    UPDATE - Metra recently no longer allows recording from the front / end of the train.

      Are they closing the cab cars or are they going after photographers?

    • @NBVideosPresents
      @NBVideosPresents  3 роки тому +1

      @@victoriacyunczyk Most started closing the cab cars to the general public, and I was doing a small clip out of the front window and one of the conductors came over and said they don't allow it anymore. Something because someone got hit from the train and someone else was filming out the front window from what I been told.

    I'm a freight conductor for UP, soon I'll be collecting tickets from you on that train. A lot of people don't know that those conductors and engineers are UP employees at the Ogilvie transportation center. We're contracted by Metra.

      Cool! That is something a lot of people don't know, that is true (me being one of them lol). I did had the feeling though that most of the crew that operate the trains on the UP lines were from UP itself, with them being either conductors, or engineers.

      The Original GTR Grand Truck Railway was also run on the opposite side and I believe some railroads had the unique guage of 5'6" instead of the standard 4'8.5" Today almost all of North America's railroads especially Canada and the United States are very well intergraded especially for Freight operations. Chicago is the Biggest Hub of operations and the Biggest Bottleneck of freight trains.

    Thanks for the video!! Allowed me to revisit my past trips to work in downtown Chicago from 1978 to 1989, but only a few days every week as I was a field rep. The timetable I have for this Northwest Line, dated April 1, 1977, shows the fare to Chicago from Harvard was $2.65 one way and a monthly pass cost $71.55 then. My trip was limited to Arlington Park and I took the express most of the time. My nephew currently rides in from Crystal Lake 5 days a week. I could never do that. UP apparently continued the Northwestern's British Right of Way (Drive on the left) shown in this video. A few US Railroads did that. It is a lesson to never turn your back on a railroad line for thinking they all follow US Rules of the Road---they don't.

      Ah, that from my view wasn't the smartest move to make, especially when there was an oncoming train. Yes, this is the longest route Metra has, and what makes it more longer are from the station stops the trains make, as they stop at all the stations basically. I took the Milwaukee line, and while it's shorter, you see more trains than the Harvard line.

    I'm only 23 minutes in so far, but how fast is this train travelling? Over here in GB we don't have many long straight lines like this, but where we do we tend to tear along them at somewhere between 90 and 110 mph. Are your trains just so big and long, they need engines with muscle rather than speed?

    • @NBVideosPresents
      @NBVideosPresents  5 років тому

      I would say at most 55mph in some areas.
      No, I won't say the the reason for slow moving trains. The main reason is, by the time the train reaches the max speed, it'll need to start slowing down because it's approaching the station, and most are only a few miles apart (since it is a commuter train).
      As for freight, they can go up to 60mph, but the average is 55mph.

    • @larrywharf1583
      @larrywharf1583 5 років тому

      I've reached journey's end! As the train's pulling into the station I noticed a CTA pulling along in the background and I don't know why this thought struck me at that moment. @NBVideosPresents  5 років тому

      @@larrywharf1583 congrats at making it to the end!
      Hmm, I don't think I understand the CTA part, but for most of their system,they are right handed (aka right track) for their routes.
      As for the can ride, not all are left track, just certain ones. In this video, UP purchased the CNW railway, which operated on the left track, and instead of re-signaling the ex-CNW tracks, they just left it and operate as-is.

    No wonder Metra has so many accidents. DING DING DING "Honey whats that dinging sound?" SMASH. use a whistle so a car can hear you. I always called Metra the Ding a ling railway cuz all their trains do is ding ding ding. you might as well just remove the horns from the engines because apparently the engineer doesn't know how to press the button or follow FRA regulations. I don't even understand how people on the Electric line manage not to go nuts. all you hear is the damn bell for over an hour. I was actually reading that Northwestern Railway was the only backwards railway in the US. All their signals are on set for left track running, not right. Apparently it was to expensive to change sides so they just kept it.

      It’s a quiet zone they can sound only in emergencies or when there is a meet
