Went to Great Dixter some years ago now never forgot it. Christopher Lloyd was my kind of gardener and Great Dixter my kind of garden. Christopher Lloyd sadly missed.
He gives the impression that he did the gardening himself, which we know is not true. If you have the money, you employ a full time gardener or two...which he did. He, and his parents before him, could not have achieved Gt Dixter without hired help.
Christopher did do a lot of gardening himself. When you went as a paying visitor, you’d often find him in a border tying up perennials, planting and weeding. Of course, this waned as he aged and as head gardener Fergus Garrett came (later) and made things possible that Christopher had previously not considered - such as turning the rose garden into an exotic garden. So yes there were always paid horticulturists, but he also supported and helped train and inspire several generations of young gardeners at Dixter - something that this goes on as part of their training and outreach work at Dixter today.

What a lovely humble wonderful man.
This is wonderful, thank you so much for uploading it!
Really enjoyed his video.
I love how he gardened. Broke the rules. I garden the same way. 😀
Thank you!
I love orange in the garden.
4:17 "That's a strong character, isn't it."
Oh come now, Mr. Lloyd, Sackville-West was not afraid of color though either.
Wonderful. But don't rely on the auto subtitles or you will learn e.g. that 'those Russians' designed the Dixter garden lay out!
