Remember. When the green gold is growing, keep mowing!!!
Below is an example of one of my quotes. Feel free to copy and paste, if it helps one person I will be over the moon.......
Quote ..............
Thank you for allowing me to provide you with a free no obligation quote today.
Regarding the two lawned areas to the front and rear of your property.
I will strim where necessary, ie the edges, around the border lines then mow and leaf blow the immediate area to give a tidy finish.
All grass waste is to be placed into bags and then into your bins.
All work is carried out by myself and is done to an extremely high standard. I work alone.
I use petrol rotary lawn mowers and professional equipment.
The price per cut is £.....
However the initial cut will be £..... as it will need strimming and cut three times at different heights, reducing the height as I go.
I mow fortnightly from mid March until late October/ first week in November, weather permitting. Approximately 17 cuts per year.
Payment is required on completion of the job , cash or bank transfer.
Please let me know if this meets your needs.
The first available space is next Friday, then every two weeks thereafter, weather permitting.
I always message the day before I mow.
Kind regards.
Rob.

What do you do on the off season?
It still amazes me how many people can’t see the value in manual skilled labour. Well said fella!
Thanks for the comment and supporting the channel.👍🏻
when you get into your 60s and your body is broken and worn out you remember why they call it manual labour. I'd never swap one minute of it for sitting behind a desk playing office politics. So what if my knee hurts. 🤷♂️
I used to be a labourer and a hod carrier and honestly felt like people just looked down at me all the time which was a shame as i was working really hard.
Amazing that you write a quote that you share with as very useful for me . I learning every day. And I want to improve.
Glad to hear that
This is quickly becoming my favourite Channel on UA-cam and I don't even have that deep an interest in mowing grass. Love hearing the stories and you have a great personality. Wholesome Channel. Cheers Rob!
Thanks Dan, appreciate your comment. All the best.
spot on regarding the pricing ....
Thank you .
Enjoying your videos from Birmingham Alabama USA

Thanks Simon.
You are so right.
Thanks.
Rob, really enjoyed your chat… all makes a lot of sense. “Keep on the Grass”
Thanks John.
It is a complete myth that the amount of hard work you do in life will equal the pay you receive. I cant believe I was so naive to have believed that when i was younger.
Far better off without customers like that. Never feels good I'm sure but you know your stuff and he ignored you so cheerio :D Onwards and upwards
Thanks for watching and your comment.👍🏻
Hi 👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋👋
Hello and thanks for watching.
Have been exploited myself at certain points
In my life, was a general builder for 20 years.
The money got less and less, the job became
A struggle frankly. 2 tons of tools in the back
Of the van. Up to 6 hours a day in traffic.
Bought a ruin of a place in Wales, rebuilt it.
Am now a handyman, gardener in powys,
Ceredigion. Should have done it years ago.
Nice video mate. 👍
Beautiful video wise man will do well
Thanks for your kind words.👍🏻
👍👍👍☺️ keep doing what is best for you 🙂
Thank you.
Nice honest video..
Good luck 🤞🥰
Thank you . 👍🏻
Totally 👍🏽. I done it before. Sometimes you need to cut ✂️ lose. Nah don't be annoyed with yourself. You have to get along with yourself bro👌😆
Cheers Peter , great comment.👍🏻
It's true, certain customers don't fit. Work is a transaction. Also true that sometimes in life, knowing is not enough! Spot on.
Thanks for your comment and supporting the channel.👍🏻
Same thing here in Oklahoma, she wants it to the dirt wet and tall crazy.
Thanks for watching John. All the best from Newcastle.
This is great. Thinking about starting up next year for the spring. One thing I’m concerned about is quoting.
I’m not a gardener but you talk a lot of sense and for what’s its worth are thinking about this right. Best wishes for the future.
Thanks Steve, appreciate your comment. 👍🏻
Well said. Yes, you are worth more. All the best.
Thanks for sharing your experience, history, and adaptiveness for your business to maximize your coin whilst minimising your graft.
My pleasure!
Good luck
Stumbled across your video 😀 wishing you all the very best. ☺️ I think you might very well smash it. What a top bloke!
First video I've seen from this guy. He seems nice!
Welcome aboard and thank you 🙏
Really interesting video and thoroughly enjoyed. 👌
Thanks.👍🏻
I hear ya fella. I’ve been in this game for nearly 40 years, and sometimes you just can’t help some people.
