Tbh, affordability is going to keep retro handhelds in demand. A lot of people just want something affordable to do some 2-D gaming on. Every so often, I'll post a pic of me playing on my Miyoo Mini+, and I'll get hit with comments on where they can buy theirs. (I bought mine on Amazon to cut my wait time down, but on AliExpress, they're more affordable than a new Switch game.) The hardcore enthusiasts are going to want devices like the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, the ROG Ally, or a Steam Deck; people that just want to play some Pac-Man or Mario will be happy with a Miyoo Mini+ or anything from the Anbernic RG line.
One of the things that a "switch experience" can't give me is specifically android gaming. More and more "mobile" games are requiring better and better devices, but phones aren't always the best way to play them.
Same thing happened with electric guitars, you had the big brands and then people started to copey them, at the time Japan was pumping out very good high quality copies so was Korea, the big companies like Fender and Gibson did try and stop them but in the end they hired them to make guitars under there brand, it could be possible for these retro handheld companies to have some kind of licence with Nintendo/sega/sony/ect... ... It would be cool to have this happen
Interesting conversation, it's so hard to know where these things will go but I'm glad to be apart of it right now. Also what an awesome spot for drone flying :)
Same. Yes it's my usual spot but I am trying to find more places. My environment lends itself to longer flight over the forests and mountains so I am building a drone with better video signal.
Eeeeey! Made it into the video somehow. And it was the Ayaneo Pocket S celebrating 1,000 units sold, which is not good in my eyes. I really think this market may eventually slow down, but not to the point where it just dies off.
Jeepers that's even worse than I remember!! No I agree I don't think it will die, the players in the market are too strong and gaming is too powerful a niche.
That video had such a unique energy, loved the convo, loved the vibe. I gotta say "retro" has not had the same appeal for me lately. I feel like you addressed many of the things that are reshaping my perception of that product space.
Thanks Klef. Yes I didn't realise this would resonate so well I thought this would just be a low key video. Looks like alot of people are thinking about this.
I liked the video, but allow me to disagree on 2 things: 1) "the 35xxSP is a great device" - from an engineering standpoint it's a bit too much form over function. The battery on top of the CPU without any thermal protection is bad design and asking for trouble. 2) one thing we learned (or should have learned) from the Steam deck is that we need more powerful Linux handhelds (midrange/$150 and above). People have been hyping the RK3588S SOC because it'll be the biggest chipset upgrade in a while that should run linux. Thank you for your videos. I have sat and watched ALOT of your videos. I have been wanting a quality retro handheld device, but when I began looking, I got all these different “brands” and didn’t know what to think. After watching your videos, I now realize they are a bunch of knockoffs just like anything else. I appreciate you talking about the REAL devices. Thank you for what you do. You have really helped me in my research. I feel much more confident and comfortable making this purchase.
As wearisome as I've been finding Anbernic's ridiculously fast paced release cycle of pumping out a new device every 3 weeks and oversaturating the market, I think there's always going to be a demand for affordable and easy to use devices that can play all the games people are nostalgic for that may not be part of the small catalog of retro games available on the Switch and the like. There's definitely still room for improvement in the Android space too as prices on SD8 Gen 2 chips and the like come down, giving the consumer more power, bigger screens, better ergonomics, and so on for less money.
Hey. Yes the Android space is very vibrant. Another thing I thought regarding Anbernic is that they have been fighting for dominance for a while, and I think they are simply trying to get ahead of everyone, like the Miyoo A30 and their upcoming flip
Yeah, you buy the 35XXH to have that first universal standard handheld with sticks, then maybe take a sidestep to "mini" which is charming and practical - Miyoo A30 or 28XX, and then it's the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro, and then potentially a SteamDeck if you're into that.
I see FPGA'S continue to evolve there is a lot of room for improvement for FPGA's but even with where they are at now nothing beats FPGA'S. With it being able to replicate the hardware 1to1 for the newer era stuff like PS1 and beyond emulation rules. Another great way to play if not the best is og hardware with Custom Firmware, scalers, adapters and Mods like flashcarts, RGB and HDMI mods. There is no better time than to enjoy them today.
Great video! I've been thinking about getting a drone for a few years now. It looks like fun! The thing about the 35XXSP is that it scratches that nostalgic itch for a lot of people. If Anbernic (or another company) released a GBA form factor, it would be just as successful. The GB/GBC form factors are all over the place, but the no one's tackled the GBA, and I'd like to see that happen.
wow, this is such a full-circle moment for podcast listeners! you talked about drones and future of handhelds there, while I was playing Everybody's Golf on PS3 (which primarily consists of flying the camera around to align the shot!) and now to actually see that other side is so cool! although, admittedly, it's harder to focus on what you're saying when all I could think of is how the camera footage looks like it's a digitized VHS because of the interference..
