- Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle, except held items
3. No glitches, exploits, or save states
4. No movepool evasion-boosting moves before level 100*
Rule details:
-- I make no attempt to have the exact same rule details between generations.
-- I am allowed to manipulate my starter
-- I play the game at 4x game speed
-- For fair comparisons my Pokemon have perfect (or near perfect) DVs / IVs
-- I am allowed to catch HM users - I can use all field moves
-- Evasion boosting is allowed if the move is not obtained from the Pokemon’s movepool. For example, using Mimic or Mirror Move to boost evasion is allowed.
-- Surge's trash-can-puzzle is automatically solved
-- The bike is allowed in gen1 & 4, banned in gen2, and allowed only to bypass terrain in gen3
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- I can pause the game and timer to take breaks
-- Items obtained with the ability Pickup can only be used if the starter obtained them
-- The footage is sped up & slowed down to match the pace of my narration
These Rule details apply only to generation 1:
-- All battle-mechanic glitches are allowed (glitches that occur outside of battle are banned)
-- In generation 1, I'm allowed to skip Marowak with the Poke Doll
If you didn’t read these rules and left a comment. Thanks for helping with the algorithm.

If you're new around here, Venomoth is a Psychic/Flying type, you can't change my mind. - Ігри
Aipom: my whole gimmick is I do things with my tail hand
Scott: surely this thing doesn't punch with it's tail hand
Aipom: 🗿
octiliery may be slow but its moveset is insane. one of the best pokemon I've never used in a playthrough
Agreed. I wanted to use it in Colosseum, but I swer they madr a mistake putting Remoraid at lvl 20 not 30 like everything around it
I always thought that must have been a mistake too. I wish those games got remade/remastered/re-released@@quinceekingston4335
@@quinceekingston4335 Remoraid also got given a pretty bad ability in gen 3, where all of its moves were only 80% accurate in exchange for 50% extra power. So even if you had gotten one, you probably would have written it off.
@@Fyre11Hustle only works on physical attacks, so you can play around it by using special attacks.
@@Fyre11 I used one in post game and loved it and figured in colosseum with such limited water types it would be good but not that low of level compared to everything else and you're right the ability wpuld have sucked for physical moves
Venomoth Fact #22: Venomoth's Sleep Powder is actually Venomoth using Spore, but missing on purpose occasionally. Venomoth views most Pokemon as its children, so sometimes lets them win. Our equivalent would be a parent losing on purpose to their young kid in Smash Bros and falling down in overly dramatic fashion afterwards so they feel good.
Thanks, Venomoth!
18 resets without a flinch is absurd
I think Aipom actually does punch with its tail in the anime lol
You’ll see it very often in the DP anime.
As soon as I saw the quilfish part start I just remembered the pure elation in Scott's voice of "Sludge Sting!" I think it was around radio tower.
I love that for Octillary the second half of the game is described as “Kanto happens” 😂
I love that you're making more of these reranking videos! It's great to see you learn from prior solos and implement changes to give each contestant more deserved times! I'm also interested to see if at some future point, you make more than one for each game. Sneasel spoilers down below:
Those with a keen eye might notice that Sneasel's final moveset against Red has Hidden Power Flying sitting there doing nothing, which at the time of the stream got me thinking: is there a way to make that 4th slot useful? And indeed there was: Surf. With it, Sneasel has better odds of getting a 2HKO on Charizard than if it were to use Return (Scott himself even replied that he had tested the damage ranges). If Sneasel needed another redo, I could see Surf preventing a reset or two vs Charizard.
I want a churro playthrough complete with explanation of stats and moveset
My life has been crazy lately and haven't had a lot of time for pokemon videos. But it was crazy to click on this and see you at 68k subs. I remember subbing at like 10k a few years ago when i wa living in a closet in nyc trying to be a starving artist. Glad to see you doing well.
The reason Red sends in Venusaur before Charizard against Venomoth is because gen 2 switch AI sees that you don't have a super effective STAB on Venusaur, and that Venusaur has a super effective move (Sunny Day).
So the AI is going "Oh, he's using a Bug type and Venusaur has a Fire move! Venusaur has a good matchup here!" Which is obviously dumb because Sunny Day doesn't deal damage. But that's how gen 2 switch AI works.
Charizard also isn't weak to Venomoth's STABs and has a super effective move, but since Venusaur and Charizard have the same switch in score, it sends out Venusaur first since team order is the tiebreaker.
Busy day at the biscuit factory for Churro 🧡
I did a casual playthrough with Octillery that cute little Octopus is not to be messed with
Why wouldn't Aipom punch with its tail-fist? Seems obvious to me. Is this another subtely joke?
Scott’s delivery is so dry I can never tell if he’s quietly trolling or serious
I like to believe that's a part of the Scott's Thoughts experience
The guessing game of wether Scott is joking or not is just part of the fun for me personally
It monkeys around too much
Even though I watch all your streams I still really appreciate this style of video. I watch the stream VODs in pieces throughout the week and so sometimes I forget about the intricate details of these runs. These videos serve as great refreshers!