Thanks Mike. Appreciate your comment. All the best.
Good for you
Cheers
Hi, I’ve just subscribed to your channel and I thoroughly enjoy your vids, I must say you talk a load of sense,
Thanks Stevie, appreciate that.👍🏻
You shouldn’t be having to water any lawns this year. It’s pissed it down all summer. You cannot account for arseholes mate.
Count your blessings. Some folk don’t be told. Just rejoice you don’t return. Forget him.
Thanks Noddy, appreciate your comment.
Good advice for anyone
I don’t need my grass cut and I live in Aberdeen but just wanted to say……. ‘ you are a gentleman’
Appreciated Alan👍🏻
If customers aren't willing to pay you what your worth, do you really want to work for them?
Well said good vid.
Thanks Gary . All the best.
Great video… everything came across really well…
Thanks for watching and your comment.👍🏻
They always know better 🤯🤷🏻♂️🤫😂👍🏻🏴
Should do what I do,pour a couple of cans of beer over it at night guaranteed to come up half cut.
I have no idea why I was recommended a gardening video but I was enthralled from start to finish!
Go get that clover round Sir!
Thanks Jack, all the best.
Brilliant ! Absolutely agree. Terry from S & T Gardening Services. Subscribed and looking forward to more of your videos. 👍
Thanks Terry. Great to have you on my journey. 👍🏻
So British. A shining example of an Englishman. Hope you get to your daily rate boss. If I lived in Gateshead and I had a garden I pay you just to come round for a chat.
Thank you 🙏
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices Ah man you still up! Get to bed dude it's 12.30. What a gem you are. Much blessing.
An eye 👀 opener!! Thanks for your video Maxwells Grass Cutting Services, keep smiling great video!
Thanks for the comment, appreciated.👍🏻
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices No problem Rob you gave very good pointers
YES try to think what PRICE would you want to pay if a lawn man was going to do the job.
It winds me up when corporate types defend high wages and bonuses because "the best people need to be paid the best to motivate them", and then don't apply this to working class people - either shafting them or complaining if they want a decent wage - be it tradespeople, factories, nursing, care, railways, fire or police or whatever.
Great comment, thanks for watching.👍🏻
Very good point
I was a self employed builder for nearly 5 decades and i quickly learned the difference between a Quote and an Estimate and when to use either one....respect to all the self employed...a way of working Everybody should experience for at least 5yrs.
I agree mate, thanks for the comment.👍
Especially politicians
@The flying Handbag a quote is a price that is agreed for work specified and if a contractor tried charging more after job then customer would have legal grounds for a dispute and would win if went to court.
An estimate can change depending on any hidden issues discovered when job is undertaken and gives room for contractor to charge more into the job.
As a customer you would want a quote.
Just subed. We share so many of the same probs. I only do about 10 gardens a week but still seems we have the same issues
People sometimes equal problems. Thanks for watching and your comment. All the best.
This is brilliant, I’m a cleaner and handy woman and I get jobs that are 20 miles away, take an hour and only charge the same rate. I’m going to get smart and see what happens next. Thank you
Thanks Sarah, good for you, work smarter not harder. Take care.👍🏻
Thanks Rob, just found your channel today -started watching from the beginning -great content !
Thanks Ralph, welcome to the channel.
Nice bloke 👍
Thanks for watching Peter.👍🏻
I can relate to this. I got a new job and it was a large garden. It started with a big lawn cut and 2 beds weeding and trimming all that. Anyway fine I got the quote in and all was going fine for a couple month , then the customer wanted 2 new beds put in both about 4 meters by 2 meters, I told the customer that it’s going to ad an extra hour onto the time we already agreed weekly.
Well that’s when it went down hill. She didn’t think she had to pay for the extra maintenance on the weeding and trimming, time is money and like you said not all customers fit sometimes you just don’t click with each other,
Your so right, there are times we need to walk away and replace. A valuable lesson.👍🏻
Working class 👌👍
A new friend of mine asked me how to fix their blinds. Wondering what's wrong I had a look and said to myself they are very similar to mine.
So I put my thumb and index finger on the top lever and pulled it down, job done the look on both their faces was very embarrassing to them.
Both in the Banking industry
Did you charge them? I hope there was a bottle of wine in it for you.👍🏻
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices don't drink just a helping hand, good video's.
