Would you be able or interested to look at a cold case that crossed from Edinburgh to Cumbria? A 55 year old grandma called Betty Brown from Edinburgh went missing, and was found having been SA'd and murdered in a woods near an MoD in Longtown, just across the border from Gretna. It was in about 2008, but theres never been a conclusion, I'm worried she is being completely forgotten.

I stayed at an old wooden hotel on Star Island directly across from Smuttynose Island and learned about this tragedy there. It gave me a weird feeling. It is a cold, barren isolated place. You wouldn't think of anyone building a home these. The 3rd floor of the hotel was supposedly haunted . I never felt comfortable there , was always tired yet had difficulty sleeping. A weird place altogether...

If you stayed at the Oceanic Hotel it’s original structure was being constructed at the time of the murders! In fact Maren actually tried waving to the workers for help in the morning but they didn’t realize she was in distress and thought she was waving to be friendly.

What this story shows is how risky it is to live alone in a VERY Isolated place. NO neighbors to run to for help. NO neighbors looking out for each other. Living on that island alone was even more risky than living alone in a dense forest because the island looks bare and someone, like this murderer, can spy on you for hours before they make their move. If you live in an isolated place Anywhere, you're Crazy if you don't have a BIG Gun. It might have even saved the ladies in this tragic tale.

Yeah. I have a theory on the Hintekaifeck case. I think Herr Grubber committed a crime so heinous that the killer decided the entire family had to die in order to punish Herr Grubber for the sin. There is a reason why the concept of a parent’s sin haunting a family down generations is common in the Bible and Greek mythology. I believe the foreign newspaper reported found in the days leading up to the murder will be the key to understanding the killer’s motive.

It just goes to show that you may live as isolated as you want, but evil can still find you. If you go on Google Earth to Smuttynose Island, you can see the cottage, which not only still stands, but looks as if it is well maintained. Perhaps it is something of a museum on this horrible tragedy. Both deaths were horrendous, but what Karen went through is beyond barbaric.

The Hontvet house burned down in 1908, possibly earlier. You can see some foundations and a hand painted sign that indicates the spot where it stood. There are two surviving cottages on the island, one dates from the mid 20th century and the other from between 1770-1800

This is local to my hometown! Well, off the coast haha. It’s a historically spooky place overall, despite its beauty. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (Kittery ME) has a legendary past, including the now-abandoned Naval prison. Across the Piscataqua in Portsmouth NH proper, a number of ghost tours are offered along with an entire historical walking museum. Also, in the last decade there’s been incentives to promote awareness of the area’s historical involvement as a port for slave trading, as well as local mistreatment of Black citizens for domestic servitude; this is following the chance discovery of mass unmarked graves of Black victims only a few feet under the modern streets of downtown Portsmouth. It’s crazy!

Nothing in the World tastes as good as a Maine lobster, especially when they give you a cup of melted butter to dip the meat in before you eat it. @@toriviruette5 I was wondering about that, too! I found some transcripts of the court proceedings...
I guess she was worried about hiding, because she figured the dog would follow her and start barking again, and give away her location to Louis.
So she may have left the dog in the barn? Otherwise, I'm not quite sure how she avoided this issue by hiding in the rocks, when the dog could've easily followed her (as it had been originally)

      @DarkCuriosities  2 роки тому +40

According to what we read, Maren took the dog with her when she hid on the island. Thankfully the dog was okay 🥰 Also in response to the original comment - that is correct. Appledore is within sight of Smuttynose; Cedar Island, connected to Smuttynose by a breakwater, could have been occupied by one family as well. I spent five summers of my life on Star Island. The third floor is allegedly haunted; the ghost stories from all of the Shoals are famous. Luckily, the current summer activities on Appledore and Star are fun and cheerful. I've always felt at home there, 7 miles out to sea from Rye and10 miles by boat from Portsmouth. I started visiting Star Island in 1960 with my family for a few weeks vacation each year. Now I'm 70.

This crime shows something very clearly. Murderers kill for the fun of it. He had no need to murder these women, he could have overpowered them, taken the money and gone. Maybe he told himself that he wanted money but in reality he wanted to get some thrills by killing women. A psychopath for sure. The measly amount of money was just a pretext.

He might not have even known how many people were there since it had been a while since he lived there; could be only Maren or could even be more people including men there. I think he meant to sneak in and just burgle some loot, not expecting someone to be in the kitchen. Then he felt he had to kill them just to keep his identity hidden. This happens all the time when thieves get caught by people who arent' able to fight as well as them. Not saying he had a "good" excuse to kill them, but that doesn't appear to be the motive for going to the island.

I didn't know what the truth was for several years until I saw something one day about it and learned the truth. The movie is different than the real story. At least back then justice was served and the murderer was hung. He never murdered anyone else after that. Definitely a deterrent.

Wow. Thought I had heard this one but I think that was another similar tragedy. This was so lame and horrifying! 2 decent hard working generous people died because of one greedy stupid man. More shameful human behavior. Thank GOD no little children or innocent animals hurt this time. Well done. Thank you DC💔🦌

A hatchet and an axe aren't the same thing a hatchet is a one handed tool but an axe is a two handed tool.
Yep the size of the tool matters lol

This seems very familiar; it's possibly part of the plot of a novel by Anita Shreve, made into a movie with actress Sarah Polley, though I can't remember the title. Well told. 👍🍍

What an odd collection of images you have chosen to illustrate this sorrowful story. Korean kimchi stew for a soup, whiskey being poured into a glass when you say beer. Any reason why?

Question. If they lived on the island alone and their Neighbors were on nearby islands, how were there children playing nearby? Also, if the 3 family men were in town on their boat how did 2 of them go back before the third? Sorry just confused. Brain can’t process those bits.

I don’t like the idea of being on an island without any way for help to readily get there in case anything goes wrong. I’ve seen Shutter (that movie about the federal agents being trapped on a mothballed Navy Seals training facility on an island with a killer who’s picking them off one by one), just sayin’. 😬

    • @Jolis_Parsec

Minor correction, the film was called “Mindhunters” and I apparently got the name “Shutter” from the film “Shutter Island” mixed up with the aforementioned film.
