The D2 is like mounting a microwave on the front of your rifle. It is a NO GO for me, regardless of price point. This model, the Mawl C3 or the Phantom Hill CFT2 would be my only choices in a very underwhelming marketplace

Which is right there with the dbal and doesn't have an illuminator that's the size of 2 stacked D batteries. I'd pay 1700 if it has a brightness that rivals the mawl without the substantial glow of the D2

Going after the ATPIAL with a product that seems to take up just as much of a footprint despite the sales pitch, is only half an ounce lighter than the ATPIAL and is $600 more than the ATPIAL. Neat. It's a bold strategy, Cotton.
If you have ever used an ATPIAL, you know it is hot neutered garbage. Any vcsel laser is a huge improvement. The OGL also has a superior form factor and controls.
@@Rvckus I too have an ATPIAL. I also have a Steiner DBAL-D2 and CQBL-1 and a couple Surefire X400 and m600 vampire lights. I've used Mawls and assorted other lasers. The big issue is the illuminator is very weak. The civi version is capped at 5mw by using a diffuser lens. It has very limited range to go with its weak power. On top of that, the side emitting diode they use causes an very dirty image with lots of splotches and artifacts, so what little illumination you get isn't an even or consistent beam. VCSEL lasers provide substantially better illumination and a much cleaner beam. The slider on top for focusing the beam is also very nice. Most of the ir illuminators that I use are LED based. They may have a visual signature, but they have tons of output power. My D2 illuminates handily beyond 1000yds with a very clean beam.
This whole thing about giving military and police better gear than civilians needs to freekin end. Military and police should be restricted to the exact same items civilians are restricted to. Period. End.

I know that system like the back of hand. Yes that included using it in kill houses, actual CQB in Iraqi and Afghanistan, using it to land helos, and mark targets for gunships and warplanes. Used it for silent communication, night recon. I don't claim to know everything, but this is one area I do understand well from a practical side. I am keeping my PVS14+PEQ15 until it breaks, I wasn't planning on selling it. But for obvious reasons if I send my PEQ15 in for repairs when that time comes, I doubt I'll ever see it again.

I love the D2 but it's chunky. Using a somo gear for now till better option arrive that drives me away from just dropping 2k on a FP peq15
