How nice of you to say that poowg and glad you enjoyed. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Looks like Iron Senergy spent a bunch of money on track work over the 2 week vacation! Again I love that that they are so invested into keeping your operation going there and doing the maintenance, upgrades, etc. Even sprung for knocking the muck off of my favorite locomotives! Hope you had a most excellent vacation, Dave! I can count on 1 hand the number of legitimate 2 week vacations i've had. I've got almost 6 weeks worth of PTO built up. I just don't have anywhere to go or more importantly, anybody to go with anymore. sigh.
How nice of you to say that Shane and glad you enjoyed. Yes we are fortunate they are spending money on our track safety, totally unlike the company we used to have. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Nice to hear that work on the tracks and bridges got completed. Agin thanks Dave for all your enlightening content about railroading. I never realized how much work went into maintaining the tracks. It seem to me that ever time I cross or ride by tracks I never see anyone working on them, and I never realized importance of track maintenance.
Thank you for the nice comment Rik. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes to keep trains running. So I make these videos to expand railroading knowledge about all that. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Another very cool video dave and we enjoyed watching once again. Thanks again for joining us in our premiere this evening. Have a wonderful rest of your weekend.(Steve)
How nice of you to say that Steve and glad you enjoyed. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
You really work for a good company, that does what needs to be done. It doesn't pay to let things slide until you reach the point where you can't catch up anymore.
Always a good feeling coming back from vacation to improvements instead of problems to deal with. Cool shot of #22 coming out of the loading area. It's nice to see the company investing in the improvement and overall safety of the railroad.
Your right about that Ric, got some good things done and it is great to have a company spending money on track safety improvements. Thank you for taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day my friend.
The manganese insert casting for the frog at 15:24 & 15:50 is broken at the rail joints off the heel of the frog. The wedge-shaped tang on the heel end of the frog should be a part of the casting. Those 3 long frog bolts go through everything to hold it all together.
Very observant Roy and you are right. And in one of the next few videos coming out on why we tamp track you will find out why it broke. I've been asking and pleading to get that turn out cribbed out to get rid of the mud and it didn't get done. When they put the new timbers in they put half mud ballast back. sigh..... Very much appreciate your watching and writing in my friend and may you have a very good day.
@@ccrx6700 Half mud ballast? Haha, when the ballast is out, it can't be that hard to just wash it, then put it back after it's cleaned. Just takes a pinch of elbow grease and a lot of water :)
Your right about that, it was good they got all that done Mojo, even without me.... :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Yes and when they used cedar wood for the poles only the butt ends would get creosoted. My dad was a lineman for the power company and he climbed a lot of those line poles that were creosoted the whole way up Craig. They always carried creosote burn kits in their trucks. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Seems all wood utility poles are now being replaced by concrete poles. Every time they replace a wood pole in my area now, it gets a concrete pole in its place now. Sure miss the smell of creosote when they'd replace an old wood pole with a new one. That creosote smell is rapidly disappearing now. Even a lot of railroads are starting to replace wooden ties(sleepers) with concrete ties(sleepers) now. So even the smell of creosote at the railroad tracks is starting to disappear. Just not as fast as the wooden poles that are street side.
Your sure right about that Steve, a huge difference from the last company we had here. I do give a big salute to Iron Senergy for spending so much money on track safety. Appreciate the very nice comment my friend.
I'm glad your road got all of that new work done, and it is nice to see all of those fresh new timbers and ties installed. I do like the smell of creosoted timbers and ties too. Thanks, Dave! 🤠👍
You and me both Scotty, and they got it done without me there.... LOL Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Appreciate the nice comment Michael. Yes it was good to see a lot got done, even with out me... :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
I did not know that Scott, but I have seen videos of the PRR and their drive thru loco wash. When they used to run passenger trains they wanted to put forth a great public image so people would ride their trains, thus washing the locos. The coal in our cars doesn't seem to car whether the locos are clean or not tho.... LOL Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Yep, we have a drive through train wash in Sanford, Florida. I don't know how often it gets used, but seemed to be very rarely. When CSX owned the tracks they occasionally ran their locomotives through it, I think Amtrak's Auto Train utilizes it, as well as the regular Amtrak Passenger Trains. And I would guess that SunRail Passenger service uses it. I only caught a CSX Local utilizing it once, washed the entire train, was cool to watch, but because of where it's located, it's difficult to get a good video of a train using it. Commercial Buildings, houses and trees obscure the view.
Nice job my friend, always a good day when a new video comes out. And the smell of creosote gives me a headache, that's terrible when your a track guy like us 😂
Thank you for the nice comment Michael. But here I thought you were one of those tough guy railroaders who put a teaspoon of creosote mixed with hydraulic oil in his coffee every morning ..... :-) Appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

