    Of all the titles I could be remembered by, "Interesting" would have to be a top pick. And I love all things back story and dot-connecting, so these vids are helpful. Thanks for not forcing connections and just sharing the info.

      Absolutely. That guy from Dos Equis has thrived with that title as well.
      I really appreciate the last part of your comment, and it makes me think you're tracking especially well with what I'm going for here. Thanks for mentioning that Meg.

      No prob, Matt. It's great to have voices informing folks without shouting at us what we have to believe and do to be decent humans. And it's good to have voices prodding us to think outside of our comfort zone now and then. I think you're doing well at both.

      Don't tell Matt I said this (I'm trying to keep his self esteem to a minimum), but you should scroll through some of the recent videos when you get a chance. Its good stuff, I promise. Not that you should trust me. I'm just Matt's mom using a fake account. I figured "Andy Jones" is an inconspicuous generic name to use. Glad you're here!

    Before now, the name Drusilla only made me think of a crazy vampire from Buffy the vampire slayer... now, a vampire AND the Bible. Awesome! Thanks for the video on her, she really is an interesting (and most likely very pretty) lady.

      Thanks Dale. This is one of those stories that's super interesting, but if you gave it the attention it deserves in church, there would be many who (wrongly in my humble opinion) would feel like it's not applicable or to the point enough. I get why pastors need to take that into account, and that's why it's fun to get to take some time on this off-the-beaten-path stuff here.

    Mind blown! Pompeii!? As always, great summary. Just finished the Acts 24 vid and was wondering about what he mentioned concerning their shared beliefs in "the resurrection of the righteous and the wicked." What was the Jewish belief that he was referring to that his accusers also believed?
    Found your channel a while ago after seeing you on Destin's Patreon page (Skepticon pic), but never commented till now. Actually this is my first comment on UA-cam at all so you pushed me into the mud pit. :)

    Wow this is great, thanks for the video. I've read the New Testament numerous times and never really payed much attention to Drusilla, who would of thought there's so much to her. I always thought Drusilla was just Cinderella's evil sister Ha

    • @MattWhitmanTMBH
      @MattWhitmanTMBH  7 років тому

      Thanks for clarifying. I've been wondering for about a year now if you might be my mom.
      I know the details make history overwhelming, but I'm hoping stuff like this will gradually help make it easier to keep it all straight and get more out of history and the Bible.

    • @610garage
      @610garage 7 років тому

      Rest assured, that I am not your mom. Or am I just saying that to help your selfastine. Hmmm. LOL But seriously, this stuff helps out alot. I think the bible, and history in general is all about context. But context never seems to be taught, with the bible or history.
      Also, the pics help out alot with names and people. If you could draw history, I would probably like it alot better. :)

    • @MattWhitmanTMBH
      @MattWhitmanTMBH  7 років тому

      A lot of these characters don't come with a historical depiction, so I hope that using something funny or memorable can at least provide an image to attach to the person or place to make it stick a little better.

    • @610garage
      @610garage 7 років тому

      Sometimes they help more. With me, it's like a reference number. I visualize the picture, then I remember the information tied to it. The wackier/funnier the pic, the more memorable it is. :)

    We can still see an image of Drusilla's Azizus. We know it as The Shroud of Turin. And his real story is the origin for the NT.

  • @gabrielallis7859
    @gabrielallis7859 5 років тому

    Fascinating. You are protestant, correct? You relied pretty heavily on outside sources for this story. I probably do not have an adequit understanding of the doctrine of sola scriptora, but doesn't that mean that you rely on the Bible exclusively for Religious truth? Correct me if I am wrong

    • @jenniferlawrence1372
      @jenniferlawrence1372 5 років тому

      There was no religious truth presented in this video. This is just a short history vignette of a person merely mentioned in the New Testament, presented for interest.

    Drusilla was not a Jewess and the third wife of Felix. Though Felix was the most powerful man in the country and was going to decide Paul’s case, Paul did not hesitate to tell him about the Lord Jesus Christ.

    Abuse of the Virgin Daughters of the King
    But when it was known that Agrippa had departed this life, the inhabitants of Caesarea and of Sebaste…acted the part of the bitterest enemies; for they cast such reproaches upon the deceased as are not fit to be spoken of: and so many of them as were then soldiers, which were a great number, went into his house, and hastily carried off the statues of this king’s daughters, and…carried them into the brothel-houses, and…set them on the tops of those houses (and) they abused them to the utmost of their power, and did such things to them as are too indecent to be related. Antiquities of the Jews XIX.IX.1
    One is tempted to compare this abuse with the “abuse of the virgins,” Mariamne III and Herodias, instigated by Pheroras’ wife who was backed by that “certain sect of Pharisees who greatly opposed kings.” Some scholars feel that it was the girls themselves put on the roof of a brothel as images were forbidden by Mosaic Law. Either way, it was a head-on collision between conservative ideals for women vs. the role that royal women were expected to actually play in the real political world.