My two main hobbies are FPV and retro gaming so this video hits so hard. I love analog the latency is important to gamers. I suggest flying in the simulator a lot and trying flips and rolls, it gets really in “acro” mode. The cruising is great tho wonderful cinematic vibes
I think retro gaming is just "getting started." I have this crazy feeling that the market is going to flood more than it has thus far, but with more and more names we've never seen, and may never see again. (Also, not sure if my other comment posted, but congrats on 18k! 💚)
Interesting video topic and format! After the form factor crazyness of the past 2 years my bet/hope is that manufacturers will sit on some designs and refine controls, battery, software and of course performance experience. Take the RG556 and put some Retroid/Ayn joysticks on it, Miyoo’s buttons and improve the plastic quality. Let finally let Miyoo’s release its Flip, and make a more powerful horizontal buttons with their craft.
The more I think about what I said here the more I think I am right about the low end vs the midrange like Retroid. Retroid are perfecting their devices as opposed to market saturation and I think they will stand the test of time. Ah... who knows.
I think you're right about Low and mid tier doing fine for a very long time. But I do see at least a drop in sales happening eventually, and I think this is just due to the fact we have hit a plateau. Besides making a dual screen style device that can emulate DS/3DS well, what is left? I personally have all grounds covered with my handhelds besides that dual screen I am waiting for.
We are definitely in an interesting time for handheld gaming. The sheer amount of stuff popping up shows how accessible it is to make these now. I think it's only a matter of time before the market explodes with switch and steam deck like devices. The cheaper retro gaming devices are just a gate way drug to handheld gaming. I think there is a lack of competition for pc handhelds, we only have a few options.
I really enjoyed the introduction to your FPV channel and the correlation between the drone market and retro handhelds. These days I try to keep my purchases to those systems that are offering something different, but that is getting harder as most releases seem to be based on previous and/or competitor's success . When a generation maybe lasts a year, it gets harder to justify paying $300 - 400 for a system that doesn't offer much over the previous generation. My question for you is where do you see manufacturers like Ayn and Steam taking the market in the next few years?
Hey man I don't know where they'll take it. I HOPE that they just keep perfecting their products. I nicer designed Odin 2. SteamOS on Android. A Steamdeck Mini. A super powerful SteamDeck. That sort of thing.
Bloodborne will be a retro game in 2040s lol. Btw I have sooo many retro handhelds now, I am getting tired of them even though I love most of them at the same time. Now how would I store them well so I could preserve hardware and sd cards for as long as possible. Hey, that's an idea for your next video, Adin 😅
I'm really getting seriously concerned of how to maintain their batteries without them becoming a fire hazard. I suppose getting them to 50% battery is ideal and starting them every so often (not sure how often) and maybe putting them in a fireproof locker? Or straight up selling them.
@@cappnplanetcappnplanet3237funny enough most of these chinese retro handhelds are easier to manage since they don't drain battery when turned off. Steam Deck on the other hand drains battery all the time, even when completely shut down, can go down to 0% in two-three weeks.
@@adinwallsyeah no but seriously 😅 These things are perfect time capsules. The only problem is that they can be dangerous if not stored properly. I asked chat gpt some tips and how long these devices can survive in perfect conditions and it was something like up to 20 years depending on quality of metals and battery health 🤔 Edit: that if you remove the battery from the device of course
I think they need to fix the whole steam deck to tv thing, mine looks terrible regardless of the settings i try to put on it. I use it only for tv because it feels so big in my hands and i have big hands. Fix the steam deck asap.
Aya neo sucks. I am not surprised by their abysmal sales. Their produts are too expensive, quality control is spotty and post sales support is awful. It took them 6 months to solve an issue I had with a unit that I got broken on arrival. I will never buy anything from them again. That said, my device is actually a good device and I like it, and it has a great screen. Is the best screen I have (my device is the 1200p aya neo geek 1s)
Something I do have to add is that price wise, you can get an Ayn Odin 2 for around the same price as a switch, and it'll run a lot of switch games and a ton of other systems like PS2 that would never run on the switch. The switch isn't physically strong enough to run that system. Same goes for the steam deck or the original rog ally, actually. The pain point in this case is acquiring the games and emulators.
Yes exactly. I have people arguing exactly the opposite. But you're right, something like the Odin 2 is so versatile. My Odin 2 mini is at the post office. I just need to rustle up a crazy customs fee!