Some great work done there Dave with high quality as well. I always enjoyed working the two weeks shutdown as with no coaling and no trains we could get stuck in. Thanks for sharing

Good morning Dave. Lots of needed work done it looks like. When I saw the new ties I could almost smell the creosote. I spent a bit of my time growing up painting fence posts to keep the horse from chewing on them. Have a great day my friend.

Dave.. Did you ever see any "date nails" in old RR ties? These are common to find in the abandoned tracks here in eastern Maine. If you don't have any I can send you a few as I scavenge them to put in Geocaches I find as my unique item..
We have never used date nails here Jon but yes I do know what they are. Appreciate the kind offer of sending some. Thank you for the nice comment Daniel, we are fortunate they spent so much money again to keep our track safe so trains can run safely. Really appreciate your visiting with us tonight and may you have a very good day my friend.
Your right about that Clarence. They spent a lot of money this past year getting the mechanical parts running and working well, that's far more important than the paint. But I figure that at some point here in the future it will get painted. Iron Senergy seems to be a company that wants to be proud of how their facilities and equipment looks. But also remember we are in a depressed coal market all over and there is only so much money to spend for the time being and we are not like a class 1 RR who has billion dollar budgets. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

Excellent work all round Dave. Must be so pleasing to see those problem areas looking so much better! It certainly helps us understand how much work must be required to maintain a major railroad! Keep them rolling my friend and stay safe out there!
Thanks for the kind words Richard. Yes it was good to get all this done and they did it without me being there! :-) Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
The coal market goes in cycles, we are currently in a depressed coal market. AAR tracks 20 different commodities for all Class 1 railroads. This past week coal was down 23% from same week as last year. That is huge. Almost every week this year coal rail traffic has been down. With the projected demand for electricity fueled by the massive increase in AI, energy demands will sky rocket and let's hope coal plays a big part in providing a good hare of that energy production. We in the coal industry are encouraged by the new selection of US leaders, we shall see what the future brings. You must remember that when you work with KREOSOT, you must follow various rules in advance. Creosote: Creosote also contains benzene, phenols and cresols. It is carcinogenic and phototoxic, which means that in case of skin contact it can cause the skin to lose its ability to resist sunlight. Some of the substances in creosote are difficult to break down and can accumulate in the food chain. I have worked with creosote. I know what I'm talking about. Have a nice day
Your right Geir, it is wicked stuff, lot's of railroaders and guys who climb poles can attest to that. My dad climbed poles back when the whole pole was creosoted, they always kept a creosote burn kit in their truck. EV's have tremendous repair bills from what I hear Gino. But of course Mr. Biden says you can go all the way across the country on one tank of fuel with an EV! So with that kind of gas mileage no wonder they got popular.... LOL LOL Coal is down but coal markets over history have their ups and downs, just like most commodities do. Electric cars were invented before gas cars were but the gas cars proved their reliabilty and sale ability over them. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Appreciate your saying that Ronald and Amen to that! Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Great video, Dave. Thank you. Question: on the bridge where the deck was replaced, where the portion of the new deck is over the road and the decking is solid to protect the traffic below, it looks like every second tie extends out from the deck (on the side away from the fence). What is the purpose of that ? Thanks again , Dave. James.
That was where the road guard shields used to be bolted down to. They were big heavy sheets of steel, we did not put them back on but built a new type of road shield, you will see that in a future video James. Glad you enjoyed. Very enjoyable, Dave. I did some track & signal work for the museum for which I volunteered, so I appreciate your thorough work. I didn't see any guard rails on Bridge 9. Isn't it common practice to have guard rails on bridges?
Glad you enjoyed Kenneth. Great to hear you volunteered! Some of our bridges have the guard rails some don't. All did when the track was built but various track bosses decided they didn't want to spend the extra money to replace them when a bridge deck got replaced..... sigh. I would have put them back. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hey Dave !!! WOW !!! Great transformation of the rails for sure !!!! With todays economy ,it's good that your co. decided to have the work done as you stated, coal use in the USA is going down as everyone wants ""Going Green ""!!! The Overseas market looking better for coal as they DON"T have the same issues over there !!! Think CHINA is 1 of the last to manufacture ""STEAM LOCOS"" that use coal !! Thanks again for the videos & ""STAY SAFE""!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you for the nice comment KB. We sold some coal overseas to China and India but now the price they get for the coal there is less than what it costs to produce it. You are right about the steam locos being made in China. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Dave - the bridge you showed needs the angle iron across the top for safety reasons to provide a handhold. The wire won't do it. OSHA treats that as a handrail.
