I worked with Russ in the late 90s. He added a great hook to a song of mine and we recorded it together in his studio. An amazing experience. Russ is an incredibly talented, likeable guy, no ego and really sweet-natured person. I was an even bigger fan after spending a few days with him.
Thanks so much for this deep interview. I've been a big Russ Ballard fan since seeing Argent back in the 70's and always loved his work and especially his vocals. I highly recommend his Winning album.
This is such a great podcast with an uplifting and inspiring message. For years, I kept seeing the name "Russ Ballard" on song credits and kept wondering "who is this guy? he writes amazing song" and yet never made the connection to the singer/guitarist in Argent. I started listening to the reformed Zombies after seeing them as SXSW and that leads to Russ Ballard of course. I had no idea about his life, but this is an amazing and cool story. What a guy - positive, optimistic, and like every truly great person I've met or observed, virtually egoless because they really don't care what others think of them, they're too busy doing what they do and enjoying the trip. Russ Ballard? I'm a fan.
I will always love "Voices". It is so timeless, so modern, yet it was so right for the 1980s. It was featured during the cold open of an early Miami Vice episode, played over Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas speedboating their way through the choppy ocean waters all the way to the Bahamas to take down the evil druglord Calderon, interspersed with scene flashbacks of previous episodes that lead up to the reason for their traveling to the Bahamas. The song, to me, was the perfect fit for that particular segment.
I think I remember Chas and Dave. And I definitely remember Pop Quiz, only Mike Read was the host at the time I watched it. Craig, I take it your wife is from England?
I'm pretty disciplined, so I literally just stopped eating meat. And as a guy who works out, I ate meat and eggs a LOT - like 2-3 times a day. BUT... my approach to it made it very easy. My thoughts were, "Let me give this a try and see how it goes." So in my mind this was (and still is) "Just a trial, just an experiment." I find that "trying" things is a lot easier and far less pressure than "I MUST DO THIS." Hope this helps!

Say, Craig, how did you make the transition to being a pescatarian?
