Hi, I've decided to try and play violin again. I'm 51 and I have question. First off, I'm so excited to see that you are still active on youtube. You are one of my favorite teachers. My name is Isa. And finally my question. My biggest hurdle has been how to hold the violin in the left hand and have finger independence. I know I must be doing something wrong, or my wrist just doesn't twist 🤔 is this common? Honestly, I don't know exactly what the problem is so I don't know how to fix it 🤷‍♀️ in my mind my wrist doesn't twist so playing violin is impossible. But that can't be cause everyone plays violin. Long finger people, short finger people, guys with short stubby man hands etc.... so I figure I must be doing something BIG wrong. My daughter doesn't understand my question, and she quit playing, so I now have my choice of 2 beautiful violins to play. I do play a little bit of Cello, flute, piano, guitar, and clarinet. So music reading is good. It's just this left hand wrist twist thing 🤦‍♀️

Hey aspenx, I recognize your screen name for some reason. I am trying to be active on YT......I always read comments.....and big plans for more videos coming soon.
Anyway, I understand your question totally. It is not common for a hand/wrist to TRULY be unable to rotate.....but it IS common for a person to BELIEVE that it can't rotate.
However, I have a private student who told me her wrist cannot rotate, and I didn't believe her....but she insisted, and it turns out she was born with 2 bones fused in her arm, preventing rotation in 1 direction.
USUALLY, people have a concept that their body works or doesn't work a certain way and becomes a self-fulfilled prophecy. YOu need to explore the field of BODY MAPPING to get to the bottom of your issue. THere is a book called "What every violinist needs to know about the body" by Jennifer JOhnson. Either buy that, OR....just contact her for a private lesson. (email me, I'll put you in touch with her lora@reddesertviolin.com) She will help you get your answer, AND find the solution. She's awesome.

Aspenx, aka Isa...take her Suzuki 1 and 2 courses. I promise you will NOT be disappointed. She will show you amazing exercises and teach you EXACTLY what you are seeking, and a LOT more.

Question: Are you planning on continuing your Suzuki series past volume 4? Would think Volume 5, 6, etc. would be on the way? Or do tend to push students to personal one on one teaching by that point?

Hey! Thank you for your kind words. Suzuki 5 and beyond: of course I would LOVE to do all 10 volumes of Suzuki, but each course takes thousands of hours, and the higher we go, the fewer people there are at that level. And, yes, there is some value in getting one on one personal instruction at that level for sure. However, many people don't have that option due to location or finances. I have been fantasizing about just teaching the TUNES "song coach style", to help people get themselves through the books, and then recommend accompanying etudes and scales to support the advanced levels. So I hope to offer these levels at some point, but it won't be for at least 18 months sadly!

@@RedDesertViolin Interesting ideas! I definitely see and certainly appreciate all the hard work you put into your courses---they are an absolute bargain for we pay for them. Could not be happier with your teaching. Thank you.
