Your mouthpiece is very interesting, I’m not familiar with musical instruments, but I’d say that’s probably a trumpet or even trombone mouthpiece instead of a bugle mouthpiece.

    The peonies buds have a slightly sweet, sticky sap covering the buds. Ants clean off the sap allowing the flowers to emerge, then they stick around to look for more sweetness and fertilize the flowers. The prickly bushes look like privet bushes. They were planted to make hedges and have lots of red berries for wild critters. The birds spread their seeds far and wide, they are a thorny pain.

      It's a little too big to be the modern size trumpet mouthpiece so my guess is bugle (civil war era) or French horn (modern era)

    • @i90coins
      @i90coins 4 роки тому +3

      I'm going to say tenor trombone or baritone horn. Definitely from an instrument that would be playing in the tenor clef range. Too big to be from a trumpet, too small to be from a tuba.

    • @mudbob1
      @mudbob1 4 роки тому +1

      Yes, it's far too big to be a trumpet, french horn, or bugle mouthpiece. Probably a baritone horn, I don't think trombones were nearly as common then.

    My grt. grandma used to say she was, "Slop-bucket Dutch." Now I always wondered what on earth she meant?! All that talk of chamber pots made me think of it. I have a very nice old porcelain chamber pot with a lovely blue pattern of a bird of paradise on it. The cream white lid does not match but came from a much older pot. I use it for decor, but my grandma and grt grandma would sure laugh to see that. I suppose it's about the same as having a toilet in your front yard with petunia's in it. ...ha ha ha... There is a story handed down in my family about chamber pots the family had during the Civil War. They lived on the southeastern boarder of Missouri & northern Arkansas. Both Armies came back and forth often and ravaged the area. The Union Army came through one time and took most of their food and milk, so from then on the milk was hidden under the beds in the chamber pots, and a bucket was used for doing your business. In this way they were able to keep enough milk to feed their babies and children until the war ended. They took their food and hid it in the dense underbrush in an old corn-crib they converted to storage. Fortunately it was not found by soldiers from either side either, so they were much better off than many of their neighbors, and did not starve.
    This may not have had a plethora of finds, but that bugle mouthpiece was sure nice. Maybe the players old man chucked it out there because he couldn't stand the sound of his kid practicing?! My brother played trumpet in school and his practicing would just rip your ears off. I used to head out to the back woods to get away from it. ...ha ha ha... Looks like you still had a great time, and I look forward to what Todd has to tell us about the place. For me it's just as interesting as the finds, and sometimes more so.

Perhaps the mouth piece was from a vet who went up hill to sound reveille then chow but was attacked at taps thus damaging the horn. Things like that strap or wire that resists being pulled out, rather than digging it all the way or pulling with your hard hands and having a chance of slipping and cutting yourself. Try wrapping it around something ( piece of metal you've dug or decent stick) and put a piece of cloth around then pull. Usually gives you a lot of leverage.

    Hi Chig, I like irises as well, we have a bunch growing all over the place in fields and by railroad tracks here in Oregon, as far as your peonies and ants- ants actually take advantage of the peony flowers, harvesting much nectar from the plants. But the peonies also benefit, in that ants often devour any insects that are attacking the plants.

    I think the mouthpiece you found goes to a Trombone.If it isn't a trombone a mouth piece it's probably some other low brass instrument(Trombone, Tuba, Euphonium) and not for a high brass instrument (Trumpet, French Horn, Bugle).I think it's a trombone mouthpiece because of its depth and width. Other than a Trombone I think the second most likely thing it could go to is a Euphonium/Baritone. It looks like it may have been dropped on something with an edge to cause that strange damage to the shank. Also to answer your question about what instruments you blow into are called they are usually called "wind instruments". BTW I'm a Trombone player from a band I Texas.
    P.S. Keep doing these awesome videos Chig!
    Edit: Also you could probably tell what it was used for if you could see the text on the side of the mouthpiece that says exactly what it is. For example, the mouthpiece I use for my personal trombone is a Vincent Bach 6 and 1/2 AL. There are many different mouth pieces for specific instruments. The Trombone I loan from my high school on the other hand uses a slightly different mouthpiece because it has a larger bore so the walls of the shank of the mouthpiece are thicker.
