- Stock short alnico V in a Gibson Burstbucker '61 bridge humbucker is replaced with a Throbak short alnico II magnet.
This is the first test. Further adjustments and testing with other amps will be needed to see if this is a keeper. Tell me what you think in the Comments.

Definitely more musical with the A2 change. .." The SHRILL is gone "
Nice. Still clear, but a little smoother.
It sounds more friendly, no doubt
Adjusting those pole pieces downwards help which I’m sure you already know
Yeah, I was trying to offset the pickup angle, which wanted to be parallel to the body, not the strings.
It's the cavity route - it's slightly too narrow, so the pickup can't tilt with the ring.
For now I have a bit of foam on the bridge side, forcing a bit of the proper angle. Soon I'm going to undercut the route on the bridge side so the wood doesn't hit the pickup, allowing a better angle.
Haha, I ended up putting A5 short mags in my SG to get the right sound out of it for me anyway. Your guitar seems natively much brighter than mine, I can hear why you decided to try A2.
Great video!! Please use the SG for more experimentation like this :) that's why it's for.
Wow, that is a very noticeable improvement. Its a shame we have to do the job that the manufacturer should be doing for the price we pay for their instruments.
A2 for the win!
Also just e/q your amplifier settings too.
A2 all the way.
The alnico 2 did it !
Softer highs.
Well you could have just added a .47 capacitor ,and rolled off some highs for the same sound as the Alnico II, but l know buying, and trying something new comforts us ...
Here's some words for you to consider: "If a fool can hold his tongue, even he can pass for wise, and pass for clever if he keeps his lips shut tight." As it happens, changing the magnets does change the frequency response of a pickup differently than changing the capacitance. I suspect that Lyle-given his day job-is probably aware of the effect of both. Incidentally, if I've been too polite(or you're too thick to recognize contempt), feel free to offer your unreflected opinions to the world.
Incidentally, capacitors must still be purchased... also its not the same effect on tone. The magnet change alters the inductance of the pickup, and also the entire magnetic field. Can your cap swap do this? Cap swaps also alter the tone control roll-off. Will a magnet change do this?
How is that any less effort?
Fuller fatter A2s need to stay in that bright guitar….
I agree:
