When you have an email open in the Apple Mail app you can just say “Hey Siri, remind me about this” and it will be automatically saved to your default list in the Apple Reminders app.

Hmmm I doubt Apple will ever do that. If you really want it (and trust me you will hate it when you do it) you can do in an app like Fantastical. The trouble is, it makes you calendar an overwhelming mess. You will soon turn it off.

Hi Katarina, as far as I know, there is no way to export a Reminder list in any format (including simple text) I suspect that’s because Apple see Reminders as a task list and there would be no need to export a todo list anywhere else because that would be duplication.

This is a very helpful video Carl! It was this video that inspired me to try out Apple Reminders, which is what I've been experimenting with for the last 4 weeks.
I want to add a slight addendum for those who are looking to use Reminders. Overall, it is a good to do list, especially if you don't want to spend money on a to do list and like everything to live in the Apple ecosystem. But where it gets annoying is in the Today view.
You cannot sort tasks out in the today view!
Apple have a default sorting for your Today view. So even if you have priorities set up, it will not be sorted by priority in the Today view. And nor will you be given the option to sort it out by priority. I assume that for you all, like me, your day starts with the Today view and is your ground zero. So in what is arguably the most important place in a to do list, why have Apple not given us the flexibility to sort our tasks out here?
The workaround is that you use the flag - just like Carl does here in the video. But when you're using only either a flag or no flag as the only priority distinctions, the priorities of the tasks that have no flags are diluted. That's where your P1s, P2s, P3s, P4s come in handy in Todoist.
If that's something you can live with, then Apple Reminders is a great task manager. But if you need more order in your ground zero view, then you may want to look elsewhere.
Anyway, hope this comment helps people :)

Hi Parin, Apple built Reminders for everybody else, not power-users who want more functionality. My wife, for example, doesn't care she cannot re-order her today view. All she cares about is she has a list of tasks to complete today. Not being able to re-order my today view would annoy me and for that my wife laughs at me and tells me I am so stupid. LOL (always nice to get a non-power users' perspective)

    Another query for ya.
I’m guessing w/in settings and more specific “iCloud” settings, I should turn this on for Reminders App; as currently it’s off, and that’s mainly b/c never used reminders app before, but wanna start. So, guessing if iCloud is on for Reminders App, will keep a backup and sync across all my iOS/iPadOS devices??

Hi Carl- question for you- have you used the sub-task feature at all? I don’t think I’ve seen you cover it in your videos. My thinking here is that you could combine let’s say 3 daily tasks into a single task with sub tasks for the individual items to be accomplished. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks for these videos by the way. Reminders is almost on par with Microsoft To Do. (I use To Do quite a bit as it’s part of the Microsoft 365 ecosystem)

Your last comment regarding  is the reason why I only use their native applications.
The link between Notes and Reminders makes the app Agenda pretty useless by the way.

    Great vid.
For some time I’ve been assigning a date to virtually all reminders. Your system of sending many of these to Next Week, Next Month, etc, seems to have much less friction than my system. How do you determine if an item should be assigned to an upcoming list or set with a date?

    • @Carl_Pullein

I date all tasks in this week as a guidepost and to prevent overloading my days. I rarely add a date to any other folder because I am not sure at this stage when I will be able to do them. However, if I an certain a task has to be done on a given date I will add a date.

I understand and used your method but where was the mistake when doing this: I noticed I'm delegating very much, although I was getting many things done, to my future self in "next week". When next week became first week of the month (september) and I switched THIS MONTH with NEXT MONTH and named them 09/2020 and 10/2020. I found myself pushing tasks back and forth within this week, next week and this month and next month.

    • @Carl_Pullein

It's okay to reschedule tasks. That's normal as our priorities will shift as the week goes on. But, if you are rescheduling the same tasks over and over, you need to stop and ask why? Are you ever going to do the task? If not then delete it.

I did not know Microsoft did a Windows Vista mobile phone / tablet.

Wish my reminders would show on my calendar without a 3rd party app. Apple wake up!

Unlikely to come, I'm afraid. Apple would see that as pure duplication.

Am I the only one that wants to get notifications when some completes/adds/edits a task in a shared list???? Man, such an important and basic feature and no one seems to be needing it... The app is basically useless without notifications. With proper notifications, reminders would be insane and would probably replace any to-do-list app in the app store. Shame.

Are you using reminders and todoist in combination?

    • @Carl_Pullein
      @Carl_Pullein  4 роки тому

I only use Reminders as a shopping list. Todoist is my main to-do list manager. I do these videos for those people who don't want to use third party apps.

Todoist or Microsoft To-Do much better.

It all depends what you want to from a task manager really.

Apple reminders and calender are really lacking. I really want something accessible and easy to use. Apple is just too tedious.

On the MAC just use Microsoft To Do and alleviate the pain of dealing with an incredibly neglected and overall incompetent offering from Apple - Geez as if the bloody company is a start up with just a few staff. Seriously, Apple are focussed on stuffing up the user experience with anything regarding personal organisation. Calendar, Mail and Reminders are all sub-par! Apple should have purchased Trello and or Slack but noo, let's instead blow billions on some crappy, cheesy movie with little ROI. Apple is currently full of overpaid a$$ holes with little care for the end user's ability to organise their life and business.

@@Carl_Pullein I'm very opinionated but I have been using everything Apple since 1994 I wish Apple focussed a lot more on user productivity. Many of the upgrades you are talking about should have been implemented a decade ago (not too much of a stretch for Apple's abilities)