I think the reason the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro vids might be getting more traction is the PS2 emulation. 1. There's clearly a market for snes, gba, mega drive and arcade emulation but its a bit more niche than PS2, Gamecube, XBox, Dreamcast - both in terms of the explosion of home console gaming but also the age of the people who played them. PS2 released in 2000 and lasted 13 years. That entire pre teen generation is now mid thirties, early forties, still working, potentially with disposable income and the PS2 nostalgia hit is massive. 2. While you can emulate on steam deck, hacked switch, those devices also have the capability to play more modern titles, so great if you already own one, but you wouldn't purchase one just for PS2 emulation (unless you had loads of money). You mention the Ayn unit sales - I think this is why. Its a very expensive device for high end android gaming and emulation. 3. The above mentioned devices are portable, not pocketable. For plane journeys, hotels, holidays etc. they are fantastic. Whipping out your steam deck on the daily commute is less appealing, whereas RP4P (or the Anbernic RG556) bringing PS2 on the go in that small form factor at a reasonable price is huge for the market i think they're appealing to
Hehe. I am posting my progress on another channel. How deep down the rabbit hole are you? Because the first step is definitely to get a controller and start practicing on a simulator.
I think the H700 devices are kind of overrated, and it all has to do with that chip. It doesn't perform that much better than the Rockchips we already had, and as someone who went from the original RG35XX to the Plus model, I was incredibly disappointed to find that firmwares now boot **slower**, there are audio glitches, and the performance improvements are negligible. Anbernic did an amazing job with the exteriors of these devices, but dropped the ball (imo) with the specs.
What is retro is a really good question - like im looking at ps3 and xbox360 feeling they are still modern, but are they retro now. My mind was blown when ps2 and gamcube can be emulated on mobile devices. New processors will come and let us emulate that stuff soon enough on a small device and it will be awesome
Hey. Well the tour video was along the same thought process: something creative to break from my normal vids. So in a few weeks I will do a more cinematic video with a bit of vlogging and some voiceover of the studio but with a thought provoking message. Still thinking about what to say. I had an idea but didn't write it down and forgot!
Albert Kim the drone guy was talking about this 2-3 years ago and he was right about the FPV drones. I never thought about it as far as retro consoles.
Come to the west coast and fly your drone here. You will like it here .(Langebaan,Saldanha area) As for your vid. Awesome discussion video.. I believe it's kinda reminiscent of the ps 2 days where weird games were made and the market was big and crazy , with all sorts of ideas were done. I think devices will become cheaper and better but it will not be at a break neck speed like Anbernic or Powkiddy is doing now. I also feel low end devices will either have to start becoming better or dirt cheap as now there now too many choices.
Very true. And YES the west coast is great for drone flying, except for the wind hey?! But ya I'd love to fly over the ocean and when the flowers are blooming.
I mean the future really seems to be just pushing to be able to play newer and newer systems. At what point is that not retro? Is PS3 retro? Either way I just ordered a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and I'm excited to get it.
There's absolutely no need in the slightest for the retro handheld market to even think about Windows. That's honestly the worst future imo. Keep that pile away from my cool fun systems I'm enjoying my nostalgia on. Please.
@@adinwalls also no, imo. Linux is more than capable. It simply takes a community investing in something to improve it. The steamdeck wouldn't have made it to where it is without community involvement in all the projects it utilizes - Arch, glorious egg roll, etc. Sure you can run windows on it but why would you of you're not playing some MMO shooter that requires massively invasive anticheat, or one of the few other that seem to simply refuse to allow it help their game become supported on Linux. But often GE still comes to the rescue there. I think the steamdeck competitors have it on hardware, not the fact they run windows. But also they're more expensive with a worse OS so whatever gets favorite fun to boot, I guess.
Adin, at 0:53 you show a custom made back shell for the pow kiddy vertical. I NEED THAT SHELL!!! How can I order it at pcbways, gimme url and cad file?
Hey. I was in the middle of working on that and stopped. As soon as I have it sorted out I will make a vid about it and share the files (I don't have them yet).
i think they still have room to grow, it will always be a niche market with some high to low interest according to how gaming is generally doing. there will always be a market, how big tho, that is the question and maybe it will weed out the weak ones that aren't producing good products in the first place.
Well to go back to my comparison, the generic poor quality toy drones are still selling. But I think what we have going for us is that (a) gaming is huge and (b) we have very serious companies like Retroid, Anbernic and AYN fighting for market share. So it's already a much healthier market than my drone analogy.
