- Katherine Jenkins performing Habanera
Wikipedia:
"Katherine Jenkins, OBE (born 29 June 1980) is a Welsh lyric mezzo-soprano. She is a popular classical-crossover singer who performs across a spectrum of operatic arias, popular songs, musical theatre and hymns.
After winning singing competitions in her youth, Jenkins studied at the Royal Academy of Music, modelled and taught voice. She came to wide public attention in 2003 when she sang at Westminster Cathedral in honour of Pope John Paul II's silver jubilee. Since 2004, she has released numerous albums that have performed well on British and foreign charts. In both 2005 and 2006, her albums received Classic Brit Awards as Album of the Year. She has also been seen widely in concert, including concerts for British troops in Iraq and Afghanistan; she has also sung at sporting events, on television shows and in support of many charities. In Spring 2012, she competed on the US television show Dancing with the Stars, finishing in second place, behind NFL Super Bowl champion Donald Driver."

Habanera
"Habanera is the popular name for the aria "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" (Love is a rebellious bird) from Georges Bizet's 1875 opera Carmen. It is the entrance aria of the title character, a mezzo-soprano role, in scene 5 of the first act. The vocal range covers D4 to F♯5 with a tessitura from D4 to D5."

Ms. Jenkins, I loved your
emotions. Your voice is
outstanding. Clearly, a winner.
She's so hugely talented. You can see her talent practically bursting at the seams and threatening to spill out all over the stage!
All the "real opera fans" coming here to bash this girl is the reason opera can't seem to take hold in mainstream popular culture. Elitism and exclusivity just makes if harder for the younger generations to acquire a taste for classical music and opera. Speaking personally, no I wouldn't listen to this woman's rendition of L'amour if I had the choice but there is obviously something about her that the public finds accessible and I see nothing wrong with that. No one should have to feel judged because of their taste and classic crossover only help to popularize opera in all it's interpretations in the long run.
It's really simple if you choose to sing a song any song sing it well and don't do a substandard version where you insult music listeners with crap. The reason she's getting some attention is because she is obviously very attractive and image is more important than substance now a days.
Elitism, classic crossover being good, opera dying ...
All besides the point - this is not opera/classical singing. If someone likes it, enjoy, . Some people go to McDonalds for a gastro treat ..
She is beautiful, magical, amazing, ... She's perfect!
She have great voice! Her voice have power!
She's the best when it comes to Habanera. And she's so beautiful too!
To put it bluntly, Katherine is NOT an opera singer and does not claim to be one! She is a classical singer. CLASSICAL!!!!!
The bird you thought you had caughtbeat its wings and flew away ...
love stays away, you wait and wait;
when least expected, there it is!
All around you, swift, so swift,
it comes, it goes, and then returns ...
you think you hold it fast, it flees
you think you're free, it holds you fast.
Love! Love! Love! Love!
Love is a gypsy's child,
it has never, ever, known a law;
love me not, then I love you;
if I love you, you'd best beware!
So many people on here are far too negative! When this was recorded she was just at the beginning of her career and yet she's still amazing. So it may not be perfect for you opera 'critics' out there, but if people don't want to enjoy her talent then don't watch!
I'm not an opera lover, but this is one of those songs that I enjoy hearing. Her voice is good although she seemed a little tense to me,but great job overall.
Great voice. Thnx katherine for taking your time to sing for our troops!
Nice performance, her singing is a little breathy though.
ua-cam.com/video/EseMHr6VEM0/v-deo.html it's meant to be that way
Well said. You too the words right out of my mouth. I agree with you 100%
@desouzasantos1949 I feel like these mics might be a touch more sensitive then what Callas had, not to be argumentative.
from one artist to another, you are amazing very lovely song!
It is ok, but Angela Gheorghiu is the best.
Holy lord, she's one of the best singers in the world!! It's a matter of her interpretation of the music I believe.... She is a star, have sung her whole life. Only real masters could judge her.
I still prefer the muppet version
A dumb asshole like you would prefer the Muppet version
Depends on what you compare it to. If you come from pop world and aren't very familiar with opera, it'll probably sound fantastic to you. If you come from opera world you expect a lot more. Just like with any piece not just opera: if you know more about the genre, what the piece is about, heard many performances of it you have different expectations than someone new to the genre.
Aw man, She got a good accent while singing ! I saw Carmen at the Cork opera house and as a French native, I felt insulted how crappy the lyrics were sung >
I LOVE THE WAY SHE BREATHES !!!!!!!!! INTERESTING : PEOPLE WHO DO NOT UNDERSTAND NOTHING ABOUT MUSIC JUDGING!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHE IS THE BEST OF ALL!!!!!!!!!
I don't mean to sound like a hater, but the way she pronounces 'tu' bothers me
Oh I know! Spoiled the whole thing for me. Fancy a Welsh girl not being able to pronounce the French word "tu" to the satisfaction of (possibly) only one perfectionist. Don't be silly!
