    Mark Danielson gave me a tour of the aircraft on display at the Carswell Air Force Base, now called JRB Forth Worth.
    Mark was in both the NAVY and Air Force and he flew both the A-4 and F-4. Mark was instrumental in getting most of the aircraft you see on display at the base

    Thank you for this tour. I really enjoyed it. My family moved to Ft Worth in 1974 after my father retired from the Air Force after 32 years and 9 months. We spent a lot of time on Carswell shopping and playing golf. Got there when the F-105s and B-52s were flying and left just before the Navy took over. Every time we played golf in the 80s or 90s we got an air show from General Dynamics (then) with F-16s turning and burning overhead. I'll always treasure those memories now that my father has passed. Thanks again sir!

    Thanks for documenting the history of these displays.
    Myself and AM2 Halphen painted the F-14. Our names I see are still up in port wheel well. The rest of crew were mostly to supervise and help with the huge amount of prep work. There was no way I was going to paint over the many layers of failed topcoat. So I decided we needed to remove as much of the cracked paint as necessary to achieve a satisfactory finish. We had only 2 weeks to get it done and worked many overtime hours.
    The grey paint is DuPont Inron single stage with multiple layers. It would easily buff out to it’s former sheen if someone wanted to go through the hassle. Still have a gallon way past it’s shelf life leftover in my shop for some reason. Good to see it’s still around. -AM1 Peters Retired

    Carswell AFB was my 1st assignment while in the USAF. I was there from Nov '66 to Apr '68. My unit was the 7th SPS, aircraft security, B-52 & the KC-135. It was a great experience for me. I liked the Ft. Worth area and would have probably stayed in the area after discharge if spending my entire enlistment at Carswell but to spend an enlistment at the same base was extremely rare. I was not aware that Horace Carswell was buried on the base when I was there.
    Great video and thanks for making and posting it.

    Great video Eric. I lived in Benbrook, on the flight path for the B-52's and others. That was in the early 80's when Carswell was still a SAC base. I used to set along side the main runway, at the fence line, on the road leading to General Dynamics and watch B-52's doing touch and goes and watch the new F-16's being test flown and doing vertical climbs when they got to mid field. I also saw the 747 with the space shuttle on the top make a stop for the night at Carswell. Awesome to go to their open houses every 2 years too. Those were some great times. Thanks again.

    I was stationed at Carswell twice in my 8 year Air Force career. First time was 1961 thru 1963, and the second time 1965 to 1968. I was a RADAR Tech in the communications squadron as a GCA radar repaiman. The RAPCON (radar approach control) control room was below the tower and the GCA (ground control approach) unit was on the flight light on the east side of the runway about mid point.. The longer range RADAR was south of the field in the golf course. When I first got there the B58's were just becoming operational and still training the flight crews in TF102's as the announcer said. Then I went to Okinawa/Thailand/Vietnam for a couple of years. One thing I remember was when SAC went on a alert and I was always was assigned to the GCA unit right beside the runway and all the B58's and B52's would all line up and take off south to north, 58's first then 52's and head straight north for the pole. Kind of made you wonder if this was the "big one" and maybe the Russians had their bombers inbound to us also Burn't JP4 smell was in the air and if it was night you could see the flames exiting the 58's 4 afterburners. But thankfully it was all part of the readiness operation. Carwell/Ft Worth was great duty and the people very acceptance of service people!!! Bob M.

    His talk about flat spins in an f-14, makes goose dying make more sense. I've always watched top gun, and wondered why they didn't call goose's death a malfunction. Even in the movies, him hitting the canopy on the way out would never have been Maverick's fault.

    That was great- hope one day I make it down to see those aircraft. Know a bit about the SAC history of Carswell AFB, it was rich. Also I believe the General Dynamics production facility bordered the airfield.

    • @rkelsey3341
      @rkelsey3341 5 років тому

      That facility is still there and has been since pre-WWII. Through the years, it has been known as Consolidated, General Dynamics, and now Lockheed Martin. The mile long production line has produced B-24s, B-36s, B-58s, F-111s, F-16s, and now F-22s. IIRC, when the B-36s first rolled off the production line, there were only 2 runways in the USAF which could handle them, one of which was Carswell.

    Hello I have found the video you posted about the abandoned F-14’s and F-4 I would like to know the location please. I served with the Marine Corps and was recruited out of the Dallas MEPS and my father was an F-4/F-16 crew chief in the Air Force, I have always had a love and admiration for the F-4 airframe and would love to be able to see it in person. Thank you for whatever choice you make in regards to sharing the information.

      Christopher, a lot of museums now have F-4s and some also have F14s. The Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, Florida, is a fantastic museum, should you get down that way. The Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio is equally impressive. I referred your location question to Erik Johnston.

    The F-105 was not the fastest in the Vietnam War.
    The F-111 was definitely faster.
    Carswell AFB was the initial FB-111A base for SAC, I believe for training, not sure.
    Are there any F-111s or FB-111As on display there?

    • @bwinmaine
      @bwinmaine 11 місяців тому +1

      There is an F-111E at the Fort Worth Aviation Museum. I was a young Airman in the avionics shop for the FB-111A when the first one was delivered to the Air Force and was in the F-111E avionics shop in Upper Heyford, England when the first E models were delivered before the long grounding happened. We're talking 1969, 1970.

    Carswell needs a B-52 and KC-135

    • @markdanielson9407
      @markdanielson9407 5 років тому +1

      They had a B-52, but it was removed under the SALT treaty. The KC-97 that was formerly part of the Carswell museum was also removed because the TANG didn't want to maintain it. The cost of maintaining these aircraft is high because there is no military budget to cover them. There have been attempts to get a B-52, but to date, there has been no progress.

    • @markdanielson9407

      The intent was to display aircraft that had been flown by the tenant Reserve and Guard units. The Army National Guard's UH-1 that they flew in Desert Storm was removed, presumably by them, since they never moved to Fort Worth. The OH-58 flown by the Army Reserve remains, but their helicopter unit never moved to NAS FW JRB. The F-111 was never assigned to Carswell AFB, but there is one on display at the nearby Fort Worth Aviation Museum near Meacham Field.
