  • In partnership with the New Hampshire Department of Education, the R.E.A.C.T. awareness initiative offers students tips to deal with signs of emotional suffering, and directs them to resources for support and help. On Thursday, October 26, NH Education Commissioner Frank Edelblut joined D-H Senior Director of Public Affairs John Broderick at Mascoma Valley Regional School District to present the R.E.A.C.T. initiative and discuss the importance of reducing the stigma of mental illness.

I have had mental problems for the last 25 years. No friends, family won't associate with me, can't get or hold a job. I spend every day in my home, watching videos, unable to connect to anyone even online. All because of the images in my own mind that scared me to the point I couldn't sleep. So now I am on heavy drugs, seeing doctors is my social life, and no hope for the future. I feel like getting involved in helping people like me, but I have obligations at home helping my old father. It's good to hear of the struggles of others in dealing with these issues, but I feel it will be impossible to change the public opinion on mental illness, especially with our media demonizing the mentally ill in movies and on the news every single day. Thank you for caring.

They need to change the way professionals treat the mentally ill..I know as I have been mistreated and humiliated by the medical and psychiatric professionals during an 11 year stint in and out of mental hospitals..We don't need drugs! We need LOVE..We need real group therapys not crayons and a coloring book...

      Suzanne Robichaud same here.
Saw a psychiatrist that was only concerned with his payment and went ahead to prescribe without hearing what I had to say. This affected me immensely.

I am an avid #MentalHealthAwareness advocate and performer, and I love this so much. I travel the country trying to bring that awareness on stages, in classrooms, hospitals, and on my UA-cam channel, so I get excited when I see other advocates. 💙❤

i think i don’t have a mental health problem but as a person that has survived traumatic events occuring since childhood the best thing i can say is that there is always calm before and after the storm...for me watching this keeps me feeling safe and sane and centered

There’s a big stigma. I have schizoaffective disorder and was admitted to the hospital for chest pain. I got suicidal and ended up on Baker act. Before that happened I was treated great. But, afterwards I was treated like I was stupid. Also, after hospitalization for severe depression, my parents’ friends treated me differently. It’s a silent disorder and disabling. I used to keep quiet about it at work. Because, I was afraid to be fired.

I am also. I hear fully what you say. I am trying to fight it too. I have Major Depression and Generalized Anxiety Disorder. I have never been jailed Hospitalized. But know stigma .It happens with sight impairments too. NAMI has a campaign. Please sign. It will help all of us. Problem is society.Insurance companies don't think funding cognitive behavior therapy. But it is effective. They would prefer to just medicate. This guy this Judge deserves a Root beer. Thank God he realized the typical human response.

The stigma on mental health in my country (Nigeria) is high. A lot of people don’t even want to relate with you if they hear you suffer from one mental health issue or the other. It’s a constant struggle to sensitize people on this issue here because their opinions are based drawn from religion and tradition. But this didn’t stop me from speaking up in my UA-cam videos. Thanks for this video 🙏🏽🙏🏽

According to the World Health Organization in 2004, depression is the leading cause of disability in the United States for individuals ages 15 to 44. Absence from work in the U.S. due to depression is estimated to be in excess of $31 billion per year. Depression frequently co-occurs with a variety of medical illnesses (such as heart disease, cancer, and chronic pain) and is associated with poorer health status and prognosis. Each year, roughly 30,000 Americans take their lives, while hundreds of thousands make suicide attempts. In 2004, suicide was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States (third among individuals ages 15-24). Despite the increasing availability of effectual depression treatment, the level of unmet need for treatment remains high. By way of comparison, a study conducted in Australia during 2006 to 2007 reported that one-third (34.9%) of patients diagnosed with a mental health disorder had presented themselves to medical health services for treatment.
