    • @andrewb378
      @andrewb378 6 місяців тому +17

      I don't think it's fair to assume the runner would have gone back to the base if he had known. I don't think you should assume someone is going to make the smart decision. Yeah, the runner almost certainly goes back to first, but there are pro baseball players that have been caught out in these situations before and he's just a kid deep into extras. If there was ever a time someone would make a mental mistake it's right now. The only players who actually did the correct thing based on what happened are the defenders and they got screwed.

      @@joshhoops6057 I agree that 99% of the time the runner gets back but I don't think we should assume that just because the runner usually gets back they would get back by default. Like I said, it's a mistake that does happen, even at the professional level. These kids are not pros and it's the end of a long game late at night. I can almost guarantee the ump got it wrong for this exact reason. He's just tired. Why would we assume the kid would get it right?

  • @sydhamelin1265
    @sydhamelin1265 6 місяців тому +70

    Ok, I see why the umps called it this way. The runner didn't have an angle on the catch, and the body motion looks like the outfielder missed the ball, then fielded it off the wall, even though that's not what happened. So the runner looks to the ump, who signals him safe at 2nd, confirming the wrong notion that the outfielder didn't catch.
    Had the first ump not screwed up, the runner would've been back at first, as he was paused between first and second, waiting for the umps call.
    So, wrong call by the first ump, but overall the final call did put the game back to what it would've been, had the right call been made. Really interesting one.

    • @davej3781

      I also didn't realize he caught it when I initially watched this video. Technically U1 was signaling "no catch" and not "safe at 2nd" but they use the same mechanics so it's easy to confuse them. I agree had "catch" been called initially the runner would of stayed at first so returning him was the correct call in the end.

  • @key_of_destiny4712
    @key_of_destiny4712 6 місяців тому +9

    It’s upsetting on both sides. Obviously, defense wants a double play, but offense wants a free RISP. The ump blew it, replay proves it, so the only compromise is to say that the runner wouldn’t have gone to second without touching first again if the ump didn’t massively screw up. So we have to keep the runner at first due to it being the most logical outcome if it was called correctly. The offense benefits more, but it’s the right decision.

    • @AllUpOns
      @AllUpOns 5 місяців тому +2

      Really, no one benefited. The baserunner was correctly following the umpire's call, and there's almost no way he wouldn't have made it back to first if the correct call was made. I guess he gets the benefit of the doubt that he wouldn't have made a massive blunder, but that's it.

    I think the umpires did the best they could after the bad call. You can see on video that the runner was running on the pitch, but had stopped between the bases, and only proceeded after the umpire had signaled safe (no catch). The runner played the ball correctly, and was on the wrong base because of the umpire's bad call. When the umpire signaled the ball hit the ground, the runner couldn't return to first since that would have been an occupied base.

    Watch at the 10 second mark. The runner has completely stopped running, and is tracking the ball. He's not even halfway to second base. There is no way he doesn't easily make it back to first, and not get double off, if this is called correctly initially. The proper call was ultimately made in sending him back to first.

    Bottom line: if the umpire's (incorrect) call (in this case, a "catch") places a runner(s) in jeopardy, then if the rules allow a replay or a consult, then the runner(s) need to be placed at the base(s) that they would have MOST LIKELY been if the (incorrect) call had not been made in the first place. If the initial call was a "catch", would R1 have tagged up? Not sure. But what is certain is that his standing on 2b is a result of U1's incorrect call of "no catch", not because he failed to tag up properly. U1's call placed R1 in jeopardy. Ole Miss is a good team, came back to win it in extras. If they lost, they can blame the ump, but why bother, just play the game.

    A play like this happen to me on a diving play in college. The runners not knowing the call advanced and we thought we turned a triple play to win the game. It was a rough day but a similar thing happened a year later in fall ball and I had a discussion with the umpire, he said it looked like I trapped the ball off a bounce. I had an A-10 outfield glove that was black with a Grey pocket. I'm convinced my glove bounced and he couldn't tell the ball from glove. Seeing the outfielder with a white glove I'm not surprised the umpire made a mistake.

    I get that coaches feel like they have to kick up some shit for appearances when a call isn't made correctly, but this is really a perfect example of good officiating **in response to a bad call**. Bad calls happen, but the aftermath of it was handled perfectly. If the correct call was made, the R1 would have had plenty of time to get back to B1. He just didn't go because the umpire signaled "no catch". It was the right solution to put him back on B1.

    Jomboy, you know cricket - if an umpire would have made similar error he would have simply called dead ball, so that anything after the catch would not have been live. It's the eternal get out of jail card for umpires who make a mistake (which happens, they're not robots!)

    I agree that the runner should be allowed to go back to first. If the UMP didn't stop the runner with the wrong call, the runner WOULD have had a chance to run back to first. Reversing the call to have batter out/runner returns was correct.

    If ump calls it right... runner on first. But ump screws up, fixes it... runner on first. Same result so why is Ole Miss upset? If anything, the runner should be pissed as he could've tagged up and then maybe ran to 2nd.?.

      Runner took off on the pitch. He was hanging out between 1st and 2nd watching the play. If he sees that it's caught he can get back to first, but there's no way he gets back to first in time to tag up and get to second.

    Obviously a bad call by the ump that was properly corrected. Umpire error can't put a runner in jeopardy. What would have happened if the right called was made? Place the runner(s) based on that.

    I can see how the umpire might have been fooled with the RF's movement and the wrong angle. Even if you don't see the catch, you've got to see the ball hit the ground with replay available. Mistakes happen.

    the reason the umpire would have missed this is because the fielders glove is actually white, in MLB no player can use a white glove but here that only applies to the pitcher, its harder to track a ball being caught when both the ball and glove are white

    I agree with the ruling after the fact. You can't blame the runner for the ump making the wrong signal. I get that the manager is just arguing for his team and that's how baseball is but that was a completely reasonable ruling.

  • @jturie

    Vaguely recall some rule about umpires cannot put a runner in jeopardy with any call. For example, pickoff attempt where ump calls runner out, runner steps off, ump realizes player dropped the ball and changes call to safe. Again, vague memory, and might be completely wrong. In any event, brutally bad and lazy call by that umpire.

    Umps got this one right. Watching it live the first time, I didn't think the outfielder made the catch. Understandable mistake, nicely corrected by replay. The Ole Miss manager shouldn't be upset. Maybe replay has spoiled these outfielders. In the old days he might have raised his glove for a second to show that he actually caught it on the fly.