Nice! This was a good video for me personally as a person who doesn't watch live streams. It feels good to hear about stuff that I may have missed out on. Keep these videos up for sure!
So glad to see Aipom do so well with him being my favorite pokemon
Hi Scott, I have loved your videos on Pokémon challenges for a long time and I just want to say, it's inspired me to start doing them again.
I just wanna say that I enjoy this format. I find that when I watch your vids during breaks at work, I have to split them into too many pieces to clearly remember what's already happened. With this, I get to see at least one run per break.
Loved every second of it !!
Really Nice format for people like me who can’t catch streams very often (I live in France)
Thanks a lot
Honestly using the move mist in an actual usable scenario is the reason I subscribe to the UA-cam membership. So cool and I'm glad I got to witness it! I actually didn't know what mist did until now hahaha especially cause abilities like intimidate aren't in Gen 2 etc
I love this kind of rapid fire video ! thanks a lot !
Awww admittedly I was really hoping for the Snubbull re-ranking in this video. Maybe soon though, I really love these videos because seeing optimizations and times get cut down even further is truly a lot of fun.
Really enjoyed this style of vid
That video title is an explosion.
Thankfully we're underground so we avoid the damage.
Love these rapid fire rerankings with your modern knowledge and skills
I was planning to watch the Sanslash analysis today-but with a title like that, gonna watch this first. Also DROOOOPPED MY BALLSSS!
I love Yanma, it's terrible in gen 2. At least it got almost everything it needed in gen 4, and Yanmega is a fantastic Pokemon for any team. It's just unfortunate it could never learn the Fly HM.
Yeah, how a giant prehistoric dragonfly can't learn Fly is baffling. Yanma I'd get but Yanmega not getting it.
@@ShiningJudgment666 Remember that Gyarados historically can't learn fly, but Doduo can.
Glad you made this video Scott! I'm not a fan of livestreams so this is great
I can't catch streams most of the time since my schedule changed. I will sometimes watch the Vods but I remember Yanma live... both attempts yikes... I liked the subtle joke you told too. Anyways glad to see the updated tier list
Noticed what I am assuming is a software issue.
It says that venomoth is bug/poison, but as we all know it is the first and only triple type pokemon flying/psychic/dark. Hope this helps!
Oh, just saw you fixed it for the Claire fight.
I love recaps of stream content since i rarely if ever watch lives on YT. Gives me a chance to see even more scott playthroughs in a condensed format.
I loved the subtle Psychic/Flying in the background.
Waiting for Victreebel speedrun on the edge of my chair.
Please dont let my baby boy down XD
Great videos, really happy to see something like that more often :)
I love your channel. I love pokemon.
Such a well edited video!
This is gonna be a big one ❤
21:02 For Scott I'd say it's more the Sunk Seel Fallacy :P
I know you've said Crystal is your least favorite to play right now but I played Gold (and Yellow) the most when I was a kid so for me Gen2 is so nostalgic. Also, still patiently waiting for Golduck :)
I don't play for time, but I've done a Quilfish solo run. He's my boy, I'm devastated by your bad luck 😭
34:31 actually, in the anime, Ash's/Dawn's Aipom uses Focus Punch with her tail.
6:02 Since we're talking about really low odds, wanna hear a funny story again? (Yes, I'm still this salty about it and I will never stop retelling it)
I was at an official-but-not-really Nintendo tournament with a friend like 13 years ago, I made it to the semi-finals (this is B2/W2 btw) alongside her and she cheats by stalling my Metagross (under Trick Room) with her Ninetales' Protect 8 TIMES IN A ROW not counting the first use. Trick Room expires, Earthquake runs out of PP and I'm out thanks to a *CRITICAL HIT* Flamethrower. She did it again during the finals (6 times in a row this time) but nobody found it weird. Nobody. She won an Yveltal 3DS XL and a prerelease copy of Y.
🤔
Wait a minute, I saw that Psychic/Flying type on Venomoth.
Wow aipoms the real secret mvp. That's wild 🤣
The music slowing down for Piloswine got me lol
Really great runs. I think Aipom shocked me the most---its movepool is interesting but most of it being Special doesn't help it very much per its stats, but I always forget in Johto that Normal reigns supreme, lol.
Loved being able to catch up on my commute to work (on the bus, not driving, don’t worry!)
You glossed over the hp up trick for Karen - I know you’re moving at a fast pace but that really piqued my curiosity - could anybody in the comments elaborate?
I wasn’t really surprised at first that we hadn’t seen Pryce throughout most of the video, but I’m glad he got a bit of showtime later on for Venomoth!
Churro's purring was the highlight of this video, but the stuff after that wasn't bad either.
I would love to see a back port of flutter mane. I was just looking at misdreavus in the tier list and thought: that’s a damn shame
Damn, Aipom did better than multiple legendaries
I think the thing with Sneasel is that, while its Special stat is left wanting (meaning it can't leverage its STAB all too well), it has good Attack in a generation where Return is readily available, so its damage output isn't ALL bad!