Lesley Garret is WONDERFUL, I LOVE HER, I met her once and she’s just so authentic and a fabulous performer and singer and entertainer.
I think she did a great job! To get up there and sing one of the hardest songs ever knowing that everyone is expecting the voice of God to come out of you is beyond what most any of us could ever accomplish.
best version I've heard sung out of any. her voice can actually carry
I don't mean to be any sort of way, but no her voice cannot carry. She is using a microphone. A vast majority of this aria was unsupported and would likely not be heard, save the high note, without the mic!
Markus E. I'm sorry, but no.. the best?
Then why is she using a microphone?
@@golden-63 How can you record without microphones 😅🤣😂
@@johnojvind7641 I'm not talking about microphones for recording.
Was für ein schönes Ding! Sie sind großartig !
she's hiding the sound in her throat. she's not opened. very amateur...
+Aedan Alvena and you obvously are hiding you brain !
+EstrellaPolux by defending her now you offend professional singers.
+Aedan Alvena you are right...i can feel the tightness, as if there is something more that is not coming out... at least in this performance...
There are some astonishing comments from (presumably) opera snobs here, who clearly don’t realise that microphone technology has moved on since the days of Maria Calles.
@@alicjaalvena1120 Defending her = automaticly offending professional singers ?
I agree with you. Thanks for being the voice of reason and of educated taste
Very nice. On the other hand, people are funny. All these "professional comments"
evotime24 haha yeah for real, i want to see this troll commenting acting professional to perform in front of thousands
Perhaps I may not have a musical background about breath control and such ... but I know when I love a musical piece ... and I love this one!
I agree she's very young and beautiful but that still doesn't explain why her french is bad not to talk about intonation. if she was just a kid graduating that be one thing but she got one of the greatest contracts of all time so she's reaping in the money making singers who have worked so hard to perfection their skills feel like idiots. It can't only be looks for gosh's sake....
+Alma D. More or less what I was about to say...
@@thaliarice3891 Conservatories doesn't produce much of interest, if anything.
@@thaliarice3891 This are heavy accusations and you have no proof at all. You should be ashamed !
Ohh yeah... I couldn't stop staring at her talents...Bouncing as she sang...
I'll tell you what's huge right now!
Can't beat Maria Callas. This isn't the real deal.
BRAVO!!!!😊 👏👏🏆🎖
too breathy. I prefer her Italian songs.
She sings it beautifully. And she's taking the music to the people. People who would probably never hear it in a conventional opera format. Good for her! God Bless you girl.
Her poor breathing technique makes me feel tired...
Agreed. With opera, it’s not just about the notes. It sounds like she has just run a marathon.
Wonderful music ! Pretty singer !
I can't even listen to that...This is so poor..
My ear's bleeding
which ear?
her voice is stunning, absolutely beautiful. and while her breath support could use work it is not enough to make her performance anywhere near terrible. she is a wonderful singer.
Awful french
Eat shit, idiot.
She sings really good, and I love this song! ^^
better than maria callas in a video in youtube. katherine sings more well
spdt351 that's simply insulting to anyone who knows anything about music
🤣🤣🤣🤣
Easy sound better than Callas voice that must be one of harshest and ugliest ever existed 😀
I would love to learn opera singing!!!! Katherine Jenkins is amazing!!!!
Gorgeous! I love you Katherine!
As an italian born in PARMA I think my opinionated opinion is to be taken seriously >And very seriously I declare that this singer has QUALITIES of supreme excellence
no matter from which angle one analise her performances...especially the left and right and rear come to mind.Simply and utterly stupendous BRAVAAAA!!BRAVISSIMAAAA!!!
Ela canta muito bem ! Chante trés bien...Obrigado pela postgem desse maravilhoso video...
She is great. I enjoy all her work.
Beautiful simply beautiful
Very eloquent and complete review.....couldn´t have said it better!
i adore this piece so much.

i usually dont like yellow dresses but yellow looks good on her... she is a phenomenal singer and i wish her the best of luck in her new career.
Beautiful
She sounds great to me.
Her sound is so royal
I absolutely love Ms. Jenkins’ performance. Though I’m not a connoisseur of live theater or opera, I do enjoy some musical pieces thereof. “Habanera” from _Carmen_ is classic and a staple aria. While Ms. Jenkins is not Maria Callas, she absolutely did this piece justice. Her pitch is on point and the power of her vocals is wonderful! I don’t know what these snooty “noses so high in the air that they’d drown if it rains” MFers are going on about her “breathiness”. She’s brilliant!
3:24 _Si je t'aime...prends garde à toi!_
@Fujoshi101
The song is "Habanera" from the opera "Carmen" by french composer, Georges Bizet. It was published in 1845 and is in French.