Damn I have had customers just like this .One kept weed and feeding it but never listened ,.So glad we parted company this was half na cre. Never easy as its always raining or super hot .
As long as it's done in the right way on both sides it's really not a problem, you dealt with it well and so did he. Like you say, sometimes it just doesn't work for both parties but it's how you deal with it.
Thank you
Lovely 👍🏼 ✨
That's is really good advice, I think that can be taken in to a lot of defrent trades, good one Rob
Work smarter not harder 😉
Thanks again Sean.
Honest sweat n hard work is fulfilling and if people don't wanna pay a going rate to make your living worthwhile then are those customers worth having, it's guys like you who keep this country going, great job
Thanks Lee, appreciate your comment and supporting the channel.👍🏻
Im an Architect and have similar issues. Some of the public think you're a municipal service and not a private business.
Thanks for watching and your comment.
tough market, you don’t want to price your self out market but make still make a decent living.
It is tough James, thanks for watching and your comment.
Work smarter not Harder Rob. Been trying to get the balance right doing plastering for years. Finally down to a regular 4 day week earning the same as doing 5 days. Charge what your worth, if others wanna work for pennies then let them. Good vid marra. Keep ahad 👍
Thanks for watching and your comment.👍🏻
An old boy once told me “don’t be frightened to charge - customer is not forced to accept it”
Great comment.👍🏻
Came up on my feed, I'm a gas engineer and I feel this way about jobs and customers, Great video👍
Top Video Your 100% right in what you are saying if your good they will pay your prices..Dont give your time out for peanuts.
Good video Rob .... I m asked to do lawns and usually by older people because I talk to them . Starts off with the lawn then soon becomes " could you just do this bush " quick while ur here , then a stake here , then fix that broken slab then cut whatever . Always won't take you a minute !! They love their add ons for a cup of tea , never more cash . I m proof we're tooooo soft . They're crafty manipulative and know how to play the " poor me card !"
Thanks for watching Desy, your so right about the older generation. I tend to avoid them.
We are a business not a charity.👍🏻
I pick small lawns 20 quid a pop . customers love it.easy money
Sounds great 👍🏻
How does it work with uinloading and loading, VAT and travel?
Pricing jobs is so difficult. It's a mystery. Good luck mate.
Great video. Perfect common sense 👍.
Thanks Allan, appreciate your comment and watching the videos.👍🏻
Basically some customers are just tight and hate to think your having a easy ride for your money. Working in Yorkshire I've experienced many a tight person 😂
Thanks for watching and your comment Dave. All the best.
I stumbled upon your channel and liked what you said. I'm not a gardener but I did have a cleaning business for 7 years and I used to do exactly what your planning. Keep customers close maximize your time efficiently and charge what your worth....it works ...go for it xxxx
As a gardener in Australia for 30 years, I agree with all you have said.
Some good lessons for newbies. Your sweat and graft is worth
a fair reward.
Thanks Leon, appreciate your comment.👍🏻
Premium customers will always pay Premium prices mate. Excellent vid Rob.
Thanks David, appreciate your comment.👍🏻
You are a natural on camera. Good luck with the future. You would not want to cut my lawn. Takes 4 hours on a sit on!
Thanks for that Jane, a four hour job using a ride on sounds amazing. Take care.👍🏻
This is a great video, and applicable to all one-man bands, not just gardeners.
Like it or not, you are a business, so treat it like a business. It's not a hobby, nor charity.
If you're doing a great job, turn up when you say you will customers will be loyal to you.
Good luck for the future 👏
Thanks Mandy.
It comes down to money thats life, i don't know what you charge but i gave up the gardening lark 5 years back as the money wasn't there and to achieve it you almost feel like you are forcing a customer to pay and thats not something im comfortable with
I stumbled on this video by chance …. I am not a gardener, I am not self employed and I certainly don’t live close enough for you to cut my grass (Devon) but I really liked this video. You are an honest hard working gentleman an you would be first on my list to call if I was in the market for a cut!!,
Thanks Kev, appreciate your comment and supporting the channel.👍🏻
I got the same as a programmer a client wanted three months worth of work done for the price of a week lol
When I had my old business I often outsourced programming on upwork and sites like that. I much preferred the fixed price for a job, and rarely went for the cheapest quote. I was often surprised at getting a $200 dollar php job back within a couple of hours from A US programmer, but still good value because it could be out on the website live the same day and earning money a week early. I learned a long time ago that if you can't do something yourself you can't under-value the work of someone who can just get on with it with no fuss. I am handy with PHP and Zend as a layman, but what would take me a month takes a pro programmer half an hour. Charge more, work smart. Programmers who give bang for the bucks are in short supply and we clients do recommend.