Those defenses are still a problem though, woof.
Qwilfish Quarter right from the beginning? We're off to a great start!!
Qwilfish Quarter is a time of quality financial gain
For any Ground types with Amnesia, have you thought of getting rid of Rest and having EQ and Return?
31:58 here your display is wrong. Venomoth should be a poison/poison type. It’s weird how Pokemon decided to do a double stab so long before SV.
Azumarill is awesome. In Emerald during a nuzlocke it saved me quite a few times, and it was an Azumarill with the ability Thick Fat. Even if I got one with Huge Power, I don't think it would have helped that much aside from stronger Rollouts and Returns, as for what it used the most was Surf and Ice Beam.
Woah! I didn't expect Aipom to do so well!
Would you ever re-rank a pokemon after getting super lucky? and if it's unreasonable to repeat would you increase it's time?
Churro is such a cute cat name! Mine are named after food also lol
How does azumarill get rid of the sun against venusaur, it looks like you have to protect against 4 solarbeams until it runs out
Need a Gen 4 Azumarill run to see it at its peak!
the opposite of a luxury is an obligation
Man, Aipom delivered that pizza *fast*.
33:07 Correct me if im wrong but shouldn't he have gone for psychic because it was higher base power and coming off of a higher attack stat?
I absolutely think aipom is punching with its tail.
Wait. Waiwaiwaiwaiwait.... Metal claw was added BEFORE gen 3? Mind = blown.
Its such a shame that the Generation 2 games hide so much Johto Pokemon like Octillery, Yanmy, Teddiursa, Qwirlfish, Mantine or Phanpy late in the game or on places you usually won't go when you play the first time as a kid. And not even give many of them to the gym leaders.
I Like the thumbnail it's those unusal teams that make runs interesting and some of the unusual Pokemon, like Octillery but especially Ursaring or Donphan are not that bad or really good
Qwillfish deeeefinately deserves another re-ranking stream one day to shoot for A tier.
Octillery was my favorite Gen II Pokemon as a kid. Probably still is
nice video ^^
Wait would quillfish not wreck espeon with pin missile?
Aipoms tail ist a fist - Ashs used it for Power Punch for example
"The art of subtlety"....😂
Are there any videos where Scott breaks down the hidden power usage rates? I'd be curious to see what the best hidden power/DVs are
Ice is best. 13 defense, 15 in everything else. I’ll have to do a detailed breakdown at some point in the future.
Yanma HP electric doesnt work? Its good against charizard, blastoise and aerodactyl. Idk what can you do against Dragonites
Great video but, where's Lanturn?
Random question: If you had reply files from your older x3 runs, would replaying the run at x4 change anything?
Well there would be an advantage to the x3 runs because it’s easier to play… but I’m guessing the main reason he’s re-running them is that he understands the game a lot better now
If you ever go back and do Sneasel again, Protect seems useful for Red
I always wondered why these Gen 2 single stage Pokemon were not only awful, but stupidly rare or placed so late in the game?
Wait, why is Lanturn on the thumbnail?
I really would have loved, if they have kept Octillerys original tank Design
There is an error in Venemoth's type it's supposed to be Fire/Dark
does scott play all 6 of the pokemon on the cover...or do i wish he is doing that?
I think it’s going to be a re-ranking recap.. so yes! Just not full playthroughs for each
Here for the premiere!
I want a Flying type regional form for Octillery based on a fighter jet
piloswine is one of my faves, hes so cute
lol look at Yanma go. Hopefully this guy has a chance to redeem himself in future generations.
16:12 It doesn't seem like you made a mistake, to me. Venusaur set up Sunny Day, so it was throwing out chargless Solar Beams, so there was no opportunity to Protect against it.
Scott I just wanted to say I love you
Dark being Special is a really bad joke because it's meant to counter Psychic. But even after the Special Split, many Psychic Types have really solid Special Defence when the most common weakness is against Physical Moves. Game Freak really went, created a new Type to counter another, but gave it the damage class this type is typically stronger against. And I know that Steel was added for the same reason and is Physical in Gens II and III and that does make a whole lot of sense. So adding a Special Type appears well justified. Yet Dark got Bite, which also got an upgrade in Crunch, literally Beat Up that scales with Team Members, Feint Attack, Thief and Pursuit. Sounds like a real bias towards Physical Damage to me.
All this to say: What would change for Sneasel (and the other Dark Types, but I love Sneasel) if Dark dealt Physical Damage in Gen II?
33:05
Red thought Venomoth is water/ground type lol
Sneasel is my favorite Pokémon
CATTO GO PRRRRR
Have you tried Goldeen and Seaking?
Not in any game yet
I think sleep talk is more gen2 than protect
What if we read the rules and left a comment just to boost the algorithm
Hi Churro! 🐱
Poor puff spikey thing
Hope you're having a good day
Aipom did better than I thought…
Poor Sneasle
