    I love this. It never occurred to me to make Oreos myself. I don't buy processed foods if I can help it but Oreo's are one thing I make an exception for. But these I will definitely be doing. There's nothing better than having a mostly guilt free version. I'll take natural and homemade over store bought for sure! Thanks!

    One of the reasons I am subscribed to your channel Sam. U do everything from scratch as do I. U never know what they are putting in our foods. Cause I can't tell u how many ingredients are in a simple Oreo cookie that I can't pronounce and don't know what it is. But with your cooking I know exactly what I am eating and feeding my family. Much love and thanks from Heather your friend in Indiana. Keep doing the great job that u are.

    So I made these for hubby's birthday today with just a couple of minor changes. I didn't feel like rolling the dough and cutting out that many cookies, so I rolled the dough into a log and refrigerated it for a couple of hours, then sliced and baked. That worked great even if they were ugly AF because I can't roll a nicely rounded log, LOL. Also I don't keep shortening in the house so I used lard instead. I tasted the filling on it's own and had some concerns, ha ha, but once it was combined with the cookies you couldn't detect the lard flavor anymore, score! I definitely need more practice using a pastry bag but eventually got them all (double) stuffed and they really turned out great! I think hubby is really going to like them. 🥰

    Finally got around to making these for my niece with just regular cocoa powder. It’s like having 2 cookie recipes in one recipe. If you want oreos, make it with black cocoa powder. If you want chocolate cookies, use regular cocoa powder. I skipped the filling since I didn’t want sandwich cookies. I dipped them in white/milk chocolate and peanut butter. Sprinkled some andes mints and heath bar chunks on the white/milk chocolate. It was delicious. Definitely a fun cookie to make with kids if they’re around, regardless which route you go on the recipe ☺️

    So funny! I seriously was thinking a couple of days ago to find an Oreo cookie recipe snd here we are!
    Niiiice! Definitely going to be making these. Wonder how replacing shortening/Crisco with coconut oil. As long as it us cool, coconut oil is textured like Crisco. A little bit softer though, that's why I am wondering. Probably won't matter because she replace Crisco with butter if you wanted. So maybe I just answered my own question! If anything, just add more powdered sugar! I have everything except the black cocoa ...😢

    Hi! I am curious about using black cocoa. I purchased some a while ago and read that it is used mainly for its color in baked goods. So after watching your great video can you tell me what the flavor is like? Is it a deep chocolate flavor (like I hope it is)?

    • @SugarSpunRun
      @SugarSpunRun  Рік тому +1

      Black cocoa has a mellow, slightly earthy flavor with less bitterness compared to natural cocoa due to heavy alkalization. It's not as chocolatey as other cocoa powders, but it gives a strikingly rich, dark color to baked goods. So not a deep chocolate flavor, but it does give a distinct, classic "Oreo" flavor, which is why I used it here. I hope that helps! :)

    So if I just used regular cocoa powder instead of black cocoa powder, what would the difference be? Would it change bake time? Would there be a large difference in taste? I’m not too worried about it being perfectly like an oreo. I’m just not sure I want to get black cocoa powder for one recipe and never use it again lol. Plus I was going for dinosaur cookie cutters for my niece anyway. Would be a fun cookie to make for her. Nothing oreo about dinosaur shaped cookies 😂

      Regular cocoa powder will work. It will be a bit more chocolatey and won’t have the distinct Oreo flavor. 😊

    Shortening is what is used for oreos. No butter

    • @SugarSpunRun
      @SugarSpunRun  Рік тому +1

      Did you watch the whole video? I touch on this. Shortening is honestly not an ingredient that I love to use in my house so I minimized the use as much as possible while still using as little as I could get away with for a true-to-the-original filling. The point was to make a better version, but you can totally sub the butter for shortening 🙂

    LOL, why don't you ever use the stand mixer?

    • @SugarSpunRun
      @SugarSpunRun  Рік тому +2

      Haha, I do use it for most of my recipe testing. I like to try most of my recipes with the stand mixer and with an electric mixer, That way if there are any differences I notice or things to be aware of with the different methods I can pass those notes on to my readers so that they can make adjustments as needed. When I’m filming videos for UA-cam, I found that it was harder for the camera to get a good shot of what was happening inside the stand mixer bowl so I like to use my electric mixer instead so that anyone watching can very clearly see the batter or dough that I’m making. I hope that makes sense!
