So relatable…during orientation at my very first nursing job, one of the nurses jokingly told me “we’re a team here and nurses don’t eat their young”. This same nurse bullied me multiple times throughout that year…It was definitely a wake up call to not always trust what they say 💁🏻‍♀️

Yeah, as a person who's been in the hospital since March 2020 up until about June 2023: probably 50% of nurses are just high school bullies who got a job. A lot of nurses are just professional "mean girls", in my opinion. 😒

😮! So disappointing to hear bc I’m interested in going into nursing after a military career! I have dealt with this in the high school climate military and I would think higher in healthcare due to the amount of education & skill needed to be good.

I just got out of a long-term care home last summer where the nurses were like that, and I made the exact same observation. In my opinion, probably 50% of nurses are like that. I've even seen nurses make this observation about other nurses.
They also treat patients differently depending on how wealthy they are, I noticed.

The reason bullying continues is because we tolerate it. We shouldn't be telling anyone to just get used to it. Its toxic behavior that impacts patient care and our health and well-being.

Nurses still eat their young to this day and it’s unfortunate. I don’t know but I believe it is an insecurity within the person doing the bullying. Every situation is different but hurting people just so you feel better about yourself is never the answer.

I got bullied by a nurse once when I was in ER as a patient and had my mom bring me cause she had a car and I needed help cause the pain got so bad at one point I could barely stand. They made fun of me saying that I'm a "mommy's girl" and how I'm childish and immature for having my mom take me there. The nurses kept talking about it for like an hour and I could hear everything cause I was near. There were literally people my age (early 20's) with their boyfriends and some older folks in their 40's accompanied by their friends. It made me feel really bad for many months after the incident but I now don't think it was wrong. I would have done the same for my mom. We're family and I love my parents.

I’m a student extern in the OR. We are basically the surgeons b****es 🙂…also the amount of times anesthesia and scrub techs has looked at me weird and basically act like I’m an idiot bc I don’t understand when they are pointing at things &idk wtf they are talking about. Some surgeons walk in and out you are expected to know if they are scrubbing in & have their glove size ready… they also talk low and if you ask what they said they will look at you dumb… like my presence just feels like a bother to them. And this is just normalized. I would’ve talked back or said something already but because I don’t want my amazing and kind preceptor to get involved in a messy situation I just suck it up. I’m reconsidering the OR for this reason, but it seems like bullying is just everywhere…

Oh man I’m sorry you are having to deal with this. I know how that feels! Some of the doctors always look down on the nurses and have such an ego on them! It’s funny when people forget they were new in the beginning too. People think experience gives them the OK to treat people in whatever way they see fit. Keep fighting for what you want whether it is OR or another speciality! Life is too short to be stuck somewhere you are not appreciated. Don’t give up!

@@ThisIsGeorgeMatthew I mean, so have I. But I've seen this trend in 2 different hospitals and 1 long-term care home since March 2020. I doubt that it's a coincidence. Even nurses themselves are leaving the field because of bad nurses.
I've also noticed that they treat patients differently depending on how wealthy they are. For example, I used to live in a long-term care home. Because I refused to get a 3rd C-19 vaccine, they took away all of my clothes (I was wearing a hospital gown), my iPad, my blanket, and wouldn't let me shower for 4 days. But another wealthier patient got to go shopping on the same day that I wasn't allowed to shower or wear clothes. My Dad ended up threatening to sue them and got some of the nurses fired.

Any time a defined group is heavily imbalanced in any one way or another, there’s going to be conflict. For awhile it seemed as though Nursing was becoming more broadly composed insofar as the people coming into it, ie more men, more backgrounds, different ages, and that was hopeful. I believe we need active efforts to continue that trend, to continue making it more representative of the makeup of society. Only then will the people who already have a propensity to behave in certain counterproductive ways when together in a large, contained group with considerable power in the institution they find themselves in, be evened-out to a level at which their behavior is overall less damaging. If we can throw around the term ‘toxic masculinity’ without a second thought, even when it’s grossly inappropriate to the situation, we should at least be able to acknowledge the existence of ‘toxic femininity’, especially when it is appropriate.
Your statement that nurses are already treated like less-than not only in the hospital but also perhaps by larger American culture is a perfect example- any average, intelligent bystander would infer that we have objectives clearly set in front of us as a profession- increase professional respect through good evidenced-based practice, good communication, clinical excellence and staying cohesive. Instead, we find BSNs trying to invalidate ADNs, the ‘popular’ ones bullying the newbies, etc- all of which is the professional equivalent of shooting ourselves in the face. That’s not something that just happens naturally in groups. That’s something that happens in groups composed very specifically. The sooner it ends, the better- for patients, hospitals, outcomes, all of it.
