  • The dust as settled (so to speak) on the new season of Doctor Who and, as an initial sceptic of RTD returning to the show, I was curious to see how I would rank the new era so far.
So join me for a brief discussion of the RTD2 era up until this point followed by a ranking of each episode from worst to best of The Star Beast through to Empire of Death...

You and I had very similar thoughts on the latest era. I absolutely loved the episodes that I loved, was fine on others and disappointed with the others. I’m pretty happy with it overall. I certainly love Ncuti and Millie

I found this era to be a very mixed bag. I enjoyed the 60th anniversary specials far more than I was expecting especially after having really enjoyed the Whitaker era. The series itself didn’t quite come together, although I like the variety but that does mean I found it a bit off and on and that we haven’t used the big villains yet.

I wonder if RTD intended for the Doctor to first appear in the club scene in Church on Ruby Road. He has said that it was Disney who asked for the Doctor to show up sooner.

This is what I love about the fandom; in sixty years of entertainment, we fans all have our highs and lows and we frequently differ on opinions. For example, I loved RTD1 and have been very non-plussed with RTD2. I have major issues with the majority of the Moffat era and yet thoroughly enjoy the Chibnall era. And, yes, I can almost hear the gnashing teeth of a lot of fans, but as I say, that’s the nature of the show and the fandom. As I follow your marathon, I love each of your videos whether we agree or disagree on points. I can imagine chatting with you in person over a couple of hours with numerous cuppas as we discuss/debate the fluctuations of successful storytelling in our beloved show. (But I live in Australia, so I doubt that will ever happen!)

I'm not such a fan of the noise, that hate for the Moffat era was SOOO vocal I had to leave online fandom to just enjoy what to my mind was the greatest era of the show.
And then you look at the rankings in the Dr Who Magazine, Doctor Who TV, IMDB and it was atleast as loved as the RTD era by the numbers. What it was about Moffat that made people so vocal and hateful I'll never understand.
Atleast Chibnall and RTD2 the hate is more subdued, during Moffat's era it felt like "stop enjoying it damnit!"

I'd agree with much of, but not all, of what you've said. Especially re 73 Yards. I think it's important to leave some questions unanswered, to allow fans to speculate, discuss and theorise. I actually think it's healthy.
As for the series as a whole, I found it very mixed. I like Dr Who stories where the threat is not planet, galaxy or universe threatening. Consequently I thought Boom, 73 Yards and Dot Bubble were very enjoyable and would not have looked out of place in any series of the show. I found the other episodes ranged from just ok to rather disappointing.

Except for the fact that Rogue didn't do much for me, I'd broadly agree with your analysis, and find the same problems with the same stuff as you mention, while also lauding what deserves praise, such as the good episodes, Gatwa's Doctor, Gibson as Ruby and so on.

  • @polgarauk5606

While I disagree with some of your placings I do agree with the overall sentiments.
Personally I really didn't like Rogue as an episode. I liked Rogue himself and I liked some of the interactions, it just didn't feel right we go from flirting, to fighting, to inviting him to travel on the Tardis in such a short time it didn't feel in anyway earned.
I am not a fan of that sort of costume era actually I really dislike it and while the lady whose name I can't pronounce or remember how to spell it was good I didn't like the Childur/chuldur? at all. That would be my bottom ranking I will never rewatch it even in a marathon it will be skipped.
However it would be immediately followed by Empire of Death I didn't mind Ruby's mum being ordinary I did not like the very few explanations given for the mysteries HE put in not us, it may have annoyed me a great deal actually 😂
I have never thought about ranking from the 60th episodes tho that was interesting 🤔 and would change my top episodes as I am also a big fan of Wild Blue Yonder 😁
My top 3 would probably be 1-Wild Blue Yonder, 2-Boom 3-Dot and Bubble the rest I would really need to think more about - actually 4-73Yards 😂😂

Totally agree about Rogue. Even after four viewings, it really doesn't engage me at all. It felt more like a lame period drama with an even more lame Doctor Who story built around it as an afterthought. To cap it all, I found the portrayal of the Doctor falling in -love- lust with an almost complete stranger totally at odds with what the character traditionally represents.

