Sure he's got the speed and fretboard agility and huge fusion vocabulary. But it is the clean articulation and intonation of his phrasing, every time I hear him in any style, that is so amazing.
The kid is super super great but I’d love to hear if he can play these things with a pick, no fingers included. I’ve been playing for 18 years and I’ve watched a few people already take up the challenge and play everything he plays, but with a pick. If you can learn his finger picking style then you can do it as easy as he can (that would be the mathematical aspect of it: 1+1=2) but how versatile is the boy? That’s what I want to see: that’s what makes a great guitarist- versatility. If the band you’re in tonight says ‘we’re doing country’ can you chicken pick? If they say ‘prog rock’ can you play like polyphia? If they say ‘Metal’ can you play like Dimebag or Vanhalen? There’s a lot more that goes into being the best than to just play one style that tickles my ears and makes me think you’re good. He’s AWESOME but is he the best?
@@swayp5715 He seems to be an uncanny connection between the left and right hand, like they are not only working together but are the same movement. Perhaps this is where his amazing articulation originates.
That was great! When I heard his version I was both amazed and dismayed because I don't have time to go through it with a "Slow-down" app, line by line. Your breakdown helps tremendously. Thank you. Keep 'em coming please...

Matteo has to be one of the best jazz players ever. Or even generally best ever electric player. His technique is just amazing. His note selection beautiful and his speed is other worldly. Thank you for this analysis. I have really been impressed with Matteo’s playing as I have started following his playing in the last few years. Finally we have someone younger picking up and moving jazz guitar to a new level. This analysis was great. I have slowly been working though Giant steps over the years and love how the changes work I do not play with any of that speed but there are so many options to change voicing and move between these chords. Matteo has done some new things here which are very special. I recommend anyone to try and go through this song very slowly and just enjoy the sounds at whatever speed you can play . You have shared even more ideas Matteo’s ideas and your analysis are sparking some new ideas.

Found this guy from a Steve Vai clip in which Vai said that Matteo's playing was new level stuff. My. God. He was right. What that also means is that Mr. Vai now has a new infow of inspiration and information. That means maybe some new next level Vai videos! That said, Matteo is probably the Mozart of this age. Vai was right. This is playing like I've never heard. Now I've gotta deep dive jazz. I kept hearing him sound like a sax with that guitar. Some phrases were as if a human sang them bc the call and answer abilities are on some astral plane above mere mortals. I'm just an old metal/rock/blues/rap fan whi dabbled in guitar, but I know genius when I hear it.
Thank you for this analysis. I am a big fan of Matteo Mancouso (who by the way could be my son, which is a bit depressing) and the work you did, which was supposed to reveal his tricks and get the magic out of his playing, makes me admire him more !

It's easy for "Joe Sixpack" guitarists to be impressed with his dexterity and speed, but his mental speed in applying his knowledge spontaneously is what impresses me. Still, even if I could memorize his stuff, I couldn't pull it off physically. He's really a total package, music-wise. I appreciate your knowledge and enthusiasm for teaching us, as well, Doc. You're doing the Lord's work.
I just came across your video talking about Matteo's solo in Giant Steps and I really enjoyed your analysis. It gave me some valuable insight and some stuff to unpack in my own playing. Thanks for the video, I'll check out some more stuff from your channel.
You’re the second person to point that out! Gerry Coker made a book which included lots of those sort of melodies that were adapted into the jazz vernacular. Wouldn’t you know that that book is missing in action from my bookshelf!

Loved this discussion. My complaint with some fusion guitarists is that some aren’t true Jazz Guitarists, which I always think is odd. Mateo is truly a great Jazz guitarist!
That was mega wonderful! Tons of value! I think the question of how to gain accurate velocity with finger picking becomes critical to understanding such a performance. In my dreams you would apply that kind of depth and art to some of the music in the centrifugal satz clock! Lots of guitar work in all genres. Thanks and good luck!
Great suggestion, Steve! As in the first line that I played at the very top of the video… I found that I had to play it over and over and over. Also there's something that I found that you just have to have to be able to do some of the stuff he does… And that is, very large hands! I couldn't get a lot of those caudal transitions without having the guitar in that position. My PRS is also a slightly smaller scale which helped. As far as the speed? Sheeeesh... REPS! What's "centrifugal satz clock!?"
Hey Kyle! Thanks so much for that. Yes so many people have noticed that and it is one of the many movie cliché as that have ended up in the jazz vernacular. Pretty cool huh? Pat Metheny on steroids... illustrious performance by Matteo...Soaked in every second of this 8 minute exhibit of exquisite playing and tone and your wonderful commentary and breakdown of this great solo with the immense cherry of transcription on top. You have a tremendous gift of finding these gems and delivering them to us in a humble and palatable fashion. It's videos like this that inspire guitar players to keep at it. The thrill of witnessing and the thought of realizing this level of playing is humanly attainable and yet I'm not quite certain that Matteo is actually a mortal like the rest of us.