I think if powkiddy can source something like t606/t610 or some other cheaper older phone chip and sell it under 100$ with a 16:9 display it could be very awesome for indie android games and psp etc I think now that we have all these perfect 4:3 retro devices in 50-70$ range the 100$ range could be more android devices maybe wishful thinking idk 😛 I really dont get why there aren't more tho there must be so many old phone chips to recycle way more than linux arm chips 🤔 also they should make a long vertical tall handheld it would be awesome for ds emulation even 16:9 tall isnt massive black bars for ds vertically I'll yap more, I think the 35xx might die, 35xxh might die (40xx better), rg cube is gonna die too, 28xx might die imo sp and 40xx wont die
Anbernic and other heldheld makers are flooding the market with handhelds that have the same specs but different form factors.this needs to stop so people can enjoy what they have now and not have the fear of missing out when yet another handheld gets released
nah people need to just control themselves. I like the different form factors where I know exactly what I get performance-wise regardless of the shape. This also makes it easy to develop for all of them.
Retro gaming has a dim future unless we do some serious reform on copyright laws. Copyrights need to expire after, like, 10 years. Then things can actually be preserved properly.
Interesting. Yes. We're sitting with a massive library of licensed games and games from studios that closed down, and nobody's taking responsibility for them (not sure of I have that exactly right but that's how I understand it). How great would it be to have a legal library that we can all access and develop stores for to run on out firmwares.
Haha. Yes there is. His name is Joshua Bardwell. And in terms of drones it's a MASSIVE learning curve if you've just decided this is what you want. If you want to fly like I was, buy a Radiomaster pocket and start practicing on LiftOff on Steam. It takes a long time to actually learn to fly on there, then buy something cheap. I started on the DarwinFPV baby ape. But if you don't want to learn all that simply buy a DJI Avata.
That’s an interesting topic and deserves a more extended and insightful reflection. What you think about future developments of handhelds might be right, but that is only one portion of “retro gaming.” The crucial aspect of retro gaming is precisely “gaming”. That is, the experience of people playing by pushing buttons or pads and moving control sticks in front of a screen to interact with a world contained inside the “games” (program + physical media); and the affective experience of mesmerizing joy involved in such interaction. That affect is crucial because now we, the first generations to be raised with “gaming” as part of our everyday childhood, experience it as nostalgia. And we now have the purchasing power to sustain a pseudo-industry of devices and software that links into our nostalgia. We, of course, also are at the right technological moment to do so. But along with the development of devices is that of software to play games, that has increasingly become more social (which also probably reveals our need to interconnect through a experience with which we are throughly familiar and comfortable), and of new games that embrace the “retro” as an aesthetic. Also, the new”retro” ales part of the education of young developers (from Minecraft to Arduboy). So, there’s a lot more to talk about retro gaming but this is too much already for a YT comment.
If anyone wants to start following me (Adin) in my FPV journey, this is my channel. Don't expect the same level of production as my gaming channel!!
Actually really enjoyed the drone footage and was pleasantly surprised that you already have a channel devoted to it. Instant subscribe!

One of the things that a "switch experience" can't give me is specifically android gaming. More and more "mobile" games are requiring better and better devices, but phones aren't always the best way to play them.

Whipping out your steam deck on the daily commute is less appealing, whereas RP4P (or the Anbernic RG556) bringing PS2 on the go in that small form factor at a reasonable price is huge for the market i think they're appealing to
Good points!
Crazy, I’ve been on the fence of whether or not to buy a drone and you go off and show yours.
Hehe. I am posting my progress on another channel. How deep down the rabbit hole are you? Because the first step is definitely to get a controller and start practicing on a simulator.
I think the Radiomaster Pocket is probably the best beginner controller right now.
I agree
I think someday one of these Retro Handheld companies will start making Steam OS devices at really low prices, and that will be interesting.
I wouldn't be surprised if Anbernic aren't working on that already
You should buy DJI AVATA2 or DJI NEO. HD FPV is easy on the eyes.
I'd rather build my own HD quad.
What is retro is a really good question - like im looking at ps3 and xbox360 feeling they are still modern, but are they retro now. My mind was blown when ps2 and gamcube can be emulated on mobile devices. New processors will come and let us emulate that stuff soon enough on a small device and it will be awesome
Hey man. Yes that's definitely the next frontier. PS3 specifically is doing very well.
What is a cheap and fun entry level drone to get if I have never used one?
A) great video. B) is this what the studio tour video concept evolved into?
