      @@awigp7938 Rei explains to Shinji his problem about how he scapes reality by having an idealized world to be safe and comfortable so he can no longer be hurt. Shinji says that there is no problem in having a dream of a better world were there is no suffering, but Rei tells him that this is not a dream, what he really does is making a convenient illusion for him to not face the real consequences of life. Then Shinji understands reality, he understands that in the real world suffering is important for people to grow and be better. Because if there is no suffering then you will never change.
      And this is why Evangelion it's so important to me and for a lot of people. Because like Shinji all of us have tried in one way or another to denied reality by not facing consequences or deal with our problems. In a certain way this has helped a lot of people and personally I think that this helped me too.

      @@awigp7938 Shinji was about to choose the world with no one because he was afraid of getting hurt by others and might have been easier to live alone. But Rey told him that is not real happiness and we all find it out in the world with others such as family, friends etc.
      Shinji asked Rey “where is my reality?” and she answered “it comes after the end of your dream”. This helped Shinji make up his mind to live with others, not alone.
      In real, there is a lot of people who has been scared or suffered from uncomfortable relationships at school, at workplaces and so on. Some of them decide to give up to be with others because they believe they can never find out their happiness in it. But that is not always true. This movie wanted to show that “you can be happy interacting with people, so get outside and face the reality.”

    When I first watched this on Netflix (it was in Japanese though), I was completely shocked at how the movie switches to real life. Normally most anime shows don’t usually do that. But what made it sear into your mind was that Anno made the supposed “mundane world” actually beautiful. He made it look ethereal, alien, unrecognizable and colorful because he tries to show us (the audience) that life still continues after the movie/show is over. It may seem like the end of the world, but it just feels like it does. After that, all that’s left is you and your life outside your door. Underneath this boring world we think we despise is a world of complications, emotions and beauty. And the crazy part is that it’s Life.

    Something about seeing the Tokyo-3 Skyscrapers along with Asuka, Rei and Misato in a realistic environment is just so unsettling and uncanny. It just doesn't feel right. Its that feeling you get when you've been staring at a screen for hours, immersed in some digital world with all its bright colours and stimulation, and then finally look up again and take a look outside, and how it always feel so much more mundane and dull. But its not, its beautiful, natural and real, something that fake world on the screen could never be.
    In a way its kind of ironic, many people (despite the message of the show) wish they could escape to the world of Evangelion, hang out with their favourite characters and see all those iconic areas for themselves, but thats what we get here. We see the swings, the skyscrapers, all those icons from the show and we get to see how hollow they really are. To me, its like Anno is showing us that it is dangerous and often disappointing to make fantasy our reality. In the time between the show ending and the movie releasing it must have been exciting and nostalgic, like we're back home after being away for so long and we're finally going to get to hang out with these characters again. But it doesnt happen that way and we are forced to face reality.
    That world just isnt compatible with the mundane real world we live in, no matter how much some of us wish they were. Asuka, Rei and Misato are just ideas, dolls, fantasies. In fact, they are literally mannequins in this scene, fake, hollow and plastic, simply there to be projected on like a toy. Thats what makes them so out of place. They do not belong there. But the camera still focuses on them - because so many still cling to them while ignoring all the people in the crowd, the real people, with real emotions, real stories, and real dreams, who you actually could have connected with.
    At some point we have to move on, we cant force our fantasy into reality. Use the lessons and feelings that TV, books, movies, games, art in general (and in this modern era the internet) teach you and apply it to your life, enjoy them, share them, go on to make your own stories and worlds, but don't try and make it the focal point of your life, it wont work, because you will miss out. There is no replacement for living and embracing the real world. That may not have been the intentional meaning, but I think with Evangelion we are supposed to take something different away from it and goddamn it thats what i took from it - thanks for reading that

    When Anno turns the camera towards the audience, what he wants to imply is that many of those lucky people who were able to see the End of Evangelion, back in 1997, were actually as "pathetic" as Shinji.
    It is as if he slapped them and said: Do you realize? How can you be better than Shinji if you yourself have come here running away from your own problems?
    That's because the original ending, contained the teaching that Anno wanted to teach to the youth, but many of them despised it.

