It is easy to say that they took all their games to extra time and what not... but remember the 2018 team defeated the Dutch, Russians, English, Argentina to finally reach the finals. This was the croatia golden generation team. Stacked with world class players. Sure croatia has done incredibly well in the last 2 world cups but the 98 team had better players.
98 team was absolutely the best team we ever had till this day. Only lack of luck and slight mistake in game with France cost us the world cup. Im positive we would have beaten Brazil they suited our style of play much better with open attacking football and they were playing weaker that tournament they almost lost couple of games until finals. There would have been alot of goals in that final for sure. As much as the teams that brought us silver and bronze in 2018 and 2022 respectively were good they were only individual quality that carried us like Modric, Rakitic, Mandzukic meanwhile 80% of that 98 team were stacked with talent. It says alot when our player won the golden boot with every single possible goal imaginable Volley, penalty, feint you name it...

One thing chanced everything for Germany, that Red Card. They had the best chances to score up to that point in the game, but Worns' clumsiness ruined the game. Everyone highlights the talent of the Croatian national team at that time, but few see that Germany was the dominant team, until then.
All 4 quarter finals were excellent (and very close), but Holland v Argentina was legendary. Italy v France 0:0 Brazil v Denmark 3:2 Holland v Argentina 2:1 (best match of the tournament, best goal of the tournament) Germany v Croatia 0:3 Germany were the better side until the red card, they still had that aura in those days where you'd think: yeah they're gonna win. This match played a part in crashing that aura, I never felt they had it since then.
