Super underrated ninja IMO. I believe that he'd beat all of the current kage in a fight, with Onoki being the hardest. Even with him being as well known as he is, he never relies on the same strategy so nobody ever knows what he's going to pull out. His arsenal is so versatile that it leaves little space for weakness. Although the pains he fought and killed are weak alone, they were one of the strongest 3 man teams: Preta absorbing ninjutsu, Human making closeranged combat extremely dangerous, and Animal who keeps him running from huge OP summonings. Pain was stronger than Naruto even with full info. Plot won that battle. If Jiraiya was there in place of Naruto with all the info, there's a good chance that he would've been able to win. I'm a huge pain fan and I believe that one does not simply solo pain, yet I still think that the J-Man would've done extremely well. Although we've seen Jiraiya in numerous fights, I don't believe that we've ever seen him at his best. With all of the techniques he has, he'll give any ninja a run for his money, including someone like Itachi who I also believe that he can beat. Have we ever seen this awesome guy run low on chakra and tire out like Kakashi does? I don't think so. This guy is an absolute powerhouse with an enormous chakra reserve. RIP one of my favorite ninjas of all time.
Jiraya might be my favourite character in Naruto but i think you're overestimating his strength... In his fight with pain he still relied a lot on the frogs' genjutsu and Gamaken, and the Yahiko-Pain which he didnt have to fight against is almost a one-man-army - Naruto got owned and pinned down by that one too before he transformed into bijuu-mode. Having all the info about pain would've hardly helped ... Concerning Itachi: I don't remember Jiraya having any exceptional protection against genjutsu, and Itachis Tsukuyomi is very hard to counter and one of the best of its kind, same thing goes for Amaterasu which would need a speed like Minato's or the Raikage's to dodge. Additionally, Itachis Susanoo is also pretty uncounterable since its basically the ultimate defensive and offensive power at the same time. Against these kind of jutsus a lot of chakra, stamina and versatile arsenal is meaningless if you ask me. If i remember correctly in all of itachis fights we have never seen him try to kill anyone at all; neither kakashi, nor sasuke or any other person from konoha. If he ever really had killing intent, hardly anyone could survive more than 10 seconds... And Jiraya would also seem pale in comparison.

Jiraiya really was the greatest Shinobi of the entire series. Even a clone made from his DNA is able to 1v1 Jigen in Boruto. No wonder Itachi and Kisame ran from him.
