Most excellent, you're giving a glimpse of what other people will never see. Reading through the comments, why no safety gear....c'mon....ruining it for others, please. Just keep going, you're doing a wonderful thing. The scenery, an element of danger/excitement on the rails....and a California Condor very few people will see in the wild. Well done.

@@DaveFromBoca-nc3ob I worked for the BN Railroad for 18 years and we had speeders a lot like this. There was no safety gear other than a radio to talk to the dispatcher. Our speeders had an 18 h.p. Onan engine with 2 speeds forward and two speeds going the other way going about 50mph. The only thing I was concerned with here was the running the road crossings and not slowing down to the packed rail flanges. I think I'd have slowed down a little so that if I stopped on a dime I wouldn't have to give them 5 cents change with my health.

I did this back in the 70s. Your cart resembles ours quite a bit. I used 8 inch castor wheels that have rubber on them. The backing plate was made from Lexan and was quiet and lasted forever. The rubber on the wheels and the lexan backing plate made the whole ride smoother and quieter. We could ride all the way up almost to the top of Mt Jacumba. The final stopping point was a completely blocked tunnel. We were able to ride even where the tressels were gone and the track and ties were still hanging there. We called one of them the whopptido. You suddenly dropped down into the low hanging tracks and back up the other side. It was scary. I have photos if you would like to see.

I ran a hand car. ONCE! It is very hard to do. The max is about 10MPH. Going up hills would give you a heart attack even with 4 people doing the pumping. Don't believe anything you see in the movies, especially railroad. That's why motorcars were invented to do away with the hand cars

Archie, you are incredible. I would love to have you as a neighbor! I am a senior citizen who appreciates quality videos and super views of the trip. I have watched many RR cart videos, and I must say yours is the best! The camera shots are superb, the overall trip is spectacular, and you take us on the scariest rides! Also like where in some videos you show google maps of your ride. Then swapping from phone camera to video camera is exceptional videography! I love to hear you laugh as your cart hits something and jolts! That cart of yours must do at least 35mph. And you run thru those RR track bushes like nothing! You have some large kohonas! What scares me is someday behind that large track bush is a small boulder and -- wham-o -- you are done! Keep up the excellent videos and I truly enjoy you channel.

Great footage. After watching for a bit it's difficult to know what year it is. It's like a time machine. Everyone who has only heard of California thinks of it as an overcrowded place with only cars and freeways. Most have no idea that most of the state looks like this. Except for those beautiful redwoods. There are no railroads through them. I would love to do this once, maybe twice if I live long enough. I've got hurry. I'm already 80.

Didn't want to roll all the way in to the old CZRY depot in Jacumba? 🤓 I wonder if those old Spirit of Washington F-units are still there.
It's really a damn shame the PSRM has all this track they could run trains on out of Campo but they apparently can never get enough money and resources to get that one bridge just north of the museum safe for use. Imagine getting to ride some of their vintage rolling stock from there to Jacumba and back!

A few things. Nice cart. Great scenery. Not everyone can do this. Fact is, very few people could do this. It would be great if this could serve you in a way other than entertainment. Ya know, go to town and shop, etc. Your own personal highway. Too cool. If it could get you to town and back I'd use it twice a week. For entertainment I'd do this once a year, maybe twice. How would I haul it? Where would I store it? etc.

What a great stretch of track, I hope there aren't too many obstructions to make you stop. It's time for an even better view, I would mount the seats at least 4feet off the deck, let you see over the scrub and not catch any branches in the face. It's all about the view!!

@@archiemorenoHello, dear author of this channel, how many abandoned sections of the railway are there?

  • @meinder2

I think that this trip is one of the really nice ones, as there are many stones and a lot of bush and many small hills and mountains that you drive through, which the train company has blown up when they make the tracks, very nice.
Just a bit of a pity that it is not recorded in 1440p or 4k for better quality. But it still looks good. And the sounds are amazing to listen to. What's with the water bottles on the track??? is it for ghosts or where someone had died, or is it booze. I don't know. !!???

seen a few now and starting to think maybe some sort of little razor sharp plows on each rail before the lead wheel to cut down the weeds and clear some of the sand that blows onto the track

Your videos are hilariously fun to watch. Keep em coming! Wish I had a large network of abandoned rails near me, I'd consider my own build.
Please be careful with your speed on mountain passes. It makes me a little nervous, unless you've ridden those rails before and know the condition. Don't want derailment in a dangerous spot.
    Safe travels!!!

Jeff, I went to school with a kid from Truesdale Iowa named Kenny Schossow. Kenny took me for a ride in his Vega, it's wheelbase was the same width as the tracks. Just let out about half the air out of the tires.
