The IWM also has another site, just outside of London, at the former Battle of Britain RAF station at Duxford where there are a lot of aircraft exhibits and some land vehicles as well. Duxford was in 12 Group during the Battle of Britain and was the home base of Sir Douglas Bader, the famous "legless" pilot.
Steve, after watching this video, I almost book a flight for this weekend to see this! Just joking. LOL But a well-done video! Thank you for the history of that Spitfire. I understand that in the active days of the Spitfire, it was the fastest most maneuverable fighter plane for UK Warfighters. 57 mission flights. And thank you for informing of the Lancaster Bomber. An interesting bomber - the gunner "bubbles" (sorry for the confusion of what they are) seem strategic. Can you imagine what it was like for the soldiers pulling duty inside those?? Right in the fight of battle??? I cannot. I think one of the American Bombers - either the 17 or the 24 had one right under the belly of the plane. Yikes!! I am so glad that many schools have class trips there - it means that the English schools want children/teens to learn and appreciate war history in the UK. The exhibits were so well done. Great tribute to WWI. I dont know must British history during that war. I also appreciate your sharing the effect the museum had on you. I can quite understand that. We all need that every now and again - it helps us appreciate our freedoms that much more. Keeps us sober-minded. What a vast museum. Several stories high. I enjoyed the upper level views of the planes. That may have been my favorite view; however, I so appreciated all the exhibits. Blessings.
Another interesting fact about the IWM (well I find it interesting) the building it is housed in the the central part of the Bethlem Royal Hospital, which was built when it was relocated from Moorfields. The nickname of this hospital was Bedlam, after the behaviour of the inmates (unfortunates that did not have all their facilities) and the hospital was moved to Beckenham in 1930.
Hi. Really enjoyd the video. So many interesting things that 🛩️Spitfire especially. And what is amazing you said museum is free to visit. Nowadays you usually have to pay everything.
What a beautiful building and gardens. The planes hanging from the ceiling were impressive. I think it's interesting that they have German artefa as well. I think the trench is a good idea for realism. I went to the Holocaust museum in LA and it was very intense and I think the age limit is good. I wonder how people managed to carry some of those guns. I couldn't manage being in a plane, submarine or tank with such little space. They really covered the difference in wars. It looks a very interesting place and I would like to visit the museum. We still haven't learnt how to stop wars from previous examples.
Enjoyed visiting when in London. I was able to look at the original papers written by my Great Uncle when he was a prisoner of war that are kept in the archives

Depending on your speed I was 2 hours, but could have gone more in-depth and spent at least 3 hours...enjoy your visit 👍😀