J'aime cette aria! Wspaniałe wykonanie!
i dont see why people say so many bad things about her. her tecnique is perfectly fine and also she is a mezzo sopprana and they do have to take breathes more than sappranos as they sing depper notes and they require more air to produce hence more breathing is needed and also the dress is very tight and would restrict her breathing and she is one of the most famous opera singers of today if not all time so keep your comments to yourself because the world doesnt agree with you obviosly
Several years ago I had the privilege of hearing Domashenko in a live "Carmen" performance. She set the "Habanera" benchmark for me, in voice and in stage presence.
Seriously stunning, I dont care about her breathing or other nonsense, i just love the glorious sound that comes out of her mouth!!
0:28 Thanks for your upload.
Many thanks Cheers Grace 😉
She's my favourite
it's awesome.............
@acesofshadows I think she has one of the best frasing over this piece. The breathing is controlled and simply perfect. Every great singer, makes up their mind and frases the classical pieces as their own, and makes it unique. Anyone who can sing good can frase as other people, it takes a great singer to make its own and make it work as good:-) i think she is one of our times best Sopranos.
beautiful
The best version I heard XO
I could watch her voice all night!
@sherita1972: No, the song (and the entire opera Carmen) is in French. I always thought that strange, too, since it is set in Spain. But Georges Bizet, the composer, was French, as were the gentlemen who wrote the libretto.
@frufruJ The reason I think its the breathing is because of her face when she is singing it looks like shes not keeping enough air to do it that also might help with her projection to.
awsome!!!!!!!
I love this song so much.and love French.
No matter what kind of singer she really is, she does this one very well
There is no single opera language. Operas are performed in the language in which the words of the opera are written originally. Usually it's the language of the composer, but there are some exception e.g. when a composer lived in a different country for a while or some other reason. This aria comes from an opera by a French composer Bizet, so it is in French. I recommend googling for "Carmen synopsis" to get a story, also if you watch other performances of this aria you'll find subtitled ones.
that... was awesome... i tried singing with her and i couldnt stop giggling lmao
My grandma is a Opera singer from russia and when ever i go over to her house she is singing this song
@MrShadowGuns I am also speaking from experience, being a professional opera singer myself and having sung without a mic and over an orchestra. I also have many friends working as professional opera singers all over the world and they are not amplified. This is the technique used in classical singing and allows the voice to travel to the back of the auditorium. In other styles of singing a mic is most definitely needed as the technique is completely different. There are no holes in my argument.
This is wonderful, she is good and beautifull. I'm Brasilian and I'm learning to sing this opera. Inspiration. Congratulations. @NyrlenePamplona
@MrShadowGuns Yes, we are sure they aren't using body mics because we have EARS. Opera-goers can distinguish live sound over the amplified sound not to mention the sound coming from the stage and individual singers vs the sound coming from the speakers. The difference is obvious if you go to Broadway than go to the Met. Again, opera as a genre has 600 years of history and the singing style has developed over the years.
For the people that don't like this, why are you guys still here commenting?
I'm not sure this rendition is my cup of tea either, but what do you get out of bashing the woman?
I say leave the fan's to enjoy it for what it is, and go listen to a rendition you love instead.
@iam2sweet29 Actually Katherine is over 30 too now. In terms of voice and technique not developing until 30 - this is just something Katherine Jenkins said, it has no basis in reality. Elina Garanca may be over 30, but she's been singing in operas since she was in her early 20s and got international breakthrough at 27. Most opera singers are performing in smaller opera theaters while in their 20s. Anita Rachvelishvili who made a debut as Carmen in La Scala last year was 25.
wow, beautiful face, precious voice, lovely time.
@jewelmarkess I see there is competition! However, I did listen to both Elina Garanca and Rinat Shaham ... and both were beautiful. Each really brought their talents as Rinat was more flirty and fun in her style and Elina just blew me away!
too great
I LOVE YOU KATH !
@nimoisansvous yeah of course youre right, and shes got a great voice, i just meant, that she may not have so large lungs, if she needs a mic, although its hard in such a huge place and i really admire her voice.
Just lovely.
Gosh, I wish I knew as much about music as all of you guys....
Excellent! People posting and criticizing Katherine Jenkins know shit. Even the great Maria Callas was "breathy" at times. So if you're going to criticize, know what the hell you are talking about.
i listen to gangsta rap, pop, rock heavy metal. i love music that pleasures my ears and this song does, although i found a better one by a woman singing in an opera who was also moving around in her act.
@Stevenwigmore Her technique may be flawed, but she also brings a passion and a depth to the piece that makes it meaningful and evocative. THAT is something that technique cannot touch. As someone who has been studying this art for a great number of years, I can say that yes, her technique is a touch unrefined, but what she lacks in absolute technique she makes up for in spades in delivery.
bella e bravissima!
I love katherine jenkins 10.05.1987
