  • With a weeklong (much need) vacation on the horizon I had to plant my tomatoes before they became overgrown! So lets plant tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, squash, and whatever else we can find before I had to rush out. At the end of the video I give you guys a real two week update on how everything is doing after planting!

I didnt have someone in my life to teach me, so im thankful to get to learn from you as one of my favorite gardeners here on youtube. Its great to finally be able to get out there and actually do it, so therapeutic but also so stressful starting out! I feel a little behind. But i know next year i wont be trying to fill all my beds and figure out my seasons here anymore. Thank you for all that you do, gardening is something i really needed in my life. and youre an amazing inspiration. Wishing you great harvests

Thanks for all the knowledge because I am a 3rd year discouraged gardener who struggles in the Texas heat. All my tomatoes had hundreds of blossoms only to lose them by our baking sun! If you haven't grown the Sarpo Miras before, and you get the same results that we had
last year you should be more than happy with the results. We planted 1lb, 12 little potatoes
last year and harvested 45+lbs at seasons end.
So, on that note, I need a promise that you'll at least film you harvesting them.
They are considered as a main crop or late variety. Meaning maturity is 110-120 days.
And when they reach maturity it's recommended to stop watering them for a couple weeks
before digging them up. Best of luck!
Oh, and thank you for your purchase, infusion of cash into the economy of Northern Maine.
    😄👍😄

Love how you are so chill about the raccoons, lol. I am prone to raccoon rages. They are the worst. Cute little parasite ridden vegetable eating terrifying hissing masked bandits. I had a bad grub season here in Florida a few months back. Racoons got to come dig exac twice. As soon as I noticed the holes we watched the cameras and found where they were hopping the fence. I got to work making my hot spray. It seems to work in most mammals. I put in a mason jar hot water, cinnamon, any kind of hot peppers or flakes, ginger powder, black pepper,, Indian chili powder.... Basically anything that burns skin or burn your nose if you breathe it. I put 1/3 of the jar vinegar. Shaking whenever you can think of it and let set at least a day but longer is better. I poured/sprayed that where I knew they were coming in and all around my beds and anyplace I could think they would be. They came the next night and got almost to the fence, stopped and turned around. No more holes to be found. They really didn't like it. My dogs and cats avoided those areas too.

I have only ever planted potatoes in the epic grow bags. I live in the inland empire where it gets hot, and even then I had 4 pounds of potatoes per bag despite my newbie mistakes. Over the winter, I tried to plant in my raised bed but they never came up (it was too cold) but my potatoes in the grow bags produced 6 lbs, even though I had to harvest early due to leaf spot fungus). You can keep the soil nice and warm in the winter by placing in full sun and rolling down the bags.

Sorry youre having trouble with raccoons. I have moles or gophers attacking my raised beds. Looking forward to the upcoming video about those on epic homestead. BTW i hope you try the cream sausage tomato. Its flavor is out of this world and makes a great sauce (mixed with reds too) its a great paste tomato but also tastes great on its own. Your garden is beautiful! Ive started zinnias so many years in pots and transplanted out when i thought they were plenty big, but something eats them immediately after planting overnight. So i dont understand why everyone says theyre so easy to grow. I cant grow them to save my life. Love seeing other peoples blooms though. 😊

Crazy I know, but I buy forks from thrift store, put in dirt (tines up, duh😉)to deter the critters(opossums as well as ground squirrels/raccoons).
    Seems to work!

Thanks for the video! Love seeing the follow-up. I’m going to give the chilly flakes a try, something keeps eating my cucumber seedlings.

I’ve been away from my garden almost 3 weeks. I spent a couple of days wrapping all my container tomatoes in the plastic barrier fencing that I had at the house. I’ll see if it kept out the raccoons and squirrels when I get back next week t week. Hopefully they left the potatoes alone too!

Hey! I suggested the pepper flakes to you a couple times and you probably was gonna do it anyway or others suggested it as well.
FYI. It seems to only work on occasion. Sometimes, I can see where a stupid raccoon or skunk attempted to dig, but stopped probably bc it got a whiff of peppers. But other times, it has gone straight through them.
I think I need to spray pepper flakes more often like 2-3 x/week. Also, I'm thinking of laying down chicken wire on top of my raised planters and cut holes for the tomatoes or onions or whatever.
Also, they seem to leave tomato cages alone so plants in the middle of tomato cages have been spared.... so far. Argh!!!

I had a raccoon issue with them digging in my pots of planted saplings! They ripped out one of my peach saplings twice and my lime tree. Thankfully they didnt die. But it was sure frustrating.

I’m trying potatoes for the first time. I got Elba, Blue, and Adirondack starters. My plan was to use grow bags and I realized I didn’t have enough soil. Then I watched your video & saw you use the straw. So I’m trying out the technique too 😅 I figure I can always add soil in a month if it looks bad, I just really didn’t want to go to the store today.

Love your videos I've been dealing with root knot nematode myself I thought they were in my soil from the beginning when I originally built the bed turns out I used bagged soil fill all of my beds it's Kellogg's brand raised bed and potting mix I also mixed in bags of black cow manure and the plants did okay for a little while and then I started having all kinds of problems when I pulled the plants up they all had big stumpy lumps all up and down the roots so I filled up 5 gallon buckets with only the Kellogg's brand raised bed and potting mix planted cucumbers tomatoes and peppers started having a ton of problems with the plants pulled them out and the same stumpy lumpy bumps all over the roots grow a bunch of marigolds and then chop and drop and bury them that's how I was able to get rid of them in my raised bed

I feel like I have thrown caution to the wind with my potato plantings this year. Great gardens. My warm plants cannot be put out for another month or more. I have started poppies in a tray this year too. With Nasturtiums and Sweet Williams, Pansies, Calendula, Lupins and Penny Black.

I really liked seeing 16 days later!! Super informative and something I think alot of youtubers should include in their gardening videos if possible as it shows us the realistic side of transplanting etc. Silly raccoons 😅 I have a problem with possoms, do you think Chilli flakes would work to deter them too?? 🌶 thank you for the video!

Is that the straw from epic gardening? That had so much grass growing.
