- I found this 1947 Bolinder Munktells typ 10 hot bulb/crude oil tractor at a friends place. Is was sitting outside and the engine was stuck so he took the pistons out but then left it standing in the rain again. So i bought it! Super rusty, but a rare ealy modell that should be saved.
Can we get it running again for free? I think so, lets try!

Old school mechanic here and I love the fact you love the old iron and give it the second chance it deserves. You are amazingly knowledgeable with this old machinery and seem to be a quite good mechanic.... thanks for the ride along, the time it takes to make, edit and upload these vids sir!
old trick I learned from my dad (mechanic for CAT and Standard oil back in the day in Saudi) copper head gaskets never need to be replaced unless damaged or over torqued, as you say heat them to soften the copper the coat them with grease, seems the grease forms a carbon ring around the combustion chamber and further seals the gasket... so many all over the world talk badly about 2 cycle engine designs and efficiencies, but I offer this thought:
Efficiencies can be derived from many sources, even if this engine smokes it's maintenance costs little, its consumption in parts may be nothing, because of its design, the energy used for its construction material and the food for the workers that built it would never need repeating for many lifetimes, to re pour the bearings for the rods easy, the ball bearings a bit more work but engine materials are lightly stressed, its efficiencies lay in different places, it would run on vegetable oil, a man with a good size lathe could maintain it for ever with his smarts. to scrap such a machine would be an extreme loss, not to mention the energy to ship it, destroy it, melt it, ship it again, melt and build something new more fragile that a farmer might not be allowed to repair without legal copyright laws saying you cannot repair, the modern fuel would then be all it could burn.....
this all in mind that repairable machines made of common shared parts is more sustainable, and this machine much more than many.... this design I know I would not starve to death to own repair, feed and maintain👌👍👏
Well written! Yes if you go tru the hole process of recycling things, it is always better to repair. And as you say these can run on anything that burns.

Ok. Watching video, headgasket, coat in gun grease old timers always said when reusing. The old timer around here who got ran over and killed son, who is my neighbor, he is working on being our old timer says soak them in water. Heck, soak them in water and then smear some gun grease on them. Depends on cylinder pressure I reckon, if higher compression the fire ring around combustion chamber is important. Old low compression gas motors not so much, sealing off water is more important. Good luck and thanks for video.
Thanks! Yes these hot bulbs has very low compression. So it usally isn't a problem. There is new available, someone here in Sweden still makes some every year and sell, expensive tho.. Not Zero Dollars...

My understanding is diesel and crude oil tractors generally pose less problems to rebuild. The biggest reason is the fuel provided lubrication to the cylinders, pistons and valves. Gas was more prone to burning valves and Pistons.
Hi Richard, i have to say i have watched a few of your videos, I'm not normally one for commenting on videos (i do occasionally) but i have to say that the things you bring to "show and tell" on UA-cam are truly amazing and utterly fascinating machines! Thanks for showing the interesting inner workings. The lubrication system looks pretty advanced for a two stroke. Is it possible to use the same crude oil for both fuel and lubrication on these engines?
Hi! No you have to use engine oil as lube, like SAE 20 or 30. The "modern" crude oil of the 1940 that they used was not real "-straight out of the ground" oil. It was more like medern diesel but a bit thicker and not as clean, lots of sulfur in.
I imagine one of todays diesel oils, that has alot of zinc in it, would work fairly well for lube oil.

1947 ? Incredible that they were manufacturing engines like that 2 years after the 2'nd world war ended ? At that time technologies were light years ahead of that engine .
Yes, almost unmodern when it came. But the engine was ever lastning, never broke down and was economic, so they became popular anyway. And with glow-plugs and battery start it wasnt that bad.
Like your videos but a better microphone is needed.
Enjoying the videos so far apart from the sound which is quite low compared to other channels, I watch on my laptop so not much I can do about it.
Plug in some speakers.
I watch on my phone and wear earphones if it's quiet or the weather is noisy here.

What fluid were you using to wash the crank case?
Kerosene. Here in Sweden they dont sell it anymore. But i know a guy in Denmark that brings some every year. It is very cheap and i also run many of my old engines on it.

Not always, but this one have. Original extra equipment.