Your right, they have ordered angle iron to put on the Nolan, but as of yet it hasn't got put on. But also OSHA has no jurisdiction here FYI. Since we are a coal mine, Mine Safety Health Administration polices us. Thank you so much for watching the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Your not going to believe this KB, but the one car that dumped out, they didn't put it in the shop to find out why. Just shut the doors and kept on going. Well guess what? That car dumped out again this past weekend.... sigh. However finally they got smart and took it out. Wonders never cease do they..... :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Well, Ain't that something !!! Kinda reminds me of the ""OL"" Fram commercial --""PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME LATER "" !!! Hope they get the rest of them B/4 the whole mine ends up on the rails ??
Appreciate the nice comment John and your right a lot of good safety improvements got done. For the bridges sometimes they use a flag man on the road, sometimes a flag man on top of the bridge to stop work when a car is coming, but have never closed down a road before. Thank you so much for taking time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Thank you for sharing..do they vacum the rails of coal dust to prevent fire or explosions..the trains that run in the back of the house carry coke sometimes drop some and cause brush fires.
Since we started running coal in 1977 there has never been a coal fire on the tracks Craig. We have had several way side brush fires along the track set by hot wheel bearings and also many times by sparks from the locomotive. Thank you so much for taking time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
The locos look real nice now they are clean. I love the smell of creosote too That and steam locomotive coal smoke n hot oil would sell like crazy if you could bottle it LOL Interested to see how the crossing broke I noticed that too. EV fuel will keep your mine going a while :)
Smoke from steam locos or traction engines is the best smell Cedarcam. When I was a kid most folks heated their houses with coal and you could smell that coal smoke all winter long. Estee Lauder needs to develop a creosote scented ode de perfume... :-) With the new admin coming in for president here we should be blessed with at least 4 more years of good coal production. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Oh yea for sure it is We had a coal fire as a kid and it was missed when we moved here in our new all electric house. Looks like you are dumping the headlong dash into going away from fossil fuel, unlike here where we are still hellbent on importing fuel from thousands of miles away just so we can say we closed our mines and reduced our gas n oil production World leaders in green energy too if you can believe that.
I love your videos. I know your railroad is not connected to any other railroad. Would it be feasible to get an undercutter and screener to clean the ballast?
How nice of you to say that BiigCheeze and glad you are enjoying. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend. We have had under cutters in here in the past, that requires a good bit of down track time, plus a section crew behind to fix ties, plus a lot of ballast hauling and tamping. Undercuting is the best hing to do, but also very expensive. Last time was $40,000 just for the under cutter for 5 days. Cleaning the old ballast is not an option, throw it over the hill, it's far cheaper to buy new ballast at 18 a ton. Hi Dave, Many thanks for your time to allow us to come out and join you on track. Question, you said that power generation using coal is down to 16 ish % in 2023 compared to 54% in1990, what are the generators using instead these days, over here in the UK we've pretty well shut down all our coal generators and are using wood pellets (from the US as its environmentally friendly?) Gas and wind, topped off with solar, nuclear and hydro. Thanks again, Take care, Rgds, Peter.
Your welcome Peter. Natural gas has about a 45% share of the fuel for power generation, the rest is renewables, then nuclear has a small share. All kinds of solar farms are being developed in the US, but no one's figured out yet how to keep the sun shining 24/7 LOL Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend. This new pressure treated lumber we get for home projects is not very good as it was in the past with Creosote. We have ground contact and above ground contact pressure treated lumber. The big box stores don’t say much about it so buyer’s be careful. How is expansion controlled by welding rail? Thumbs up 👍.
Your right about the treated lumber Clarence, but there's not much else one can buy. sigh..... Expansion is controlled by anchoring the rail on welded rail. If you notice all CWR has anchors on every tie. Since we have so many joints here we really don't have to worry much about a few sticks of welded rail here. Glad you enjoyed. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend
Thank you Kelly. We had a battery powered coal car that was controlled by the locomotive, it had throttling and dynamic braking capabilities. That antenna is what sent the signal back from the loco to the car. Loco was what controlled the car. That car developed a few problems and is currently being looked at by the car techs.

