I was 15 then, watching the first half from home. Jarni scores, I get on my landline phone, call my friend, and we're outside the minute the 1st half ended. Tons of firecrackers, even guns shooting into the sky (Someone also had tracer ammo), and then the whole neighborhood driving slowly and using their horn all the time. I saw my friend get on a truck with like 3-4 girls and 3-4 guys, and wanted to get it. The driver took off, but saw me running and kinda slowed down as everyone on it cheered me to get on. I felt I broke the world sprint record in 20, 50, and 100m :D and I hoped on, and got on with them pulling me in. Everyone scraped a couple of kuna and gave the unknown driver for gas, and we spent the net hour or whatever riding through the hood, waving the Croatian flag and basically having a great time. I'll never forget that, as long as I live.

I get what you're coming from but you have to put into context. There are literally cameras everywhere now and VAR is there to scrutinise everything over and over, a lot of players are holding back now for that reason, it's doesn't mean they are inherently less aggressive. I do agree that football is way too soft now but then again back in 98 players were less concerned if they injured another player.
Croatia is such a small country but they have such a great football team. I predicted few teams to win the world cup in 2018 and then I predicted Croatia cannot be underestimated and they may surprise everyone. Sure enough, they finished second. They had bad bounces in the final and they had teammates problems. Still a great finish.

I'll never forget this match. It was full of bad blood. We wanted to pay the Germans back for that loss at the Euro 1996 in England. And boy, we did, with interests. Well back in 1996 Croatia only had themselves to blame, because on that occasion they still considered the tactical foul play equally important as playing the actual game effectively. And Croatia did have skillful players, but they always played hard and tough football. Asanović was a great technician with the ball, but he knew how to use his elbows in tackles.
Bayern didn't get to the final in 1998 , though Lothar left Bayern in march 2000 and we finally won the champions League again the following season in 2001, maybe it was just written in the stars that he wouldn't win the European cup, remember he also played in the 1987 final Vs Porto were we were leading 1-0 with 10 minutes to go and lost 2-1 .

Croatia were a fantastically skillful team,but for some reason would spend more time involved in niggedly battles and personal squabbles when they had quality to easily beat a team! And this was about the time,when u saw lots of diving& cheating become a major part of the game!
That game between Croatia and Germany at the Euro 1996 was still fresh in the Croatian players mind. The Germans got cocky before this match. This was more than a game. And Croatia did have skillful players, but they always played hard and tough football. Asanović was a great technician with the ball, but he knew how to use his elbows in tackles.