At the moment I'm rewatching and writing a long-form review of the series, including the specials. But for now, I'll just say that the specials were decent, with the horror stylings of Wild Blue Yonder was was my clear favourite. The Christmas special was decent enough, but beginning the series proper with Space Babies was a disastrous decision which I believe would have lost a lot of new viewers forever. The Devils Chord would have lost more. It was nonsensical, and Jinxx Monsoon didn't act, she shouted. Boom was a solid Moffatt episode. 73 Yards was interesting, but didn't make sense, and the best scene, in the pub, which I found to be the most gripping of the whole era. But it was thrown away as a joke at the expense of the English. On top of that, none of the events even happened, so had no bearing on the series long story-arc. Dot and Bubble I liked as an episode, but the 'political reveal', if I can call it that, didn't work for me, because it didn't leave me. believing I had just witnessed a society of white supremacists. U'll go into that more in my review. Rogue, I hated. The constant repetition of 'Bridgerton' had me shouting inwardly, yes we get it, it's the Bridgerton episode. How much better it coud have been if the Tardis had landed in that era, and Ruby had said something like 'It's just like Bridgerton' and the difference between life in the real Georgian era and the experience the two of them were having became ever more apparent. Then you get the reveal of role-playing Aliens, a surreal idea worthy of The Mind Robber. However, even if we'd had all that, I would still have hated the sight of the Doctor snogging the face off someone he'd just met. And I would have felt the same if it had been with a woman. I know we've had romance, to an extent, in the show before, with the Tenth and Rose. But this was a full on sexual kiss, and that marks a fundamental shift in the character of the Doctor, a change I, and many others, despise. And this is a problem with Ncuti's Doctor throughout the era. He was too human. At no point did I believe he was an Alien, a Time Lord. He was written as a sensitive modern gay-black male human. I didn't like the crying, and he hardly ever saved the day, I suspect because the idea of male saviour figures gmh has been deemed 'problematic' by RTD (following tge Zeitgeist). If that's the case, he shouldn't be writing Doctor Who, because the Doctor is, almost by definition, a saviour figure, though not necessarily a male saviour. I won't go on. I agree with Chris on the finale. I thought it was crap. Sutek was ruined, and if you are going to set up so many mysteries throughout the series, you really need to resolve them in a satisfying manner. 1) Wild Blue Yonder 2) 73 Yard 3) Dot and Bubble 4) The Church on Ruby Rd 5) Boom 6) The Giggle 7) Star Beast 8) The Legend of Ruby Sunday 9) Empire of Death 10) The Devils Chord 11) Space Babies 12) Rogue.

I share many of your thoughts and feelings. Trepidation around RTD, disappointment in the 60th as a celebration, and the crushing disappointment of the finale. That said, I come out the other end in a very similar place in my overall rankings. All things said, I think the only change I'd make would be putting The Legend of Ruby Sunday higher, just for the vibe of it alone. It speaks to one of my big frustrations with many of the finale multi-parters. I struggle to consider Utopia part of the series 3 finale because A: It's significantly higher in quality, and B: that it feels so tonal and thematically separate from the other two. Similarly here, LoRS is a hell of a hype making buildup, even if very sloppy, but EoD is such a let down in pacing, tone, style, and the aforementioned failure to deliver any satisfying conclusion to any of the setups. Great work and analysis as always!

24:56 id also argue that ontop of the general lack of impediment, the episode saying 13 was accused of witchcraft because shes a woman (when its actually a really reasonable accusation) also weakens their point.
Reasonable accusation in that a new person in town whos first act is trying to save an accused witch, is found in a graveyard surrounded by reanimated corpses while waving a "magic wand" around. Genuinely the most justified witch accusation ever.

