cpup100 It was for the 32X extension for the Genesis. Graphically speaking, it was the closest any console port came to perfection except the Music... It sounded worse than the DOS OPL Synth Emulation...
somehow this is the best version of this song I've ever heard. It's a song sort of meant to be listenned to coming out of a shitty soundblaster,, and the floppy drives give it an analog grunge feel that just naturally compliment the music In otherwords, you didn't put lipstick on a cow. And for that I thank you.
+Jacket John Romero just released an updated E1M8 map, so its a good moment to give it a go. Its a pretty good map: twitter.com/romero/status/688054778790834176
This actually sounds accurate to at least the "Distortion Guitar" instrument on one sound card (can't think of which) EDIT: Apparantely it's whatever DOSBox emulates.
Cheers for having videos with audio being the prime focus, not only executed well but sounds fantastic - even for youtube standards. They have a surprisingly strong amount of bass.

I saw the two-drive imperial march, I wanted to do it. I went on a quest to accomplish it and learned as much as I could. I coded something to achieve it, but by the means available to me, I had to program each individual note since I did not know enough about MIDIs and how to stream that data over a serial connection. Then I stumbled upon Sammy1Am's code. It wasn't the easiest thing to get setup, but it was by far (and still is) the best solution I've seen. Read my FAQ for the details.
I'd say so. The stepper motors on these were designed for long term use though. These things are made pretty tough. At best this represents heavy disk work, but definitely not something outside of their capability.
Floppy drives actually match the metal styled song for Doom's E1M1. Wonderful combination that doesn't make the music sound too messed up or harsh. Liking how this song is perfect for Doom music.
@Teammate92 Thanks SO much for translating this so I can read it! I feel so bad having to skip so many comments because it would just take too much time to translate them all! I hope this was good for you then =D
InfinityCraft Anything is better than that. 32X Doom's sound quality was absolute shit. Actually, that's a bit unfair. I'm sure the shit would take offense to being compared to 32X Doom.
@kartoffelesel It's a possibility, but I don't think the outcome would be good without some heavy algorithms to rearrange the music to become playable on the drives. I tweak these heavily to get them to play well!
...I don't even know what to say. Never thought I'd hear a bunch of floppy drives playing Doom music, much less doing it so perfectly. This is truly a work of (geeky) art :)
That same someone has 3.7 million views and an above 95% approval rating on each of his video. It does take time and effort to achieve something. It's not like people just sit back and just happen to accomplish things.
I was very clearly talking about the system itself. Damn, that thing is a noisy beast. Like trying to connect to a 56k internet, while I am sending a fax, and making a scan, while making a smoothie.
4t0zToFreedom I won't deny that the sound is far more limited compared to the SNES, but all it takes is some smart people to make some really nice beats. Yuzo Koshiro and Matt Furniss comes to mind.
That was one of the first changes I made to the code =) I'm actually using the digitalwritefast library to simplify the syntax. You can find it's google code project by, go figure, googling digitalwritefast. It's quite handy. Thanks though! I'm actually considering it also might be because the FTDI chip on my Duemillanove might be serving as a bottleneck for the serial packets. I want to try out an UNO when I can.
I'd say limit of the Arduino. But it could probably be remedied by a more efficient loop that handles the job of activating/deactivating drives. It really isn't an issue with like, 95% of the songs though.
@MrSolidSnake745 A thousand times yes. And this kind of pwnage should always be delivered to people who spout "You have way too much time on your hands."
I love how rich the sound of floppy drives is... the low buzzy notes in particular are so awesome! Seriously someone should figure out how to vary the volume on these things, would make the best instrument ever.

This is probably the best song you could have picked for floppy drives. The instruments are spot on.
I've never heard a floppy song that sounded so close to the original source. This is complete bliss. :)

What's funny is that this actually sound like the music from the game.
+cpup100 Back in the day I had such a shitty repro that probably was worse than this.
+cpup100 well... the OPL, anyway
Sounds way better than the Sega version of doom :)

sounds better than the genesis version XD

It actually does!

"analog grunge" sounds like an awesome music subgenre
Floppy is what genesisn't :D
Especially relevant in this case. The Sega Doom's E1M1 sounded like shit.

I bet those floppy drives have a copy of Doom inside.
that would be amazing
Well some of it at least... I remember Doom 2 had to be on like... 15 or so floppies back in the day? (Or a CD of course)
Even the shareware demo of the original took up 2 floppies.
How did I get here....
This was fucking awesome though.
Sounds better than the 32x Doom music.

The mechanical sound of these floppy drives translates the guitar part just PERFECT. Hat's off to you!
Sounds almost EXACTLY close to the OPL, just without drums.
This is so amazingly close, I almost cannot believe it.
are you sure that someone didn't copy audio from the game and put it in the video?

Play doom from floppy while playing the music with floppy disk drives and now you have something truly insane!
so this is what the floopy drives did to make the music in game cause it sounds almost exactly like it XD
My favorite game level theme remade by one of my favorite musicians on youtube. Thank you sir.
You sir are a bloody god!
Good God, I didn't expect this to be so spot-on. Takes me way back to my Doom days. Brilliant work.
Makes you wonder if this is how it was originally produced.. huhu
amazing job on the song! it sounds pretty much like how it did back in the 90's... and now, full of nostalgia, I think it's time to revisit this game.
what if the song was ORIGINALLY made on this?
probably was
It was made for the Roland Sound Canvas 55, for those of you who are wondering.