    • @artem.boldariev
      @artem.boldariev 2 роки тому +7

      I will partially reuse part of my answer from this comment section.
      I can certainly see how you came to this conclusion, but I do not think it was the only intention. To me, it seems that the intention is to blur the edge between a dream and reality. Please pay attention to the dialogue between Ray and Shinji in the background: they talk about the dream and reality. Now imagine yourself watching this movie in a theatre and seeing this scene with lots of people who are as if staring at you as if they are watching a movie in a theatre (well, they actually are). At one moment, it seems as if you are a hero in a movie that people watch on the cinema screen. That is a very powerful scene.
      I think that the intention indeed might be twofold because what you have written explains the moment when "Does it feel good?" is written on the screen. That is, "is the new ending any better?", "Are you guys satisfied?"
      I do agree with you that the original ending contains the takeaways from Anno for his audience. The realisation of this fact makes the rebuilds pretty much useless, as he just almost openly continued to milk his audience, at least the part of it who did not cut it through the original ending. Bravo!

    The original is so full of hope even during the desperate times it was written when you were lucky to be like 15, then now this version is the opposite we are in a time unprecedented prosperity globally and yet it feels like there’s no hope. The same song years apart about man reaching out to god and hoping he notices. If evangelion was just this scene it still would have been a masterpiece!

    No better choice for this scene... Bach as the ultimate reality check... every musician no matter their style 'remembers' when they hear Bach. It is a return to the divine, but also a reminder of what is human. Anno knows it well... there's a reason Bach is the choice for this scene... what is the 'Joy of Man's Desiring' if not the final, peaceful acceptance of the truth, the world around us? This world cannot be transcended until it is embraced and surrendered to.

    I rewatched this scene and it finally hit me, I too escape reality whenever I have problems.
    I would do so in the form of a crossover AU I created.
    My daydreams are starting to get worse, so I tried to find out how to fix it.
    But it's so addicting. I can't stop it.
    After rewatching this scene, I'll face reality with the guidance of the Lord!
    I'll just come back to that AU after the game involved in this au is finished (hint: It's a Toby Fox game).
    Maybe when it's finished, I can balance reality and that fictional world.
    "Ang problema ay hindi tinatakbuhan."
    I would like to thank my teacher for quoting this during first period, because her words are the reason on why I wanted to rewatch this scene in the first place.
    Thank you Teacher Sarah!!
    I may need to drop my current interests because of this, or remind myself about this promise I created.
    Sorry for commenting this much, teenage angst in a Wednesday hit me so hard that I start to realize my bad coping mechanism.

    This goes to show how much of a real-deal artist Hideaki Anno is. He told his ENTIRE fanbase to fuck off with this, this scene of their weeb stupidity being thrown right back in their face, within one of, if not THE most angry, violent, and painful animated movie in history. He told his entire audience "You're the real trash, not me," and they gave him a standing ovation in theaters for it.
    The absolute legend.

    • @Kevin-tn3wl
      @Kevin-tn3wl  2 роки тому +17

      Eva was always quite the introspective piece, with all those monologues, characters looking deep within themselves in dreamy-like sequences, like in this very scene. Anno didn't separate himself from it, he couldn't, as he WAS it, after all. That anger and passion that you are speaking of, could only be the fruit of his own frustration; directed at himself, his mental state and his way of living (and his audience, of which he was part of, of course). This was his goodbye to all of that, and what a way to end it! Before he milked his audience and the series for another good 25 years, that is.

    • @artem.boldariev
      @artem.boldariev 2 роки тому +4

      I can certainly see how you came to this conclusion, but I do not think it was the intention.
      So, brighten up! You are a hero of a story which you help to move forward ;)
      UPD:
      Although, the intention indeed might be twofold. What you have written explains the moment when "Does it feel good?" is written on the screen. That is, "is the new ending any better?", "Are you guys satisfied?"

    • @gatotsu2501
      @gatotsu2501 2 роки тому +10

      I don’t think the message here is necessarily “Fuck off.” Clearly it’s as meaningful to be inside the “dream” for him as it is for the audience, and he’s sort of analogizing the experience of being in a movie theater, experiencing the same story, to its own kind of Instrumentality - a joining of minds and souls, a shared dream, a connectedness that we’re privileged to feel. Anno’s a filmmaker, and an incredibly (some might say insanely) hardworking and dedicated one; how could what he’s saying about cinema here be anything less than sincere? But movies and dreams end. The theater empties and we return to our homes and lives; and what then? What do we live for? How do we feel connection to others? That’s what Anno is asking both himself and the audience, I think, and it’s a question he feels we can’t afford not to grapple with. He doesn’t hate Evangelion, his fans, or movies; he just wants to acknowledge within his own work that they’re no substitute for LIVING.
