I live by ohuhu markers, they’re some of my favorite art supplies. They’re not refillable, but honestly I don’t really mind because they’re so nice imo
@@gigglesfollowed i am from the future and yes they are refillable now, u can even switch the tip out to the other side bc theres 2 sides like idk how to describe it
The Strathmore 500 series is 100% cotton across the board for all the paper. I know some don't care for their 500 series precut watercolor paper, but I like it for work that isn't going to be a bunch of layers and I bind it into sketchbooks. Thanks for sharing your favorites!
Howdy! Just your friendly art supply nerd popping in to add some comments! 1. What you have there aren't actually tortillons. You've got paper stumps, or blending stumps. Blending stumps are made of compressed paper and are solid all the way through. Tortillons are wrapped strips of paper, and therefore they are hollow and very lightweight! But both are paper-based and are used for blending. 2. Idk if you've tried them, but I usually recommend Blick Studio Brush Markers as an alternative to Copic Sketch Markers. They're definitely not the cheapest option, but you can buy them individually (which isn't possible with most of the cheapest brands of alcohol markers) and you can refill them and switch out the nibs for new ones if you destroy the ones you've got. Blick Studio Brush Markers are usually a little under $4 a piece, and a 96-set is still going to cost maybe $250, but that's still significantly cheaper than Copic, and they should be fairly easy to get in the US, either in Blick stores or through their website. There are also a couple of sets of "Blick Illustrator Markers," and those might be a good way to get started with alcohol markers too! They're cheaper and smaller, and aren't sold individually, but they do come in the same colors offered in Blick Studio Brush Markers, so you can kinda replace them if you run out of one. Anyhow, that's far too long of a comment... sorry to be so wordy U__U; I'm a big fan of yours, Al! Keep doin' what you do!
Ahhh, darn it! I was just at a Blick store for the first time today (because my husband doesn’t like to drive me that far-around an hour away-and I don’t drive) and I didn’t test them out. I meant to, but I had so much to look at. Now I wish I had swatched a few.
hobby lobby has a great system set up where you actually dont have to pay any money for their products, its just like a library where you borrow books, but without a library card, and no due dates! its very cool of them to let us good christian bible thumpers borrow from them completely legally right besties?
I got a life hack for you. Elmer's cement glue (that strong smelly stuff everyone hates) makes a great watercolor fluid. So far it doesn't kill the paper and it does it's job. 😺
Art n Fly make pretty good & affordable alcohol markers, and they also offer refills. I'm not a marker artist, so I can't say how well they compare to Copics. But they blended really well and have really nice brush nibs that aren't stiff 🙌🏻
I always say "If it gets the job done, I'll use it" I get confused at people spending a lot of money in expensive supplies when they can use cheaper ones and get very similar results (sure, it's their money and that's none of my business, but still-)
Use everything you have as long as it motivates you to make art. I think this is the most important thing. I hope I dont get to preachy but from my point of view I also tend to use the more expensive supplies. Of course they do the same thing as super cheap alternatives but in my opinion they perform a lot easier and you dont need to fight against your art supplies most of the time. The professional supplies lay down colour faster, they are more vibrant and opaque and especially they are lightfast (at least they should be for the price) If you plan to sell your art, you should make sure it will last some time for the customer. Imagine buying 200$ artwork and the colours fade after only 6 month. This is actually the biggest thing about the expensive stuff.
I really want to try the Strathmore mixed media sketchbook but I really need to go through the 2 foot plus pile of sketchbooks I already have before i buy anymore lol
I cannot say no to paper. I have bins filled with various types. I like to bind books so what I don't use I give as gifts. If I see a sale something is coming home with me lol.
My ride or die art supplies are also the cheap stuff I do have a set of arteza pencils that my late mother got me year before last for Christmas and they are amazing
So I have the old arteza ones and I bought the new ones 144 set I got them on sale for like $160. The only noticeable difference is there’s more info on the marker. I like them they are good but no other difference noticeable so far.
@@1Letter23Numbers. The Michael’s near me never does BOGO on these. They only occasionally do buy one, get one 50% off, so basically 25% off total. I’d be in heaven if they’d do a true BOGO on these!
Here in europe, prismacolor pencils aren't available, but the faber-castell polychromos colored pencils are amazing, price is reasonable and you can get them either on seta or single pencils 😊
I really like the Arrtx Alp alcohol markers! They recently released the oros line of alcohol markers which have brush nibs instead of bullet nibs like the alps, but afaik, the ink used is exactly the same, so if you don't mind bullet nibs, I think they're a really great, underrated option! I like them more than my Ohuhus actually, and I'm surprised not many people seem to use them
a decent cheap alternative for copics are spectrum noir! they’re sold in sets so idk if it’s possible to buy them individually but there are a lot of colors and the ink is refillable
The Ohuhu fine liner pens are very inexpensive and are (IMO) better than the Microns. The Stabilo 88 fine liners are also great, and I really love the Le Pen ones.
I like to use crayola erasble pencil crayons somtitmes. i love the color variety!! the drags REALLY STRONG so it can fatigue your wrist really fast but DAMN that shit erases so good
ohuhu id say are a really good alternative for copics and they are alot cheaper for practically the same quality though i have been wanting a few copics so thanks for the advice on what copics to start out with ^^
If the nibs are still good, you can refill your “disposable” Pigma Microns with India/Bombay ink… it’s cheap and waterproof! Just pull the nib with tweezers and drip the ink in with a syringe 🤗
Blick is selling the Holbein Gouache. It looks like they have the individual tubes too (if you run out of a color). I think the price has gone up T_T. Personally there are certain things where you can make do with cheap supplies but paint is not one of those things. It's worthwhile to get the better gouache.
personally i really don’t like microns, instead i use the fabercastell pitt artist pen fine liner and uni pin fine line and the fudenosuke brushes, they work way better imo
I've seen a few comments already but just wanted to add that the arrtx oros markers are an amazing copic alternative!! they're alcohol markers w/ brush & chisel nibs, and are similar in quality to ohuhus! they have beautiful colour ranges & sets as well, and apparently they're planning to release open stocks! Holbein gouache from Blick is inexpensive. They have that set in 5 ml and 15 ml. I got mine open stock from them, gouache and watercolors. They also have the acryla gouache, but I've not tried it.
I just bought 4 of the Holbein acryla gouache from a Blick brick-and-mortar store today and they are AMAZING. Favorite paint I’ve ever tried. Must get more ASAP.
I know this is an old video and you might have figured this out already but be careful using markers on watercolor paper the grit / texture of the paper can / will ruin your marker tips over time it will also suck up the ink faster