Since this is a crude oil engine, did the limited fuel types available in post-WWII require building these primitive engines?
Here in Sweden petrol, kerosine, diesel have always been very expensive. like 3 times more than in the US for example. But the crude oil was pretty cheep back then. so thats why. / Richard

Hi, there are only used parts to get. Or you have to make your own parts. But i have a friend that collects ood BM machines and parts so that is gold. /Richard

The autofocus of your camera is pumping a lot hunting for something to focus on.
I think it's best to use the autofocus ones and then just switch to manual focus for a shot, since you have pretty static shots anyway :)
In the US we have what is called a single Barry hone.
Those are not good in two-strokes. Messes up the sharp edges of the ports in the cylinder. With bad sealing as result. In 4strokes they work fine.
True, on a engine with ported cylinders you must use a standard stone hone.
Hej! Jag är i fart med att köpa en BM10 med från 1950, en kompis till mig behöver plats och säljer den därför. Men den har inte varit igång på 20 år så jag undrar om du har några speciella tips förutom de du visat i dessa videorna om vad man borde kolla över innan man provar att starta den? Något speciellt man borde checka eller tänka på?
Dessa videorna har verkligen varit mycket till hjälp för att förbereda mig i alla fall! Tycker du gör ett jättebra jobb med dem!
Förresten, vid 0:44 är det en Vimpel med JB 48cc motor uppe på hyllan vid taket? Jag har själv en sån som jag fixat igång, mycket härlig moped. Har gjort ett litet arkiv med alla sånna som jag lyckats luska fram finns kvar, är snart uppe i 20 stycken. Hade varit roligt att veta mer om denna!

Hej! Ja det är en Vimpel med JB 🙂 Den köpte jag för min första riktiga lön en gång i tiden. Går kanon, jämnt och fint och helt i orört originalskick som resten på hyllan.
Ang. Bm10 så är det viktigaste att smörjapparaten fungerar. Skruva loss alla oljerör och veva och se till att olja kommer fram. Skruva sen dit rören och veva typ 50varv på smörjveven så att allt får rikligt med olja. Lossa luckorna på v sida och känn på vevlagrena. Dom ska gå att för hand skjuta i sidled men inte glappa upp och ner. Veva runt motorn och ställ ena velagret i nedre position. Veva sen på smörjveven några varv och snurra runt motorn nått varv. Det ska då droppa olja från vevlagrena om du upprepar denna procedur några gånger. Kolla upp i intruktionsboken och se så att det är olja överallt där det ska.
Kolla också luftrenaren. Den sitter dumt till så vatten ofta rinner in och rostar ihop den fullständigt. Och då kan skit och rost komma in i motorn. Ta bort burken och hela filterinsatsen.
Sen är det nog rätt lugnt. Dom kan va rätt tjuriga ibland när dom stått många år.
Skruva loss spridarna också och rengör dom och ta bort allt koks som brukar bli i spridarhålet. Byt samtliga kopparbrickor i spridarna och dra inte åt rören för hårt. Då läcker dom bars sen. Pumpa på pumpen och dra åt samtidigt så slutar du dra när det blir tätt.
Sitter det hydraulluft på den så ta det försiktigt första gången du kör den i topp. Ofta så har bönderna tagit bort övertrycksventilen för att kunna lyfta mer. Och då kan pumpen gå sönder om man kör den i topp och maxar den för länge. Kör den i topp försiktigt och se om det skriker i ventilen. Då är det bra.
Elen är ofta rätt slut på dom. Så står traktorn uppe på en höskulle så sätt inte in nått batteri för då tar det väl eld lite varstans kan en tro.
Har säkert missat nån bra punkt.

Hade inte ens tänkt på att köpa traktorn egentligen, men när chansen väl kom så var priset för bra för att säga nej :)
Jag var och hämtade den igår, fick inte igång den på plats, för den gamla blåslampan ville inte riktigt, men väl hemma fick både blåslampan och traktorn sig lite översyn efter dina tips, och sen gick det! Gick bara på en cylinder först men den kom igång på 2:an med efter en minut eller så, fick väll inte den varm nog.
Jo el och sånt var inga problem då den renoverades för ca 25 år sen, men den kördes bara med en 5-10 gånger efter det och sen har den bara stått. Så smörjsystem och sånt var nog rätt bra att kolla över!
Tog och körde en liten runda och den var riktigt rolig att köra med, gick jättefint, men var lite väl snabb tyckte jag, gjorde ca 26 km/h. Har hört att de bara ska göra 20?
Nu ska den få sig lite riktig service med nya oljor i växellåda och slutväxlar och sånt innan den körs med mer.

That “hone” is incredibly ghetto. Goodness, I guess youre just cracking the crust off those tapered cylinders…. If it works it works but better tools arent expensive.
