The reason the boats are so close, the harbour entrance is very very shallow, and the deepest bit is right up against the pier. On big tides at low water you can see the bottom it is that shallow.
If you fish the right side of the end of the pier it is a sandy bed shouldn’t get snagged,anywhere else off the end is rough ground okay for top water lures for bass,or you can fish the beach behind between the two rock structures for flatties&bass 👍🏼
In all the years I've been fishing, I've never ever seen anyone fishing Berwick-upon-Tweed pier, I tried once off the bend further up around 2015, was snag heavy and not one bite, I've heard the other side at Spittal beach is better but have never tried it.
It was a learning curve for us first visit there hence why we moved to amble there is a comment on this video apparently it’s canny for mackerel and while I was there I was told people fish of the left side 🎣🎣

Haven't fished Amble since I was a kid but I remember getting some belta flatties up there.

Next time you go up to amble fish the north pier much better and not as much trouble with the boats comming in to close
