm educational” think they’re doing. Notice how this man didn’t have to go smurf and destroy people just to “educate”
All the ur2gm aren't about teaching people it's a way to show how good you are at stomping lower ranked players and make money while you are at it cause people will watch it.
"Cover isnt stopping you from being 1 shot its stopping you from being 2 shot" that is such a great way to put that. I always think of it as "hugging" cover but the way you said it explains the purpose so much better - being close to cover provides value even if you arent actively using it
for someone who has the logical understanding of different aspects of the game, but struggles to apply them to my own play, this video was incredible! something about it made it click much better than anything else i've watched or tried, so thank you!
Man the way you explained the concept of pressure and when to use your cooldowns makes so much sense . I love simple bits of wisdom like this that completely change the way you view things
Just as an idea: you could start a series: coaching coaches, where you coach coaches from different games, as in my opinion this was a weary good piece of educational content, it got down to the basics like nothing else I had ever seen.
I'm sure he's heard it before but it's absolutely insane the depth of knowledge spilo has that he's able to transition lesson to lesson and within frame of the context of the actual gameplay that's going on.
How does Spilo not have more subscribers when tons of top streamers talk about him and cite him as giving tons of knowledge and coaching. Something about Spilos coaching seems to be very analytical, understanding the chain of events, and some of the best coaching out there. Mad respect.
As a DPS main who's dumped almost 3k hours in this game through pure intuition, this really helped me see and clarify what I'm doing as a player in the game. This is an extremely helpful video, and brought words in understanding my gameplay. Will there be a potential fundamentals for support and tank? Really looking forward to that in the future if so!
Great vid, like the little blurbs which summarise the sections and its always good having a framework to create some structure when approaching something as dynamic as OW.
First guide that gave me results as soon as i applied what was said, but that’s mainly because i understood it so much easier than other guides. Keep doing awesome videos like this, and maybe an in depth tank or support fundamentals video too!
This is the video I wish I had when I first started playing. It's useful and relevant on all levels of course, but to understand the concepts of the game as a beginner, it's absolutely, absolutely gold.
My Ashe-main brain eatin good this week. First UA-cam shows me your Ashe positioning vid few days ago as the first result when I felt like learning how to git gud, and now a fundamentals review of Ashe replays lmao. Thanks man for making me learn the obvious that I couldn't catch up by myself! 💪 Also, month old comments but vid supposedly just released? Supporter exclusive vid or what?
After consuming a lot of educational content for overwatch this is easily the most helpful video just the way things are explained so many videos tell you what to do but not the 10 reasons why and what variables change that decision
I'm gonna have to use these tips! my dps is not the best so I have to think about angles, range, and presure. my mechanics arn't the best so maybe ill also work on that
As a top 500 player I think everyone overthinks the game. If it didn’t work think of what you could do instead. If it wins the game it works. No one sits there and starts doing math in their head. The fundamentals become instinct through practice and you just know what works then you get creative completely by accident.
Sure, but I’m pretty sure this is more about the logic behind why this works and not “you should think about this constantly in every game”. If you understand the concept you can apply it in many different ways.
Should I play mauga using Dps fundamentals, because he does not have sustain to play like must tanks nor does he have a consistent about of burst. If I take an extremely aggressive angle at mid range, I feel like I am just shredding them, but I want to know if this is the best thing to do?
Question based on your talk about pressure. You state that objective pressure is normally not a DPS's job. Would you say that recently this has changed somewhat, specifically with more mobile heroes like Tracer? Notice especially on payloads, you don't want the tank to be there, or the support to be in such a vulnerable position. You'd rather have them setup positions I feel for taking an optimal fight.
tracer has often been used for cart push. The Kevster VOD review a while back had this a lot, he talks about how cart is an angle. Not much has changed fundamentally from S8-9 about this, but with the meta shake up it is important to know.
i think the walking forward is from league mechanics. in a game with no cover, the only way to avoid pressure is to walk out of effective range. so if u have an advantage, u constantly input forward movement or risk wasting the opportunity. it’s a good habit in league, just doesn’t translate well to a game where pressure is much more consistent. i wonder if ur gaming background affects what aspects of ow2 u struggle with
I think we move when we hit shots because we don’t want to want to just be sitting ducks, although sitting still does mean we only have to focus on shots, the constant plausibility of someone just ending your hit streak with a single blow or two is always there
tell them that sometimes my ranked games in plat are sincerely less sweaty than quickplay. same amount of tryhard but you get more rewards for it (gold and jade guns are pretty cool if u ask me)
if enemies have Ana you can place bob at mid-close range near you and stay behind him. Even if Ana sleep him, some of enemies will shot into you and wake up Bob.
At the start of the video. I believe that moving forward will give you a advantage unless it's cover you are moving away from. Because hitting shots is the thing you gotta do as dps (and getting/ confirming kills) but If you can't hit those shots because you not as skill from a far then moving closer is the option. Also don't forget damage range falloff. If I'm cassidy and see I'm hitting 1 hp because of range then I'm going to get closer so I can actually put in work.
I can’t agree with the way you’re defining Pressure, because DPS do alleviate Pressure by taking off angles. As soon as some of the enemy are looking at you & not the rest of your team, you alleviated Pressure, and you absorbed Pressure. Just because there are fewer people shooting at your team, since they can’t shoot you & your team at the same time. I think of it more like there’s: Space, Tempo, Economy, and Pressure. Everyone engages in all of these, all of these are intertwined. Space is taking up space so the enemy cannot use that space. Most tanks take up space or deny space. Most damage disrupt space. Tempo is the cadence of the fight, and the “call & response” of the fight. Like music: “when I do it like this, you do it like that.” Tempo says “we’re down 1, pull back.” Tempo says “we got a pick, push up.” Tempo says “Reaper killable, no fade.” Tempo says “tank out of position, punish.” Tempo is where Supports live. Economy is what Ults are available & how quickly they’re being used. What do we have to react to them & what do they have to react to us? How many ults do we have, and how many ults have they used. “They used Zen ult last fight.” “The Rein has Shatter.” Pressure is our ability to control & influence the enemy’s Space, Tempo, and Economy. Pressure says “we can use Dynamite to bait Suzu.” Pressure says “taking an off-angle creates a distraction for your team.” Pressure says “that Widow is effectively taking up that space.”
Coaching is about being as simple as possible for people to understand. Breaking it down into this many categories makes it more challenging to understand and apply in a real match
(in before YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO AIM jokes), this stuff is JUST AS relevant in season 9!

Wow, great advice. Thank you.
What about knowing your match ups? I'd say knowing how to fight every hero in a 1v1 is also fundamental.
I think that falls under mechanics
Pretty sure it does since that's aim and movement and just aiming better I guess or something like that@@Vaz_G
