Unfortunately, I am in no position to enjoy clothes made out of these gorgeous fabrics, not because I cannot afford them but because I do not have a social life that would justify them, I know it sounds pathetic, but that is the way it is. I am an old man (64) living in an age and a country that has turned its back on elegance. Let´s face it, nowadays wearing a nice jacket and a tie turns you into a creature from another planet.
Having said this, I still enjoyed this wonderful video and I am happy that there are people like Mr. Mahon and Mr. Dunsford. I wish you and all the dedicated craftsmen who produce these beautiful fabrics and garments health and success in your noble trade. Greetings from Buenos Aires.

A delightful field trip! Thank you Mr n Mrs Mahon and the Redmayne team for your generosity sharing a splice of your trade!
As comparison in fabric and cloth comes I'd like to think of the Italian as the playful artist while the English as the skillful technician. The Italian makes cloth for the dreamer, the dandy, the fashionista/to while the English makes timeless, classic, robust, and utilitarian cloths. Most importantly, neither is better than the other.
On the "Original Solaro" - as a sartorial enthusiast myself, I've looked and felt many many many variations of the solaro cloth and NO ONE makes it like Smith Woollens (Harrison's of Edinburgh) does - the shade, the weight, and the tactile handfeel are unmatched. Spring Ram is one of my absolute favorites in high-twist/open weave. Moonbeam is exactly how Mr. Mahon said "poor man's cashmere" - it is super soft to the touch, warm, and very affordable!

I really enjoyed that. Count me as a believer that the heavier the cloth, the better. I had a Redmayne Remote Suit Service suit made this past year in a 15/16 oz. Harrisons Universal cloth, and I have to say that before I received it I was a little worried it would be too heavy. But what I've found is that it's just wonderful to wear and oozes quality. I'm sure I'll be enjoying that suit for decades.

Thank you do much for this video. My thanks also extends to Mark Dunsfold for saving many of the former companies that supplied great cloth and incorporating into his own company.
I have always maintained that there are four smells that remain with you throughout your life : the smell of a fine cigar , that of a beautiful lady, fine leather and finally wonderfully woven cloth whether it is worsted or tweed.
Wishing you and the staff at Redmaynes very best wishes for the future.

One more comment. If you took me into this warehouse (as your client), I would be hard pressed not to walk out with an order of 4 suits, 5 jackets, and 6 pants. It's great to see little swatches in books but it's quite another to see bolts of fabric that you can touch. I think (from one business owner to another), you should take your van, load it up with clients, and drive up to the warehouse. You will probably need to hire at least 3 more people. Cheers.

How clumsy I was! I was waiting for this video on the Savile Row Tales blog, but finally, I found it on UA-cam.
Tom and I are in the same age group, so I traced my life when Mr Dansford explained the events about acquiring famous brands. I remember the time when I visited the Smithwollens warehouse; coincidentally, I heard the news of London's underground terrorism on the radio there.
Tom mentioned Ray, so I remember meeting Mr Ray Hamilton at W. Bill's basement warehouse. I wonder how he has been, too.
The video contains a lot of exciting information, but I particularly enjoyed the comparison of Fresco and Fimmresco.
The funniest part was that Tom called Moonbeames cloth Poorman's cashmere. I once brought this cloth to a famous Italian Sartoria in Nales, they mistook it for cashmere.

Hello Mr Mahon. Thank you for this video. I use Harrison's a lot. I just bought the Lessers 13oz 303 fabric. There was one tailor he stated that the quality went down. For example the Lessors cloth from the 90s, such as their 7-8oz were more durable. Under new ownership, the cloth quality is not the same. What are your thoughts on that?

Fascinating ..and for me a touch nostalgic. When I joined my late fathers retail clothing business established in 1971 (it was originally a very small shop selling a somewhat strange mix of quality workwear and formal clothing from brands such as Lybro, Bladen, Daks, Gannex, Christy Hats, Barbour , Magee, Viyella etc) in the early eighties there were many LBD pattern bunches scattered about the place…i’m not from a tailoring background myself but my dad had a few made to measure customers who ordered mainly trousers from LBD…including one guy who ordered two pair every year in exactly the same colour/cloth for over thirty years. Our shop moved away from formal suiting and is now closed but I wondered if LBD still existed and now I know. Thanks for this.
