    You got me thinking on this. Im new to suppressors and decided to see what would happen doing a side by side comparison suppressed and unsuppressed. Gun is a Ruger American Predator in 6.5CDM. Can is a Rugged Surge 7.62 I had not planned on doing this comparison when I left the house so I left my Garmin Xero doppler chronograph at home. Additionally I was shooting only at 100yds. My club has a 300yd range but it requires a bit more setup and wrap up vs just the 100yd range. Shooting my hunting load that this gun really seems to like (Hornady Precision Hunter ELD-X) got a nice tight group about 1.5" high which puts it dead on at 200yds. Removed the can and got another nice tight group but 4" low. No left to right shift at all. Surprised I switched to my 300BLK using another good hunting load (Black Hills 110gn Barnes TAC-TX I believe). Similar results. Group size seems identical, no L/R shift but the group fired suppressed was several inches lower than the group fired un-suppressed. I need to use my chrono on the next range session and make the effort to use the 300yd range and re-zero with the can removed and then see what difference there is. Gosh I wish I had someplace to shoot beyond 300yds but I've been unable to find anyplace that's not at least a half days drive away from me. Love the detail you put into your videos. Definitely helps me make the most out of each range session.

    Great job as always! I think it would be easier to visualize the data if you summarized it on a single piece of paper or slide. It can be difficult to remember the numbers from suppressed vs unsuppressed but having something like suppressed vs unsuppressed velocity and the drops side by side for the different ranges you fired at would make the summary much easier to comprehend. Also, 2.6 SD on that FGMM is insane!

    Interesting, I wonder how the suppressor would effect shot groups with different barrel lengths, thinkness/design, and materials. You would think the suppressor (different lengths and weights) effects the barrel harmonics and shot grouping...now thinking about it, this might be reflected by the impact locations.

    Without having watched the video yet I know that groups will shift. So long as you can unmount and re-mount with repeatability then those groups should stay consistent. Don't expect to be on target when you remove the can, obviously. So opt to zero the gun with the suppressor mounted or unmounted and leave it alone. If you want it suppressed but have to remove it every time for transportation purposes, then use a quick mount system that's repeatable. People seem to hate Q products due to K. Brittingham or whatever his name is, but I happen to enjoy my Thunder Chicken. Thinking about picking up a 300 PRC and testing out some super long distance shooting using the can...

    • @Bizill75
      @Bizill75 Рік тому

      AFA super long distance, I'll predict the suppressor not slowing the bullet but rather speeding it up and necessitating elevation adjustment accordingly. Seems the suppressor will slow it, but I think it might speed it up. Let's see as I continue to watch your vid...

    No surprises here. Too many misconceptions with suppressors due to games and lack of experience with them. I like how you break it down barney style. I would like to see the repeatability of POI shift between taking the suppressor on and off. Although with it being a surefire can it probably is gonna be consistent.

    I know you’ve probably answered this question in the past but what shooter app do you find the most consistent? Dialing in my 6ARC with Hornady 4dof hasn’t proven itself effective for me. It’s off at least a few 10ths on average compared to other ballistic calculators

    Correct me if I’m wrong here, but wouldn’t the dope for the ranges be fairly identical since the POA/POI shift for the can was already delt with when the rezero happened?

      @MountainsMulletsMerica  Рік тому

      Well that’s the main thing I’m showing in this video and yes I’d say the results shown in the video match your comment exactly. Seems like a lot of people think suppressors drastically change velocity or range and if that were the case then the bullet drop would also be different. Given velocity barely changes though bullet drop is nearly identical.

    Great videos, most are a bit over my head, but I still get the gist of what you are doing and saying. Maybe this isn’t your thing, and if so, that’s fine… I would love to see some content for newbies… I would also love to see your recommendations for both a large and small game hunting rifles (including scope and preferred ammo). What books would you recommend for a newb looking to get into long range shooting? What about reloads? I would love to see you cover night vision and regular scopes, non lead bullets, suppressor, etc.
    I’m interested in getting into long range shooting. I hope to learn more about it and do it as a hobby. But I am also leaning more towards extreme accuracy for hunting and varmint control. I’m also not a soldier wannabe, and I don’t mean that in any way as a negative towards soldiers and our veterans (of which I hold the highest respect, regards, and gratitude towards). What I mean is that I have no desire to pretend to be a soldier, a typical wannabe that buys an AR and has some unrealistic Rambo fantasy… I wish to be able to shoot at 1000+ yards, as accurate as possible, with rifles I might also use to harvest a deer, elk, or wild pig (I wouldn’t try to shoot game at 1000+ yards, just metal targets). And I prefer to shoot non lead bullets (I don’t wish to pollute my farm nor nature with toxic lead).
    So if not your cup of tea, I totally get that… But I suspect that you have enough knowledge that some videos geared towards newbs would school some of the higher end folks as well. And you might help bring others into the sport. Thanks.

      Nah I haven’t shot a match in a couple years now. I got super busy with work when I moved out west and didn’t have the time to practice and chase the matches. The channel has been my main focus recently as it’s less intensive from a practice standpoint and I can create content on my own schedule. I love shooting matches and will likely randomly shoot one occasionally but not as seriously as I used to. For the record I was never that good anyway so don’t want folks thinking that haha

    .308 just gets blown around a lot at 1000yds, unfortunately. I have a much less sophisticated 6.5cm setup and 1000 yard Ipsc target impacts are very easy with it. I have no doubt that rifle is better than mine but .308 wind calls are just far tougher

    Factory ammo variance is vary obvious at those distances. I was surprised to see you were shooting factory match. Might be worth weighing them and shorting them to try to lower that variance.

    • @MountainsMulletsMerica
      @MountainsMulletsMerica  Рік тому +5

      I believe shooting factory ammo is a bit more relatable for the viewer. Sure I could work up a handload that maybe performs a little better but that would be something specific to my rifle and loading abilities. By running factory match I believe it establishes a baseline that any viewer can replicate. Sure I’ve shot handloads on video but for something like this I think factory ammo is a better fit. Thoughts on that?
