@@MrfnordTim or it could be the author, being a scientist, read the same authors my adoptive father read (my da being an engineer before he passed).
Heavy on the world building, where the world and the plot drove the story vs the characters. And the world would have thorough detail.
The authors also had a trend where you could introduce one thing like this kiln'ing process, and then try to spiral out all of the impacts that could result and make the world seem more lived in and organic.

Most noir authors imply that what your reading is the main character narrating events that have already happened (like in a journal or case file) so it's not that they don't have a logically sound reason for the narration it's that he just tells you exactly what it is.

When I first heard "Ditto" I first thought of pokemon... Then I found out that ditto is an actual word on the english language... The more you know I guess. (I'm not a native english speaker.)

So first of all, it was Brin's idea to hand The Postman to Costner (who not only played the lead role but also directed and produced the film). Second, from what I know of Brin, he's pretty far right politically and probably liked the film just fine.
I'll have to look for the "Lost in Adaptation" episode after this.
Also, I didn't know that about Brin's politics. I didn't get that from reading _The Postman_ but maybe that's just my filter.
(I was lucky enough to have read it in its original form, a two-parter in _Asimov's_ .)
@@dwc1964 I didn't get that from the movie either. But when I watched The Postman I was still pretty young and that was a long time ago. I may have missed some stuff.

Every time I see a world like this my number one thought is "why do they have to feel pain?" like just don't give the human copies that aren't treated as humans and dissolve in a day pain sensors. why do they need pain sensors. its just mean at this point. they don't have functional organs, why do they need to feel pain?
Pain( and the fear of pain) also heavily shapes the way we act and react to things- a ditto without pain might end up being too careless/ not be able to tell when it has been wounded/needs to retreat to be useful. After all, you want a functional copy of yourself, not a weird zombie.
@@samiraansari5686 then give them dulled pain sensors, or the ability to feel pressure and heat but not pain. There's real people who don't have the ability to feel pain, and they aren't weird zombies they're just people who don't get pain signals. I just feel like they should at least have the ability to NOT give them pain signals, especially in a society where seriously hurting a ditto only gets you a slap on the wrist while the original person then has to reabsorb those potentially traumatizing memories
@@sassycassyg Yes, there are, but those people )especially as children) often end up injured and have to be find other methods to avoid damage.
@@samiraansari5686 Yes, but they have already learned these things because they are copies of people. Like a person doesn’t need to feel pain repeatedly to avoid something the dittos avoiding sth harmful would also just be an instinct.
They can outlive the originals - so we're back into book version "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" then.
I can see watching your latest reviews of things you actually like is going to get expensive. I've already bought Raybearer, and now I've picked up this one. Oddly, neither "50 Shades of Grey" or "Twilight" holds the same appeal.

These "ditto" golems sound remarkably like the toon copies that appeared in the original novel version of Who Censored Roger Rabbit? They even fall apart in roughly the same way.
Indeed, although the autonomy/thoughts/rights or lack thereof of the doubles in Who Censored Roger Rabbit? are never really touched upon. It's actually kind of odd that this concept isn't more widespread in speculative fiction: it's interesting, and there are clearly more angles to be explored.

Oh! David Brin was a big deal in my house when I was a teenager! Sadly I wasn't reading many books myself at the time, but I remember lively conversations at the dinner table between my siblings and my parents about Uplift and Kiln people. Those were good times. :)

I appreciated the book being described as "chonky". And absolutely lost it during the filk of Dreidel, Dreidel, Dreidel that started playing during the end credits while I was writing this comment.
Every time you swear, I am reminded of how much I enjoy the sound of you swearing. Exceedingly pleasant.
The plot vaguely reminds me of The Who Censored Roger Rabbit plot with the sentient clones with time limits.

The book was a great story, a little dated now, that is actually applicable in many ways to what has happened over the last year. What we actually got though is a film that I would really hate to have included in even the 'in name only' category.
@@jimcalhoun361 It was extremely timely in the '80s, felt really dated in the '90s and '00s, but has kinda come back around in some very unsettling ways.

Love the concept of clones being used in a detective story, putting sci-fi ideas within a procedural is my jam. This goes to my to-be-read pile. As always thanks Dom for a great recommendations :)
I always say that I need two of me, and this is kind of the exact thing i was thinking of. 4 of me to go out and do things, all return to one location and join back together at the end of the night. If only it were reality. I could be doing 3 jobs to earn more moony and one to organize and clean/make crafts for selling. alas, I am but only me.

This was a fun one. I thought it was the last non-licensed novel he'd written to date, but apparently he's written a couple other stand-alone novels this century. Still no new Uplift novel, though. :-(

Man, if dittos take comfort in returning to their master copy's consciousness, I feel sorry for the ones cloned to handle the original's affairs because they're dying; they are created to outlive their template.

I take these kinds of books and stories as evidence that every story has NOT, in fact, been told. That even a story that follows a certain number of tropes or cliches can still be a unique experience.
Just wanted to tell the algorithm that I’m really enjoying these “books Dom actually likes” videos.
I've never been so confused by the plot of a book and I'm totally here for it.
This book would make a super interesting idea for a video game with a mystery and puzzle solving elements. Each ditto you use has a limited time to uncover bits and you have to either get it back to base or retrieve the black box to progress. Different varieties of clone could access areas encouraging you to use each one or level up skills to use better clones. I'd play that kind of game happily.

One question I'm always left with when it comes to "making clones of myself to do things I don't want to do" plots: If the clone is of _you,_ with your same mind and thought processes and everything, and you don't want to do the task... what happens if the clone _also_ doesn't want to do it?
Haven't read this one but have liked some of Brin's other stuff so might have to check this out.

I'd love to see Dominic review the Crazy Rich Asians trilogy. I know it's a longshot away but I find the characters embedded in the "world of the rich" and the nostalgic elements of Asian culture very intriguing.
I love everything about The Dom reviews, though the kitty outtakes might be my favorites.

I have to admit I would jump on this in a second to help me finish my coursework. I could even imagine sending a clone to a different class that takes place at the same time and taking notes on the lecture.

Kiln People sounded right up my alley and so far I'm really enjoying it. I can't resist sci-fi with an interesting world.
This is giving me flashbacks to my vocaloid days and I swear there is a song about something like this, except the clones don't disappear. Basically about a girl who clones herself because she's lazy, except since her clothes do all her learning and work, they become "better" than her and the question at the end is "which one of us is fake?"
Fascinating! Another one to add to the ever-expanding To Read list.

I am really glad you are doing these reviews. Once I am free from college reading, I will just take these videos and read the books one by one. And until that happens, I get to listen to someone talking about a thing they enjoyed and that is always really enjyoable.
I somehow got my hands on one of Brin's novels a few years back (Sundiver), and I absolutely adored the way he wrote. I managed to get my hands on a copy of The Postman recently, I'll add this one to my list to look for in bookstores
"Purple Wage" for UI/Basic income supplement seems to have been coined by Phillip Jose Farmer in his 1967 _Riders of the Purple Wage_ primarily so he could use the term in that title.
You should do more of the books you enjoy yourself. That enthusiasm shines through, and makes for a much more pleasant viewing experience.
