Twin artists, and the healing power of art

- Joe and Will Lawrance were identical twins who shared most everything, including an incredible gift for artistic expression. They also each suffered depression that led them to take their own lives. Now, their parents, Mark and Jan Lawrance, want their late sons to be remembered for their remarkable artwork (now on display at the Indy Art Center in Indianapolis), which they hope will give comfort and inspiration to others. Correspondent Jim Axelrod reports.

Bless your tender hearts. Your lovely, lovely and dearly loved boys. As someone who struggles with depression and has since childhood (I am 68), I humbly thank you for opening your hearts to others. Take good and gentle care of yourselves and enjoy the "winks" you receive from JoeWill. Their art is breathtaking!
This really touched me. JoeWill are so supremely talented, and in death, they're helping everyone who hears their story and/or sees their art.
My goodness, the pain their parents must be living with. I’m so sorry for their loss, they were so talented. Rest in peace Joe and Will.
This has got to be one of the BEST pieces CBS Sunday Morning has ever done!! A profound thank you. ♥
They put their souls on canvas and in stone. I think these brothers were probably HSPs (Highly Sensitive Persons). Every feeling is magnified times 10. That can get pretty loud to put it mildly. I hope they are at peace.
This story gives me chills. I lost my adult daughter almost 3 years ago and her artwork gives me peace.
So sorry for your loss
Condolences to you. ❤️🙏🏼
I know it's debated, but there does seem to be a link between creativity and mental illness and/or depression.
They are exceptional artists, both of them. Exceptional. How hard for parents, so hard, to lose children......and they are handling it in a very cathartic way, and helpful to others.
I lost my twin in June 2020 at the age of 51. Everything in my life has changed. Relationships, friendships, my job… everything. I’ll never be the same. I still can’t figure out how to be without him. This is an excellent piece about the connection twins have. 🖤
I am so sorry.❤️🙏🏼
Why is it that those who are the most talented & creative seem plagued by depression & those who are banal thrive? The “Happy Couple” scene in Annie Hall sums it up:”I am really shallow & empty and have no ideas, and nothing interesting to say.”
It’s an amazing story. This gallery of art is obviously a message if hope for those also suffering from depression. So glad to hear the exhibit will be permanent. Blessings to this family for sharing.
I'm a twin. My sister and I are mirror images. Growing up we had our own sign language, verbal language, eating habits, etc.
As with this family, no one could tell us apart. The loss of my twin is unfathomable to me. She is my other half.
My heart and prayers go to this family and to those who have lost loved ones.
You have my heart felt condolences. Thank you for sharing JoeWill with all of us today. ❤❤
Prayers for the parents 🙏🏽
Fantastic 😍 artwork 🎉so sad for they're loss 😢 but that art 🎨 will live forever ❤
So sorry for your loss of your children
Fantastic segment.
Great production
The parents are both lookers. They also seem to be beautiful people on the inside.
One soul that chose to come in two identical forms because they were so full of light... Many times the density of being on planet Earth is too much for sensitive souls. I know, I came very close to checking out when I was 37 years old. Depression is hard, especially when those that are suppose to love you don't understand and don't support you. Depression is especially hard when it's more a spiritual thing. Blessings to Jowill 🙏💕🕯
I understand my mother suffered from depression.
Most are so terribly misunderstood. If only there was a non stigmatizing way to help people who regularly deal with utter despair in a world that has gotten so ugly.
I am speechless on so many levels. What truly fabulous story to share❤️
Another reason CBS Sunday Morning is such a valuable piece of journalism.
Thank you for this story. Incredible art. It has such soul..
😪❤️🙏!!!! What an awful, beautiful story!
There's an increasing abstract sadness to many of the pieces...it feels like there could have been more family connectedness and discussion as time went on before their depression became intractable.
As depression deepens and settles in more tenaciously, the idea of "family connectedness and discussion"---family or anyone else, for that matter---however lovingly and well-intentioned can be difficult to bring about. Depression is very
isolating, emotion and energy draining. Being present with yourself is difficult enough, much less anyone else. Even your family. Its presence and inner pain become as constant as the beat of your heart.
Those who live with Severe depression oftentimes hide it from their families and even closest friends. Intervention is difficult if no one is aware of what it is taking place.
Thanks, Jim Axlerod and CBS Sunday Morning, for this video. With its theme of burden bearing, it was especially significant on Easter.
This was one of the most intense segments I have ever seen on CBS Sunday Morning. Powerful and humbling and emotionally draining all at the same time, and yet extremely inspiring. Such heartbreak and such talent. It was infinitely sad to see them separated from one another after the initial tragedy. Twins share a bond so strong that I doubt we will ever be able to fully grasp its overall reach and impact. God bless JoeWill. Please keep 'winking' at and watching over your parents! 💕💕
Thank you for your comments!