@@abbymitchell5948 this is an excellent point. Also, thanks for giving me an opportunity to clarify that maybe impediment was a slightly ill-chosen word as I didn't necessarily want 13 to have difficulty now she's a woman and there's something to be said for how she's the same old Doctor regardless of gender. But a story where it was handled as well as (I think) Ncuti's race was handled in Dot and Bubble would have been a gift to Jodie Whittaker as an actor

    It's surprising how many episodes have disappointing endings. I've tried to base my list on which episodes I prefer from start to finish so here goes;
    12 Empire of Death
    11 Space Babies
    10 Rogue
9 The Legend of Ruby Sunday
    8 The Star Beast
7 The Church on Ruby Road
    6 The Devil's Chord
    5 73 Yards
    4 Boom
    3 The Giggle
    2 Dot and Bubble
    1 Wild Blue Yonder
Honestly, only my top two had satisfying endings for me. I absolutely love the first forty minutes of The Giggle but it takes such a massive tonal shift with the bi-generation which became problematic going forward. The ending to 73 Yards sadly brought more questions than answers, otherwise it was very good.
Would any of these break into my top ten from RTD1? Probably not.

This series wasn’t the bold reimagining of DW I wanted. Nguti and Millie deserved better material to work with. And that was essentially my same problem with the whole Chibnall era-Jodie deserved better. I hope the stories improve-story is everything if you want to keep an audience.

    My rankings
    1. 73 Yards - the best episode by miles, but still has some major flaws
    2. Wild Blue Yonder - Didn't actually like this when I first saw it, so concerning that I rank it at No. 2
    3. Boom - Typical Moffat, but after being away for a while, that's actually welcome in small doses
    4. The Giggle - Liked the Toymaker, some creepy scenes, the ending was awful on multiple levels.
    5. Legend of Ruby Sunday - good build-up to a cliff hanger, rather than been a decent episode
    6. Dot and Bubble - all about the twist - which is completely negated by the main character previously shown as a heartless killer
    7. Empire of Death - Sutekh is back - and they ruined him
    8. The Devil's Chord - has it's moments, but that ending...yuck
    9. The Star Beast - bringing back Tennant and Tate for this was really disappointing
    10. Church on Ruby Road - rubbish CGI goblins, terrible music and a disjointed episode
    11. Rogue - Captain Jack & Family of Blood rehashed, and the Doctor now a sexual predator. Terrible.
    12. Space Babies - one of the worst pieces of television I've ever seen
Overall, I preferred it to the three Chibnall seasons, but would take any other season in Doctor Who's 61 year history over it. Space Babies is now my least favourite episode in the show's history.

    • @darkwebonline2124
      @darkwebonline2124 5 днів тому

@@HOTD108_ Depends on your definition of sexual predator, obviously, but, in my book, making sexual remarks about someone you don't know, making eyes at them, locking the TARDIS door behind them after they've entered while looking back at them in a suggestive way, offer to take them with you to "argue across the stars" (because their ideologies are opposed, the Doctor's attraction is purely physical) before trying to go in for a kiss, then actually do kiss them later - all within the first 40 minutes of meeting someone, is pretty damn predatory. Even if you're liberal enough to say this is OK for regular humans this is not the way The Doctor should behave. Ever.

Largely similar feelings but I prioritise plot a little more I think, so Rogue and 73 yards are both lower on my list.
I think I've lost faith it can be resurrected - and bizarrely it was the Shalka Doctor that broke me. We've had so many Doctors retconned into the show. His description of why he's not seen Susan flies in the face of what he's said about family in every preceding episode. I don't know - I'm not articulating myself well.
This to me felt like season 24. Now I love season 26, I don't think it's impossible for them to recover but I also feel like the end must be coming with these viewing figures, the latest DWTV poll, the fact that the BBC has hidden the AI for the first time ever.
I feel like the show needs fresh blood, someone with maybe less of a free hand and more to prove. I'd love a Toby Whithouse era - I just don't see the show surviving to give us one.
