  • This is a video of my first paddle with my new Swift Canoe Adirondack Pack 13.6 boat. Overall I'm really impressed with the boat and I'm looking forward to doing longer trips with the boat. For more information check out this link.

    Look at you!, awesome job on the video, man. Much more effort than normal, a slider, voice overs, and looks like you got that camera too.
    Great video.

    I'm from Ontario and I have the same boat (but the older version when they still used wood for the thwarts). Mine has the Teal Barracuda cloth as the outer layer. I use it primarily for remote fishing. I have no complaints and I can't imagine going back to a larger canoe as I love the balance of the kayak paddling and the ridiculous light weight of the boat. Nice speed too. I'm sure it would be classified as a 'compromised' boat, but that is an argument for purists. Swift has developed newer models which may be better for trippers. Fit and finish is off-the-charts good IMO. The folks at Swift were really nice to deal with at the show. While pricey, all of Swift's products are good value if you live in the USA as the Canadian Dollar has magically crapped out in comparison.
    For a NY State person, the comparison would be against models from Placid Boatworks (not sure if they are around anymore) or the NEXT canoes for the budget-minded person.
    I would buy it again or their new Keeywadin version if I was more focused on tripping as opposed to fishing... The Innegra Basalt lay-ups look great. Carbon package may not be ideal for the fisherman and their clamp-on rod holders. Look for Swift at your boat/outdoor show. They were very nice.

      Placid Boatworks is definitely still around! I just picked up their Rapid Fire pack canoe. Very nice boat!

    Just got mine at Canoecopia in Madison, Wisconsin, drove from Las Vegas and back, tested on the Colorado river from Glen Dam to Lees Ferry, Arizona, on the way back where I almost die thrown out of it in choppy waters with winds gusts of 40 mph. I was in a real dire situation I put myself into because my lack of experience; I thought I was going to buy it on that day March 13, 2019 BUT, even when I had no real control of the boat at times, miraculously survived that, was stranded on a tiny stretch of the river bank for hours before rescue back to safety of a campground by the River Wilderness Adventures Outfitters, where I expended a second night and paddle back the 12 miles to Lees Ferry launch ramp without mayor issues with great weather on May 14. The canoe was hard for me to control tracking and I found myself expending more energy to paddle it comparing it with my other pack Hornbeck Classic 12 with hollow cheeks but that said, if I had found myself on the same situation with the Hornbeck boat I would have gone in the water and died from hypothermia probably as rescue was hours away as I was told when reaching the shore. I found the Swift faster as it is larger than the other one but harder to keep on course, but as far as stability goes, for me, who are way overweight, it is easy to get in and out; I had no crazy tipping as doing so and it is definitely more stable than the Hornbeck Classic Pack 12. I will edit the video of the whole ordeal including the whole trip (3750 miles driven out and back from Las Vegas) I had the pleasure of meeting the Swift team and Joe Robinet and chat some with him and watch his presentations. I can not wait for the adventures of you two together to come; I subscribed to your channel and I just wish I could go with you guys...did not died on my first try of the Swift, so not planning to die either in the subsequent trips!

      I moved and sold the boat. I had it for 2 years and it worked great. I did a trip this fall with Joe Robinet and used the same model boat. Of the various Swift models it’s probably the best general purpose pack boat. If you are a bigger guy or want to haul a bunch of gear it might make sense to look at a long model. But for 1-2 week long trips for guys under 225-250ish it’s a great boat.

    I've used a canoe with the bench and seat cushion and am wondering if that sitting configuration would cause more circulation fatigue in your lower body? The boat handled those elements great and really nice work getting shots of the waterfowl and other fauna.

    One question...won't you get soaked paddling in the rain? At least in a canoe the seat is several inches off the bottom.

    • @BigMikeMcBastard
      @BigMikeMcBastard 7 років тому

      The seat on this boat is elevated slightly. You aren't going to be sitting in water unless you allow several inches of rain to accumulate.

    What length of paddle do you use? I am 5.10 and wondering if 230 or 250cm works better in this boat.

    I elected not to purchase this layup of boat after 60 hours of research due the their tendency toward a fragile nature. Sensitive to: tie downs atop automobiles, bumping logs, definitely bumping rocks, pulling over beaver dam with gear in = potentials for spider webbing, cracks, fracture lines. I was incredibly luck in finding a new (never touched the water) Old Town Pack Canoe manufactured in 2014 - The old kevlar, 12 feet long, 3ish inches wide, 11 inches deep and only 33 pounds. Her maiden voyage was superior. Video at ua-cam.com/video/6OFK1vbSXB0/v-deo.html.

    Kyle , I have an opportunity to get a deal on your canoe, are you still pleased with it after so many years.. thanks.Also , if I put a booster seat in it could I paddle it with a regular canoe paddle? Do you find while paddling water drops in off the paddle? Thanks.

    How hard is it to get in and out of? I have a Hemlock Nessmuk XL and it's a bit of a challenge to get in and out of for this 60 Y/O paddler. Any tips would be appreciated.

    • @BurleyOutdoors
      @BurleyOutdoors  8 років тому

      Since this video I have gotten better. I typically grab the canoe thwart in front of me and just stand up in the boat and then step out. Its still not quite as easy to get out of because your so low to the deck and your knees have to bend quite a bit.

    • @BurleyOutdoors
      @BurleyOutdoors  9 років тому

      +WELSBY ROOTS I have rented 2 boats made out of the same material and I can attest that is pretty tough stuff. With an canoe you need to be careful but it will stand up to use.

    just ordered one, hey question, I saw on one of Shawn James's videos he used the double paddle and a couple sections of water weenie to use as a yoke to carry a pack boat, it was a pack 14, do you think that the paddle when taken apart will work in the pack 13.6 ? ie are the halves long enough to reach and be attached to the cross beams in the pack 13.6

    Hope you're still monitoring these comments, because your video has me seriously considering buying this boat. No where I could spot in your later canoeing videos have I heard a reference to how much weight you've got in it. I'd probably average around 220 pounds total load if I buy one. Would that load give you any cause for concern in this boat?

    • @BigMikeMcBastard
      @BigMikeMcBastard 7 років тому

      If you check the Swift Canoes website, it says that the optimal load for this pack boat is 140 - 280 lbs, and the industry capacity is 400 lbs.

    Honestly man. I'm looking to maybe buy this boat. Or a swift. And from that viewer perspective. This video is horrible. You dont explain anything about how the boat paddles. Turns, tracks etc. Maybe thats not what you were going for. Maybe I could ask you how you like the boat? How was it getting in and out? Howd it handle bigger water?. Expensive so I like to know personal experiences with the swifts.