This is a beautifully touching story about the power of loss and the poignancy of painting.
Their story is absolutely heartbreaking.
The output! The outrageous talent! The courage and open-mindedness of the parents. ❤ What a special family.
The two were one. Awesome but heartbreaking. They should have never separated and gone their different ways. It was like dissecting each from the other, literally! 'Depression is a horrible monster that creeps up out of a black abyss and engulfs the mind and drags body and soul back into the black abyss from whence it came.' ~Chien Li~
Your sons were magnificent artists, I was so moved by their work. They were so special! As you said, they are together, and they are at peace. Bless you both.
they were such beautiful souls...here for a time and moved on back to their heavenly journey
My heart goes out to this couple. I hope their sons beautiful artwork will always bring them comfort.❤️🙏🏼
This is so tragic 😭. And one of them told his parents he would never do that 🥺.
I’m so sorry for your double losses! These boys were extraordinary and their art is fantastic. God bless you abundantly as you continue to process this. And thank you for sharing their beauty. ❤
Wow😮
This segment was a togh one to get through..blessing to the family. There artworks is amazing..they left behind a legacy like no other.Depression is not to the individual but also to their family and friends. I will cherish this clip for sometime as i have lost a godson to suicide. My blessings to you two.One day at a time.
Bless you both❤
❤....it is inconceivable, however....as another Mother who lost her only Son....God leads Us on. God Bless both of you, "JoeWill" parents.
Wow
Hauntingly beautiful story. I'd like to see a documentary in the future because these twins are a rarity.
Such talent. Breaks my heart. Life can be so hard sometimes 🤍
What a shattering story.
Tragic story of joy ❤
THANK YOU FOR THIS STORY.
Such beautiful awesome art! I hope they can find a permanent gallery to exhibit the work. Maybe the gallery can sell prints to keep it going into the future. I would love to buy and collect some of this wonderful work.
Now I understand why I see adult twins together and dressing alike...
These boys were called by God to carry the burdens of the world until they could no longer. They took with them some of the pain that makes life unbearable so thar others could find greater peace and luve more fulfilling lives! I have always desired that my life would end but i could not bear the thought of leaving my twin sister to suffer more without me. So i stay and carry the world's pain too.
Prays to the Lawrence family. 🙏🏾
Such a sad story.
Es triste que decir que Dios les de Mucha fortaleza y Amor Bendiciones a los Padres❤
So talented. So sad.
This story broke me !
I went to high school with them at north central
Did you know Will or Joe?
@@marklawrance9939 no but I seen them in the hallways a few times, north central high school is a big school like 3000 plus students
How horrific.
Did they had friends ? Or did they hide their loneliness in art when they went on separate ways? They were happy kids…and upon separating from each other they could not handle it ?? Did they checked them at their colleges? Maybe the college environment was not the adequate for their them.. Or the two cities like New York and Chicago can swallow you and make you feel VERY LONELY ❤❤❤ my condolences. May your two angels rest in peace.
I'm confused. When one of them attempted suicide after they were separated, why was there no effort to bring them back together again?
Does that truly matter now?
@@karmicsheila63 yes, because it is good to point out that the two of them were suffering from the separation and should have been put back together. And maybe if other twins experience this separation anxiety in the future, people can learn from this mistake and try to put them back together, rather than allowing this tragedy to occur.
@@koreyb That is a good point, but is that what you got from this story?
@@karmicsheila63 yes. Not one time do they mention any attempts to get the twins back together when it should have been clear after the first suicide attempt that they were not doing well apart. And of course, think of the phrase they chose to use here: "better together."
They didn’t have any agency of their own?
🎉❤🎉❤🎉🙏🏽
💔💔🙏🙏
People always say arts is fun.But why those great talented brothers didn't have fun?Why instead taking life?
My brother and I were so traumatized by your story. Usually your program presents hopeful, informative and inspiring stories. Supposed to be about the healing power of art but the first 3/4s of it is about a horribly tragic loss via sucicde. For people who have endured aspects of this pain, you should put a warning on the front of this any similar episode CBS.
Boo hoo
How can they be so happy. Even when they found out when he suicide they seemed excited
Grammar should be your friend
I truly believe that if people had a relationship with God these things would not occur, depressed or not.
Oh please don't go there
I have a very strong relationship with God, I am also very artistic, and I have suffered from suicidal thoughts. It’s complicated and if you don’t comprehend that, how sad…you don’t understand obviously.
@@jjj1951 I am not familiar with where you don't wish to go, but by your tone you seem wounded and/or broken. I will pray for you. 🙂
@@jimrebr @jimrebr I understand all too well. I am an artist, I am disabled, I've had suicidal thoughts and during my deepest and weakest time I have attempted suicide - but, thank God I failed!
At 54, I have been through much in my life. I know that everyone has problems. Everyone gets lost at some point and many times they find their way back.....sometimes they don't. My point was that since God was taken out of schools, taken out of society and taken out of social consciousness, more and more evil finds its way to more people.
For one to have a rock, a source of stability (religion/God), a moral code and the knowledge that there is something after this life - both good and bad, is a powerful strength. The knowledge that there is something else after this life is a strong incentive and reason to not give in to the incessant evils that plague us all. Those without the stability and morality give in to the evils that are ever present. I know that everyone has weak moments and times where they'll give up. Life, at times, is hard going, but having God with you makes all the difference in the world...and eternity. 🙂
Why were they depressed?
Depression that is not clinical in nature can be brought on by stressful events, loss, etc. However, Clinical depression is a disease like any other. It can feel like a spiritual death as well. A huge contributing factor was how interconnected these twins were to each other.
I wish they had asked for help. A very sad story.@@karmicsheila63
Their self portraits are sad and gloomy honestly they never seemed happy
Their artwork screams depression!
Please never say succeed at suicide.
Every Sunday it's the same routine with CBS... Climate change alarmism, holocaust guilt top-up, then needlessly putting random black people on a pedestal. EVERY SINGLE SUNDAY
So why do you continue to watch?
beautiful