Hey. Well the tour video was along the same thought process: something creative to break from my normal vids. So in a few weeks I will do a more cinematic video with a bit of vlogging and some voiceover of the studio but with a thought provoking message. Still thinking about what to say. I had an idea but didn't write it down and forgot!
As a severe adhd person this format did not work for me. I couldn’t pay attention to any of the two topics.
Curious what region of South Africa this is? Looks very nice.
It's the Western Cape. Very green. Lots of mountains.
Albert Kim the drone guy was talking about this 2-3 years ago and he was right about the FPV drones. I never thought about it as far as retro consoles.
Well we will see what happens!
I've watched alot of Albert's stuff
I didn't know you FPV!! Me too, I love me some FPV. I've flown off and on since 2017!!
I love my 360 Go, they're a great little action cam!!
Come to the west coast and fly your drone here. You will like it here .(Langebaan,Saldanha area)
As for your vid.
Retro handless ftw 😊
Hehe yes!
I mean the future really seems to be just pushing to be able to play newer and newer systems. At what point is that not retro? Is PS3 retro? Either way I just ordered a Retroid Pocket 4 Pro and I'm excited to get it.
Dude, you ever tried a Mediatek Helio G99 android with Backbone One? That's a much better future than all these Chinese junk!
There's absolutely no need in the slightest for the retro handheld market to even think about Windows. That's honestly the worst future imo. Keep that pile away from my cool fun systems I'm enjoying my nostalgia on. Please.
Hehe, well I meant more in terms of handhelds in general when I mentioned windows
Sweet, I think it’s starting with pilot wings
Are you referring to the drone flying?
@@adinwalls yes, now that I finished the video. I loved the style and the change up from talking heads when making the DJI comparisons to Anbernic
Thanks Michael. Yes it's something I've thought about alot since starting this. The comparison is just so similar.
i think they still have room to grow, it will always be a niche market with some high to low interest according to how gaming is generally doing. there will always be a market, how big tho, that is the question and maybe it will weed out the weak ones that aren't producing good products in the first place.
Well to go back to my comparison, the generic poor quality toy drones are still selling. But I think what we have going for us is that (a) gaming is huge and (b) we have very serious companies like Retroid, Anbernic and AYN fighting for market share. So it's already a much healthier market than my drone analogy.
They will start developing more games for android & ios & the phone will become the place people go for gaming
Ya we will see!
I'd love to see something like the RP4 with SteamOS on it.
I wouldn’t. The screen is too small. If you want to try it out though, you can put Steam Link on your phone and use a controller.
I think if powkiddy can source something like t606/t610 or some other cheaper older phone chip and sell it under 100$ with a 16:9 display it could be very awesome for indie android games and psp etc I think now that we have all these perfect 4:3 retro devices in 50-70$ range the 100$ range could be more android devices maybe wishful thinking idk 😛
I really dont get why there aren't more tho there must be so many old phone chips to recycle way more than linux arm chips 🤔
also they should make a long vertical tall handheld it would be awesome for ds emulation even 16:9 tall isnt massive black bars for ds vertically
I'll yap more, I think the 35xx might die, 35xxh might die (40xx better), rg cube is gonna die too, 28xx might die
imo sp and 40xx wont die
Anbernic and other heldheld makers are flooding the market with handhelds that have the same specs but different form factors.this needs to stop so people can enjoy what they have now and not have the fear of missing out when yet another handheld gets released
nah people need to just control themselves. I like the different form factors where I know exactly what I get performance-wise regardless of the shape. This also makes it easy to develop for all of them.
Unfortunately what you just described is probably exactly what they're counting on!
Just fully utilize what you already have.
I actually love these different form factors. It gives people more options.
I keep buying them. There is something in the plastic that makes you addicted. China!
Hehe yup
How long until Anbernic makes a system for modern games?
My prediction is that a Windows device is already in development.
That’s for wasting everyone’s time with the clickbait thumbnail
I love ps1 on my anbernic rg350m
Yes!
Any drones your recommend to look into or youtubers you recommend for drones? Is their a Russ equivalent person for drones 😂
It's not cheap but the Avata 2 is some of the best for a beginner.
@@adinwalls Wow thank you, appreciate these recommendations.
What these devices need is to be AI. Everything needs AI, even AI.
Also Big Data, the Blockchain and crypto.
Lol. K.
Australia or is it New Zealand? Beautiful! Where is old Zealand?
South Africa. What made you think it was Aus/NZ?
@@adinwalls the trees made me think it was Australia. My bad.🤣
@antiantifa886 you may be onto something. Some of our trees are alien plants from Australia ☺️
