No, it’s not emotions or trying to hold back tears. It’s not that “no one can sing it like Toby,” or that the mix was bad. This is literally just them being unprepared and unrehearsed.

I do... They flew in for the show only and bypassed rehearsals ...overconfidence at it's finest. Myself and other musicians here are coworkers and friends with Toby's band ... Let's just say we're NOT happy.

@@kaohsiung99 same here. .I grew up loving the classics.. especially Hag but the 80s/90s were great ..I moved to Nashville in '89 and you still had all the icons being played plus the hipper new guys and bands like T Graham Brown, Steve Wariner, Restless Heart , Diamond Rio. There was room for everyone. Kinda sucks ass now.

Maybe have some grace guys. It appears there were some technical difficulties. This was a true live performance (not voice tracked like 99% of musicians do these days), as with live performances, things can and do go wrong.
The musicians have in-ear monitors. In the in-ears, they can hear themselves, the band, and they have a click track (a metronome to keep everyone on beat). It is pretty obvious that something got them off as the band was on and off the beat throughout the song. You can see hints of what is going on when musicians start playing with their in-ear monitors, that's their suttle signal to the soundguy, something is wrong with our in-ears. It appears they forgot lyrics, but in reality, who knows what was going through their in-ears, that's throwing them off. They could have had a click track that went crazy, a huge delay, bad signal where they literally cant hear, almost anything, but certainly this was a technical glitch rather than a musician glitch.
Thank you for the true LIVE performance rather than just lip syncing the song.
I would really like to know if either of the other two performances were also truly live, and if so what issues those performers had.

@kathyross6776 You would be surprised how difficult it is to perform correctly when in-ears are malfunctioning. I can assure you that if you know the lyrics, they know the lyrics.
In fact, if you wanna have some fun, try this... use your phone recorder and record yourself singing a song. Then go back and play the recording while singing the same song 1 second behind the recording. I bet you can't do it.
That's understandable, but messing the lyrics up numerous times? Nah.
@Cortney_Mikel you really believe true proven professionals spanning over 30 years of rock solid performances are going to miss lyrics? Multiple times? Not a chance in the world. I can tell that you are not a musician and don't understand how a bad in-ear can destroy your chances of performing a song, but ask any musician. I guarantee they had serious technical problems that prevented them from performing.
Teleprompter got em on this one. People can't even do karaoke to this one without knowing it. Rehearsals matters. Especially when doing a tribute song to a fallen hero at an awards show . Love Brooks and Dunn. Covered them a lot in the 90s in the old night clubs and bars. But disappointed. I saw this in my feed and thought "oh hell yeah", B and D covering Toby. This is gonna be awesome. Still love you guys. Glad you are still at it.

Toby was a good friend of Kix and Ronnies, I see their fumbling as this moment being quite emotional and struggling to get through the song (it's only been 2 months since he left us). Also, it seems that something was not right with the sound and equipment as band members and singers seemed to be having some issues with their ear pieces. But you know what? All things considered, I bet Toby was looking down and laughing his ass off at the whole ordeal cause that legend struck me as someone who could always find a way to have a good time no matter if something was on the fritz or not. I'm sure Brooks & Dunn meant no disrespect and will have more to say on this in the coming days/months. Still the greatest! Also, R.I.P. Big Dog Daddy, blasting Made in America in the car has been therapeutic.
You’re spot on. IEM issues! I’ve been there! I think it’s either the sound was off in their IEM, whoever was giving the cues. I use them EVERY Sunday! A few weeks ago, someone worked on the soundboard, and next rehearsal, no cues, the click was WAY too loud. Things happen.

As much as I love Brooks & Dunn, I have to say, they did awful with this song. It sounds barely thrown together and they keep struggling with the lyrics as they go through the song. It breaks my heart to see how poorly this was executed. Rest In Peace, Toby

@@justinterrymusic6861 everyone here in Nashville "kinda" knows that song as it's 30 years old. The tricky part is the meter of lyrics. If you don't start the lines early enough you get behind... which is exactly what happened. They have lyric teleprompter monitors but if you're reading them instead of knowing them you're behind the beat even before you get started. B&D just flew in for the show and not the rehearsal ..and it bit them in the ass. Unacceptable.

Everyone saying this was terrible or they forgot the lyrics, these two were some of Toby’s closest friends in country music so I know for a fact they didn’t forget the lyrics. These two are some of the best songwriters in music so they probably put their own B&D spin on it, but this was an amazing tribute.

The band had correct timing down for the song. B&D could not keep up vocally. When they got the chance to throw a vocal run in they did and sounded good. Maybe emotions played into forgetting the words ?
Agreed. Great tribute to Toby. Clearly nobody has watched Toby live… when tobys performed his songs live he switched up the words and flow so it didn’t sound like the radio
You’re giving lots of grace with this comment which I appreciate but you don’t believe your words either. They dead up bungled it. If it was one slip you could forgive it but neither of them sang confidently and both muddled the words. These guys are Hall of Famers. I love them but they did Toby dirty.

I think the speed was too fast for Ronnie, and Kix just took the song to a higher key.
Whoever's responsibility it was to oversee this aspect of Toby’s tribute should be held accountable and the apparent ill preparation by Ronnie & Kix should not go without consequences. Blessings to Toby Keith’s wife and children.

Brooks and Dunn were good friends and Ronnie has sun glasses on for a reason this must have been really hard to do imaging all the memories they had together singing this song and plus the backing band is Toby’s not brooks and Dunn so they aren’t really use to they momentum
