- Since theaters are shut down due to corona virus. I've decided it was a good time to start checking off classics I've never seen from my movie Bucket List.
First up, Chinatown (1974) Directed by Roman Polanski and Staring Jack Nicholson & Faye Dunaway. Often regarded as one of the finest scripts ever written. It's hard to believe I haven't seen this beautifully crafted film... until now!

Chinatown is probably my favorite film of all time. It’s a wonderful complex story that never panders to its audience. One of things it’s about, and it’s about many themes, is the consequences of good intentions. Jake throughout the film makes errors in judgment that actually help bring about the tragic ending. As one critic noted, Jake continually thinks he’s five steps ahead when he’s actually five steps behind. Evelyn is actually the heroine of the film as she actually attempts to stand up to the overwhelming forces mounted against her. Good review. I’m glad you’ve added this masterpiece of cinema to your library.
Thank You! And I appreciate the further analysis, its something that I'm definitely looking forward to watching again. I couldn't stop thinking about it after the first time i watched it. They don't make them like this anymore. The way the characters and plot are used to toy with your expectations as a viewer is something special.
I first saw this movie when it came out in 1974 & I was a teenager & I loved it. Growing up in the 70s I was blessed to be a part of Hollywood's true Golden Age. I can watch Chinatown anytime . Enjoyed your review & would recommend a couple of other movies from the 70s that need to be watched more than once to get the whole story, Deliverance & Marathon Man.
I've seen this movie three times...i don't get it. I found it horrendously dull. Forgetful even. So I rewatch it and a few years later, almost completely forgotten. I've actually been meaning to rewatch it and finally watch the sequel as I absolutely LOVE Jack.
I hope to finally get something from it. Because I never ever have.
Funny that you mispronounced Gittes' name as "Gitts", just like Noah Cross in the movie. I guess that wouldn't happen with repeated viewings, as the detail is there to show off the antagonist's arrogance and disregard for the main character. I've seen the film twice now and love all technical aspects of it - the flow, atmosphere, acting (especially Jack Nicholson's), dialogue, score etc., but as far as the story goes, all the parts didn't really add up to something bigger for me. While I found the historical background interesting and intriguing, the whole incest story seemed a little too contrived and I didn't care enough about Evelyn to justify the whole build-up. Likewise, the ending wasn't as shocking and bleak as, say the ending of "Seven". Still, it's a well-made film, and certainly rewards multiple viewings as it's mostly confusing the first time around. Thanks for the review!
Very well made film. It definitely lived up to the hype i heard before i saw it. Thank You for your comment and for watching!