We need to work on developing a scratch and smell video Dave.... give you a good winter's project to work on. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Good question Wilco Automotive. When I do track inspections then I need to see the spikes and the bolts in the joint bars, along with the tops of the ties. If ballast piles up I can't see those. Also when tamping track I need to see the tops of the ties so I know how far to advance the tamper so I don't hit the ties. Plus it looks a lot neater track when the ballast is broomed out. Another consideration is when walking track, it's much harder to walk on all that ballast than it is to walk on cleaned off ties. Dave, I thought not too long ago you said the mines output was presold for all next year. Who makes the decisions about what work gets done on the track during these shut down periods?
You are correct about the coal being pre sold shopshop. When it comes to major track work, I offer my opinions on what needs to be done, that is considered by management here, then we also have a budget we have to follow, so decision making is kind of a cooperative effort. Some of our bridges have the guard rails some don't Eric. I’m with you Dave. Love the smell of railroad ties on a hot summers day.
I love that smell of creosote. I come from a rail road family lived by the tracks and being a phone man had the creosol on the polls!
In the old days, the ties had a different scent. In those days, when you flushed, it went onto the tracks! But you young guys wouldn't know that.
Estee Lauder needs to make a creosoted ode de perfume so

A maintained railroad is a happy railroad. First rate, thanks Dave!
Yes we are fortunate they are spending money on our track
safety, totally unlike the company we used to have.
There is a lot that goes on
behind the scenes to keep trains running. So I make these
videos to expand railroading knowledge about all that. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

Glad to see your company putting back in
Very well said Ivory and you are right. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Always a good feeling coming back from vacation to improvements instead of problems to deal with. Cool shot of #22 coming out of the loading area. It's nice to see the company investing in the improvement and overall safety of the railroad.
Your right about that Ric, got some good things done and it is
great to have a company spending money on track safety
improvements. Thank you for taking the time to watch and may you

And in one of the next few videos coming out on why we tamp track you will find out why
it broke. I've been asking and pleading to get that turn out cribbed
out to get rid of the mud and it didn't get done. When they
put the new timbers in they put half mud ballast back. sigh.....
Very much appreciate your watching and writing in my friend
and may you have a very good day.
@@ccrx6700 Half mud ballast? Haha, when the ballast is out, it can't be that hard to just wash it, then put it back after it's cleaned. Just takes a pinch of elbow grease and a lot of water :)
I was going to mention that too.
@@ccrx6700 Sometimes it is something I do, notice stuff.
@brnmcc01 your right .... sigh, so you end up with a cracked frog cuz things werent done right 😭
I'll bet it was nice to come back and see everything all cleaned-up like that! Nice seeing all of those new ties and the bridge work as well 😊
Your right about that, it was good they got all that done Mojo,
even without me.... :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
I remember as a kid when a new utility pole would go up and we all would smell the creosote
Yes and when they used cedar wood for the poles only the
butt ends would get creosoted. My dad was a lineman for the
power company and he climbed a lot of those line poles that
were creosoted the whole way up Craig. They always carried
creosote burn kits in their trucks.
@HolidayDecorator they use no concrete here, its all salt treated poles, they are a puke green color
Great to see a company reinvesting into its infrastructure even during a down market. Thank you for sharing this video...
Your sure right about that Steve, a huge difference from the
last company we had here. I do give a big salute to Iron Senergy
for spending so much money on track safety. Appreciate
the very nice comment my friend.
I'm glad your road got all of that new work done, and it is nice to see all of those fresh new timbers and ties installed. I do like the smell of creosoted timbers and ties too. Thanks, Dave! 🤠👍
You and me both Scotty, and they got it done without me there.... LOL Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the
video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Nice to come back to work and see all the work what was done during your vacation. But don't worry, they still need you and your skills.
Thanks, Dave!
Appreciate the nice comment Michael. Yes it was good to see
a lot got done, even with out me... :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Nothing nicer than a clean and shiny loco. I was watching a video about Milwaukee road and back in the day they had a kind of drive thru train wash.
Yeah, back in the 70s they were clean out of Milwaukee and dirty going in. The cleaning rack was down by the 35th Street viaduct.
I did not know that Scott, but I have seen videos of the PRR and
their drive thru loco wash. When they used to run passenger
trains they wanted to put forth a great public image so people
would ride their trains, thus washing the locos. The coal in
our cars doesn't seem to car whether the locos are clean
or not tho....
But here I thought
you were one of those tough guy railroaders who put a teaspoon
of creosote mixed with hydraulic oil in his coffee every morning ..... :-) Appreciate your taking the time to watch the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