Micheal that’s amazing and I really appreciate that. I really like how in this community of ours we can express our likes and dislikes without being shelled for it! I think you’re gonna like the next project especially because I break it down and it sounds good at any speed… Blazing or slow!
@@streetwiseguitar5113 Video analysis is great. Definitely will create some do ideals on my end. Great guitar playing. But the comment makes a great point. The average a listener wants harmony, dynamics, smooth easy listening, hence smooth Jazz. Playing in a beer club will teach you that lesson fast. George Benson, Al Di Meola learned that lesson when they started communicating musically with the listener. I like the speed, pace as well. But put the right context.

Calling Matteo a fusion guitar player is seeing him in such a limited way, and doesn’t give him the tremendous credit and respect he deserves. Sure, he plays that style, but he is also a phenomenal blues, jazz, and rock guitarist when he chooses to be, and I’m sure could be extremely proficient at classical, manouche, country, and any other style he chooses to play. He is simply the greatest, most versatile guitarist I have ever heard, and I hope he continues to explore and record all styles in his unique way. The one thing I don’t like about him is that as a guitar player myself, he makes me feel like I’m wasting my time. 😅

Awesome video, picked a level of analysis that covered a lot of ground but still highlighted key ideas and some accessible chunks to borrow. Great teaching!
Thanks so much Daniel! Those words mean a lot to me and especially in the light of the fact that I am really working hard on this Josh Meader video. This thing is going to have so much in it that you can use! Also I will finally have my Patreon set up :-) it’s starting to look like a real channel/community💥 Thank you so much for your support!
Matteo can play! Kind of a breath of fresh air due to unique fingerings and using the right hand to actuate a lot of the lines in an novel way.
Matteo has to be one of the best jazz players ever. Or even generally best ever electric player. His technique is just amazing. His note selection beautiful and his speed is other worldly. And his two hand tapping is at least as good as eddys. And he is so young!! I think he has freaked out every player out there.
There's no doubt so many people love them! I'm very pleased that you enjoyed the video. Hopefully you learn a thing or two! Please subscribe and hit the notification bell so you don't miss anything upcoming!

Hi, tim! I want to thank you for that very thoughtful and insightful submission you wrote! It really is pleasing to know that somebody is getting so much from some thing I worked so hard on! I love breakdowns of music. This was fantastic. Thank you.
I'm on board, loving it, keep 'em coming n thanx.
Thank you for this analysis. I am a big fan of Matteo Mancouso (who by the way could be my son, which is a bit depressing) and the work you did, which was supposed to reveal his tricks and get the magic out of his playing, makes me admire him more !
Fab! Thank you for taking the time to not only watch the video, but make the comment as well! You support the channel by doing so. So glad you enjoyed this analysis! Hopefully you got a trigger two out of it!
Thank you very much for taking the time to write all that. And also, thanks for the support!

Nice to see someone describe complexity and nuance with the contexts fantastic job and even better with a Celtic brother at the helm 👌

That means so much. Thank you!!!
The line at 3:18 is the melody of Harold Arlen's "If I Only Had A Brain," from the Wizard of Oz.
You’re the second person to point that out! Gerry Coker made a book which included lots of those sort of melodies that were adapted into the jazz vernacular. Wouldn’t you know that that book is missing in action from my bookshelf!
*I thought the same thing as soon as I heard it.

When you play the cliche slowly it definitely reminds me of the wizard of oz "if I only had a brain" song
Thanks so much, Don! Your words mean a lot!
I loved your analysis. I still can't solo coherently over Giant Steps but this helped a ton and also gave me some new ideas. Matteo is a force of nature.

I am stubbornly old school, I am not interested with speed and flash, blurs of notes: I want melodic and harmonic invention, emotion and honest musicality. My ears have to be pleased! I like your video by the way!
You perfectly describe why Max Ostro is my favorite guitarist.
Great insight in digesting his blazing riffs. Well done on learning and transcribing for us mere mortals.

I think it is absolutely brilliant that you find so much inspiration from one person! Please don't let him make you feel bad about your own plan. How he plays is totally irrelevant to how you play!
