In more recent times I think Starry Eyes did a better job of the 'deal with the devil' story.

Seeing this reminds me of A Lonely Place to Die, which I saw around the same time and loved it.

With you in this one boys... actually I didn't like this film AT ALL- thought it was pretty bad. I remember it played FrightFest before it was released, and the guy who runs FF, Alan Jones?.. , was repping for it pretty hard and saying how great and special it was- but maaan I found it hard to get through- so on the nose with its messages and metaphors, the gang / crime stuff was so unrealistic, the acting was cheesy as hell , especially from Noel Clarke, the ending was dumb and obvious and a let down... what happened to Ridley in those 14 years? His older movies are interesting and pretty good- maybe years of writing kids books fucked up his storytelling skills when writing for older audiences who knows lol

I loved this movie. The main character basically lost the plot once his father died. It is said in the movie that the father was the one who made sense of the world for him.
Probably his issues were bigger than just a birthmark. Probably some form of autism might have been involved too. Or maybe just the scars from a life of shame and rejection. When the movie starts, he's just lost the main person in his life and he can't make sense of the world anymore. He doesn't know how to deal with romantic relationships or even friendships. The situation around him worsens, with crime going wild and getting closer to his family.
Identifying those gang boys as monster is the beginning of his escape into an alternate reality. Maybe it's a leftover from his father's way of dealing with his needs. His father might have been giving him easier-to-digest explanations for anything happening around him. During the news broadcast scene, reality becomes evan harder for him to cope with, so the phone call arrives: that's when he decides to make the ultimate switch into the alternate reality.
I think it's a movie about struggling to cope with life, when you have any type of imvalidating issues, either mental or physical.
I am not an expert watcher, but I've seen my fair share of movies. I like those movies that stay in your mind for a while. Probably I was helped by the extras present on the dvd.
I would watch it again, honestly.

Yes, it’s kind of a Faustian tale... I thought about „Heart of Stone“, a German Fairytale.

on the "silencer" part. They are suppressors, they dont make the weapon sound all thwip thwip thwip. More like someone slamming a door hard. Also, they do not last very long, they wear out quickly. So, I would assume, he was using it for target practice to not bring attention to himself, and then he could no longer use it as it had worn out and was no longer effective.