My good

Paint or not it’s a good locomotive 🚂 and does it’s job
Virginia is as I understand it down to only 8 coal fired power plants.
Your right about that Clarence. They spent a lot of money this
past year getting the mechanical parts running and working well,
that's far more important than the paint. But I figure that at
some point here in the future it will get painted. Iron Senergy
seems to be a company that wants to be proud of how
their facilities and equipment looks. But also remember we
are in a depressed coal market all over and there is only
so much money to spend for the time being and we are not like
a class 1 RR who has billion dollar budgets. Thank you
so much for taking the time to watch the video and may you have

Excellent work all round Dave. Must be so pleasing to see those problem areas looking so much better! It certainly helps us understand how much work must be required to maintain a major railroad! Keep them rolling my friend and stay safe out there!
Thanks for the kind words Richard. Yes it was good to get all
this done and they did it without me being there! :-) Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the

Coal will be making a massive comeback soon!!! Everything comes full circle!!!
The coal market goes in cycles, we are currently in a depressed
coal market. AAR tracks 20 different commodities for all Class 1 railroads. This past week coal was down 23% from same week
as last year. That is huge. Almost every week this year coal
rail traffic has been down. With the projected demand
for electricity fueled by the massive increase in AI, energy
demands will sky rocket and let's hope coal plays a big part
in providing a good hare of that energy production. We in
the coal industry are encouraged by the new selection of
US leaders, we shall see what the future brings.

Have a nice day
Your right Geir, it is wicked stuff, lot's of railroaders and guys
who climb poles can attest to that. My dad climbed poles
back when the whole pole was creosoted, they always kept

Hey Dave, glad you're using my EV Fuel tag line😂😊 Coal production down this year makes prefect sense. People have wised up that EV are not the🤑 future
EV's have tremendous repair bills from what I hear Gino. But of course Mr. Biden says you can go all the way across the country on one tank of fuel with an EV! So with that kind of gas mileage no wonder they got popular.... LOL LOL Coal is down
but coal markets over history have their ups and downs, just
like most commodities do. Electric cars were invented before
gas cars were but the gas cars proved their reliabilty and
sale ability over them. Thank you for taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.

They were big heavy sheets of steel, we did not put them back
on but built a new type of road shield, you will see that in a
future video James. Glad you enjoyed. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

Dave things will get better . New people in power if you know what I mean .
I hope your right Trevelyn, sure better what is coming that what
might have been. :-) Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
All did when
the track was built but various track bosses decided they didn't
want to spend the extra money to replace them when a bridge
deck got replaced.....
We sold some coal overseas to China and India but now the price they get for the coal
there is less than what it costs to produce it. You are right about
the steam locos being made in China. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Dave - the bridge you showed needs the angle iron across the top for safety reasons to provide a handhold. The wire won't do it. OSHA treats that as a handrail.
Your right, they have ordered angle iron to put on the Nolan,
but as of yet it hasn't got put on. But also OSHA has no
jurisdiction here FYI. Since we are a coal mine, Mine Safety
Health Administration polices us. Thank you so much for watching the video and may you have a very good day my friend.
Hey Dave !! Did they fix the cars that had bad doors that opened on the rails ???
Your not going to believe this KB, but the one car that dumped out, they didn't put it in the shop to find out why. Just shut the doors and kept on going. Well guess what? That car dumped
out again this past weekend.... sigh. However finally they got
smart and took it out. Wonders never cease do they..... :-)
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
@@ccrx6700 Remember the ""OL""FRAM Commercial ""PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME LATER ""!!! NO Laughing matter as those cars have really out lived their use !!
@@ccrx6700 Well, Ain't that something !!! Kinda reminds me of the ""OL"" Fram commercial --""PAY ME NOW OR PAY ME LATER "" !!! Hope they get the rest of them B/4 the whole mine ends up on the rails ??
@KB-gs8zi your right about that KB 🤕😪
It's definitely looking a lot better now 👍👍
When you are working on those road bridges. Do you close the road below .😯
Appreciate the nice comment John and your right a lot of
good safety improvements got done. For the bridges sometimes
they use a flag man on the road, sometimes a flag man on
top of the bridge to stop work when a car is coming, but have never closed down a road before. Thank you so much for taking time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Important to get good safety improvements.
Yes it was good to see all this get done even if I wasn't there... :-)
Thank you for sharing..do they vacum the rails of coal dust to prevent fire or explosions..the trains that run in the back of the house carry coke sometimes drop some and cause brush fires.
Since we started running coal in 1977 there has never been
a coal fire on the tracks Craig. We have had several way side brush fires along the track set by hot wheel bearings and also
many times by sparks from the locomotive.
Smoke from steam locos or traction engines is the best smell
Cedarcam. When I was a kid most folks heated their houses
with coal and you could smell that coal smoke all winter long. Estee Lauder needs to develop a creosote scented ode de perfume... :-) With the new admin coming in for president here
we should be blessed with at least 4 more years of good
coal production. Thank you so much for taking the time to
visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
@cedarcam 😊👍
We have had under cutters
in here in the past, that requires a good bit of down track time,
plus a section crew behind to fix ties, plus a lot of ballast hauling
and tamping. Undercuting is the best hing to do, but also very
expensive. Last time was $40,000 just for the under cutter
for 5 days. Cleaning the old ballast is not an option, throw it
over the hill, it's far cheaper to buy new ballast at 18 a ton.

