    Have you tried supercavitating tips? From what I’ve seen of supercavitating bullets, it doesn’t seem all that complicated to machine from rod stock. From back to front: a cylindrical section for weight, a long conical section, a small round groove most of the way to the tip, and a rather blunt but small cone tip.

    • @salimufari
      @salimufari Рік тому +4

      A big issue with cavitating tips is the act of cavitation slows the spear a whole lot. Remember what cavitation is. A nearly explosive vacuum happening at the edge of an object in a gas or liquid.

    Really cool! But I'm unsure how well these would work for spearfishing.
    I can see two glaring problems. The first being the lack of any string which is crucial in spearfishing, and the second being the fairly small projectiles.
    I could imagine it working, but it depends on accuracy a lot. When you hit a fish when spearfishing, it's often still alive after the first shot. The string keeps it tethered to the speargun so it can't swim away before it dies. With a gun like this however, your shots need to be very accurate. You'd need to hit the fish directly in the head, or along the spine to immobilize it instantly before it could swim away. You get the benefit of follow up shots and an easier time aiming compared to a speargun, but since the weapon is quite loud, it might scare the fish away after the first shot if you miss, or you could hit the fish poorly and it'd just swim away before dying much later, far out of your reach.
    Since the projectile is small as well, that means you have less of a chance of hitting an important organ; such as the brain or spine, which you would need to do because of the lack of string.
    I'd really be interested to see someone spearfishing with this though. The small size and possibility for follow up shots could make it an interesting choice for people spearfishing larger fish.
    For example, if you speared a tuna or stripped bass poorly, and it was still alive and putting up a fight, you could definitely use something like this to quickly shoot it in the head and kill it.
    Kinda like an actual sidearm lol
    Again, it's a really cool design!

      @@Christianos_Theophile You are partly correct. Fish blood is going to get other fish(sharks)attention. (unlike human blood that is exaggerated in movies)And sharks from miles away can detect the blood. But there has to be other things that attract them, such as noise and thrashing about to really get them charging in for a feeding frenzy. The close up method of deterring a shark from feeding on you is to bludgeon its snout where its senses are. This weapon shot there from a short distance would do the same, only more dramatic. Shooting another part of the body might distract it, but not likely going to have the same effect. And on a side note, a sharks 1st hit on a person is to see if it is prey or unworthy food.(like an object) Which smacking the snout before the hit or at the time of the "bump" is often sufficient. But most people don't want to risk the close encounter, so they go straight for the pre-emptive strike out of fear.

    A lot of people forget what water ranges are vs in air. Max range in water being 2-3 meters is similar to 15-20 meters in air. That range is only really for accuracy not penetration power. Salt water is roughly 850 x more dense than air when accounting for salt & that's at surface level. As you go deeper in water the pressure & density goes up dramatically.

    • @Slingshotchannel

    Are you aware a similar concept was successfully produced in the 1960's, the Johnson submarine speargun (SMG) (Alock and Pierce also made a single barreled version) used waterproof plastic sleeved 22lr ramset blanks to propel a spear. These spearguns were awfully heavy, most had multiple barrels (in a Revolver/Gatling gun type assembly) and even though they were only 22lr they were very loud.....but quite powerful. Banded from use in most places around the world, one of my spearo mates used to use one in the 80's.

Maybe useful for zombie apocalypse, but when it comes to gun size small spearguns have fundamental issues with released spear line capacity, and spear stability and inertia. I did test crossbows under water, but they don't work. The limbs are slowed down very much by the water resistance, the bolts fly maybe 2 meters and then sink down, tips first. Rubber based spear guns work much better. But they are bulky. If you want a pistol size spear gun, compressed air or gun powder is the best option.

    so whats the use of this harpoon if no string atached to the arrow? fish do not fall dead by this sharp arrow unless it has explosive head ruining entire catch, I guess it is a self defense gun sold under cover of regulations...please show us a field test under real condition , also how does your ears get after that close explsion under water?

    • @Slingshotchannel
      @Slingshotchannel  Рік тому +2

      You can very easily attach a string to the bolts, right behind the tip. Ears, no problem. You feel the shot in the stomach, but it is much louder above water.

    • @stephen-boddy
      @stephen-boddy Рік тому

      People in the comments are making the common mistake of assuming it is a shotgun shell. It is compressed air. No explosion happens. It's probably loud, but _not_ ear damaging.

      I don't really know, it isn't a very good harpoon gun for the money. It just is much smaller and lighter than competition. We still sell it really really well. My suspicion is that most people buy it because it is unregulated and it is super super deadly above water. So they abuse it for self defense.
