Stalmer might be "milktoast" as you say, but I think he has a far better shot at leadership and a far better mind for politics and strategy. That means though nothing revolutionary, he might actually get the chance to do something. (Biden and America are both lost causes, even worse than the UK). Remember that most people are happy living with the status quo and don't want a "revolution". They just want to eat and live. So being "milktoast" and acceptable to all, with small gradual changes for the better might be the way to go. It usually forces less people in a corner.

In terms od the deal, u need to judge against deals EU did with other countries and with no deal. seeing they took 7 years to conclude CETA and have a habit of leaving thing to last minutes, extending the transition period means u will get a deal in June.
we can only hope the government has sth to mitigate the pangs.

It was well known by all that EU deals always go through at the very last minute, it's always been that way and always will be. It's their primary negotiating tactic to get the other side to back down. When it doesn't work the other sides walk away, this is quite common also.

  • @plerpplerp5599
    @plerpplerp5599 3 роки тому +29

The UK government's handling of the EU negotiations has been a farce from beginning to end.
Unlike the EU, the government went in without working out its own position first, then spent two years bickering with itself while the clock was running down.
Then we have the subject of sovereignty. With every international sovereign to sovereign deal, it is quite normal that a state limits its sovereignty, but it usually does so in return for practical benefits. The UK did the exact opposite by fighting over fishing waters and neglecting the financial sector where it had a competitive advantage.
The UK is equally sovereign as the EU, but they are not equals. This also true of USA and UK. Regardless of the so called "UK/US friendship", the USA is a much bigger fish.
The result with the EU has shown that the bigger party (the EU) has more or less got what it wanted while the smaller party (UK) has had to roll over and get what it had been given.
Deals based on mutual trust are the easiest to forge. Threatening to unilaterally renege on the Northern Ireland Protocol by No.10 wasn't exactly the cleverest move.
Considering that this deal is only a political declaration, it means that the UK and EU are going to be locked in negotiating the details for a long, long time.
It is doubtful that Boris Johnson and his Brexit bunch will either admit to the blundering mistakes made or even learn by them.

    • @talideon

Here's a plausible scenario re UK breakup that I don't think anyone has given much thought to:
2021: SNP wins a majority of seats in Scottish Parliament, claim a mandate for a referendum, British government gives in
2022: referendum is held and won by the SNP, wrangling with Westminster ensues
2023: agreement reached between two governments for a process that sees Scotland leave the UK in 2025
2024: British general election has a messy outcome; Tories win the most seats but Con + DUP fall about ten short of commanding a majority of the HoC; fractious coalition of Lab/SNP/LD governing Britain
2025: Scotland leaves the UK, dragging 59 SNP seats with them; Tories have a majority among the remaining seats; Scots actually quite liked the new British government as they had significant influence as well as approving more generally with the policy platform, it was only ever English Tories (and Boris Johnson in particular) that they disagreed with
In such a scenario, would the Conservatives be able to immediately form a government? And could the Scots crawl back into UK membership after having agreed to leave, in order to prevent this happening?

Those are not easily compared as most of brexit is about political grandstanding and not business. From a business standpoint (economics) Theresa's deal would have been much better I think for the UK. But it would not have given them the major political point of sovereignty as fishing. Both are worthless by the way. You can't eat sovereignty and all british fish is exported. So if they don't give the EU what it wants, than the EU will just put tariffs on the fish export and it becomes worthless.

A slim deal maybe, but it could have been way worse. Next to tariffs, on page 407 of the deal it states that in the instruments of transferring of personal data under the GDPR, the UK will not be considered a third country. That is very significant because that one alone would have caused a bit challenge for many companies, since it was very unclear if SCC's would even work with the UK because of the intelligence and 5 eyes agreements.

  • @jefferroo

The thing people seem to forget is that if you are in a relationship which you want to get out of, then you are the weaker party in negotiations, and will have to accept that you will be worse off after the split. Johnson promising the UK that things will be better, the country will be more prosperous after Brexit was always BS. Perhaps British Sovereignty and not getting assimilated into a United States of Europe will be worth all the downsides, we shall see.

If I remember correctly, what was impossible was to have an invisible, physical, red border between northern ireland and ireland, while having no internal irish sea border. That has obviously not been achieved, as there's an irish sea border in the new deal, which was EU's initial position fought by May. In fact, May's plan would have kept northern ireland closer to london, which is not at all important for the torries anymore. Weird as hell. It almost feels like they just wanted the deal to be delivered by Boris Johnson, regardless of what's in the deal. Which is even weirder. Does anyone have any better explanation?