Hi Dave,
Many thanks for your time to allow us to come out and join you on track.
Thanks again,
Take care,
Rgds,
Peter.
Your welcome Peter. Natural gas has about a 45% share
of the fuel for power generation, the rest is renewables, then
nuclear has a small share. All kinds of solar farms are being
developed in the US, but no one's figured out yet how to keep
the sun shining 24/7 LOL

This new pressure treated lumber we get for home projects is not very good as it was in the past with Creosote. We have ground contact and above ground contact pressure treated lumber. The big box stores don’t say much about it so buyer’s be careful.
How is expansion controlled by welding rail? Thumbs up 👍.
Your right about the treated lumber Clarence, but there's not
much else one can buy. sigh..... Expansion is controlled by
anchoring the rail on welded rail. If you notice all CWR has
anchors on every tie. Since we have so many joints here we
really don't have to worry much about a few sticks of welded
rail here. Glad you enjoyed. Really appreciate your taking the time to check out the video and may you have a very good day my friend
Awesome content. Dave, what is the white box and antenna on the front of the locomotive for?
Thank you Kelly. We had a battery powered coal car that was
controlled by the locomotive, it had throttling and dynamic
braking capabilities. That antenna is what sent the signal
back from the loco to the car. Loco was what controlled the
car. That car developed a few problems and is currently
being looked at by the car techs.
@ccrx6700 Thanks, Dave. That's really cool !

Those plates at the switch are commonly called slide plates

The guys who run the railroad on Jason asselins channel should really check this channel to see how to run a railroad with all those derailments lol

We need to work on developing a scratch and smell video Dave....
give you a good winter's project to work on. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
Why do you need the ballast off the top of the ties?
Good question Wilco Automotive. When I do track inspections
then I need to see the spikes and the bolts in the joint bars,
along with the tops of the ties. If ballast piles up I can't see
those. Also when tamping track I need to see the tops of the ties
so I know how far to advance the tamper so I don't hit the ties.
Plus it looks a lot neater track when the ballast is broomed out.
Another consideration is when walking track, it's much harder
to walk on all that ballast than it is to walk on cleaned off ties.

so about how long will the new bridge ties last you think? Since they don't sit in wet ballast?
thanks again Dave.
Average life for a bridge timber in tangent track is 20 or so years

or so years. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

Dave, I thought not too long ago you said the mines output was presold for all next year. Who makes the decisions about what work gets done on the track during these shut down periods?
You are correct about the coal being pre sold shopshop. When it
comes to major track work, I offer my opinions on what needs
to be done, that is considered by management here, then we also have a budget we have to follow, so decision making is kind of a cooperative effort. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.

How would you turn a locomotive if you had to?
The only way we can do it is to get Hulcher or Corman in here
with their side booms to turn them Twiggs. Huge expense so we don't do it. Thank you so much for taking the time to visit with us and may you have a very good day my friend.