This is a fab video. And can be used within many different businesses. Sounds like a good plan. Have a good week.
Thanks zac, you too mate , all the best.👍🏻
Some customers are just golden, good as gold and others are a complete nightmare. It isn't the garden it's the customer. We should all strive for a better quality of customer 😂
Your so right.👍🏻
@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices customer over garden any day. I've had some beautiful technically gardens with God awful clock watching non paying customers and some postage stamp gardens where it's cups of tea, friendly smiles and biscuits and tips. Incredible.
Great video, great advice , iv not prized to much work but find it difficult . Dont wont loss the job get it so wrong , but like i said i dont do it that much . Sure it will come better in time .
New to the channal enjoying it , it a real great source of ideas ,inspiration and great attiude to life and bussiness. Thank you
Thanks Barry appreciate your comment. All the best.
Good video mate. I’m in. the. same business.
Thanks mate, appreciate your comment.👍🏻
I find that most of my customers are people that used to do their own gardens.Due to old age they can’t do the graft anymore so are willing to pay for a good job.I get really close to my customers, ringing if they’re not feeling to well etc, keeping up the rapport. The weather this year has been shit but I don’t beat myself up anymore, they understand the weather issue. Also, during the winter I do jobs inside their houses, changed my business card to offer this service and have already got a few jobs booked for winter, cleaning, bit of painting, shelf fixing etc etc.Good luck Max,wish you all the best,Andy
Thanks Andy, good luck with your business and thanks for watching.👍🏻
Brilliant video 👍
Thanks appreciate your comment.👍🏻
Good video, not even interested in gardening but some great advise 👍
I'm also a self employed gardener 7 years now, what I've learnt like you said in this video some clients don't fit with the way you work
and its always tough to loose a client but there's others waiting for you.
Cheers Stu, pleased it’s not just me.👍🏻
What a lovely man. Very well explained and I wish you the very best of luck. Subscribed as well.
i'm a shiner. (Window cleaner) Handy tip:
Keep looking for more punters even though your books are full.

Good advice,I’m currently setting up after being unhappy in my job,I already have a couple of good customers and will be canvassing in the same area after your advice👍
Good luck with your new business.👍🏻
Just watching this again after your latest post. 18/01/2024. lol. Still stuck to your journey .. .. ..
I am trying to. Thank you.
Not sure why your video was presented to me. However I watched it & I must say you have a great personality & presence Rob. It makes this video very watchable. I also noticed you did it in one take which is very skillful. You are a natural for UA-cam.
Thanks Eddie, your very kind.👍🏻
Great message. I think the same applies to anyone self employed, it's taken me 3 years to start thinking like this.
Me and you both.👍🏻
I thought what’s Al Murray doing gardening 😂
Al Murray, I am far too slim and better looking.
All the best.👍🏻
Landscape gardener here, 21 years.. Great video, great content.. 💯👌💯
Cheers Mark, appreciate your support.👍🏻
Not sure why I watched this but it resonated with me. I am in my fifties and my grandad who worked as a general tradesman was exactly like you, who worked his fingers to the bone for essentially scraps and the relatively wealthy clients profited on his lack of business acumen. No one wants to be ripped off and that is on both sides of the fence. Good for you for not over charging but for taking a fair enough amount for you to live on for the graft you do. I am down south so too far for you lol.
Thanks for the comment and watching. All the best.👍🏻
Hi mate love your video and honesty. I was doing the same kind of model. Question is if you could do a vodka or answer is. As you say I do your cut fortnightly, brilliant you start with a while scheme. Then later you get ones saying oh I found someone cheaper and then it's a chain reaction. Fair enough if you drive but alas I don't. So I'm out of business and get a full time job. The person that done it cheaper was charging more after a while then becoming more unreliable and then the phone calls started. So looks like I'll be a busy boy when it's my days off 🤣🤣
Pleased it’s working out for you James. All the best.👍🏻
New subscriber here from South Wales. Great helpful video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching James, welcome. All the best.
