I stayed at an old wooden hotel on Star Island directly across from Smuttynose Island and learned about this tragedy there. It gave me a weird feeling. It is a cold, barren isolated place. You wouldn't think of anyone building a home these. The 3rd floor of the hotel was supposedly haunted . I never felt comfortable there , was always tired yet had difficulty sleeping. A weird place altogether...
If you stayed at the Oceanic Hotel it’s original structure was being constructed at the time of the murders! In fact Maren actually tried waving to the workers for help in the morning but they didn’t realize she was in distress and thought she was waving to be friendly.
What this story shows is how risky it is to live alone in a VERY Isolated place. NO neighbors to run to for help. NO neighbors looking out for each other. Living on that island alone was even more risky than living alone in a dense forest because the island looks bare and someone, like this murderer, can spy on you for hours before they make their move. If you live in an isolated place Anywhere, you're Crazy if you don't have a BIG Gun. It might have even saved the ladies in this tragic tale.
Hahaha 😂 that's crazy because they were living there and I imagine having a garden would help save money..not to mention if they did,,I bet it was chocked full of wonderful things 🤔 but yes it may have been rocks..lol I live in Tennessee maybe 30 minutes southeast of Nashville and I couldn't imagine not having a garden! It was absolutely perfect during the Covid lockdown because I stayed there most of the time.
This case reminded me of the Hinterkaifeck massacre somehow. Especially that part when he casually prepared some food for himself after killing people. Chilling.
Yeah. I have a theory on the Hintekaifeck case. I think Herr Grubber committed a crime so heinous that the killer decided the entire family had to die in order to punish Herr Grubber for the sin. There is a reason why the concept of a parent’s sin haunting a family down generations is common in the Bible and Greek mythology. I believe the foreign newspaper reported found in the days leading up to the murder will be the key to understanding the killer’s motive.
Yes! I was wondering if it would turn out that he eventually escaped. May have been a good candidate for "the man from the train" who may or may not have perpetrated the Hinterkaifeck murders.
I genuinely can't get enough of your videos! Your narrations and accent are lovely. And the longer episodes are always a bonus. Thanks for the work you put into your content ❤
It just goes to show that you may live as isolated as you want, but evil can still find you. If you go on Google Earth to Smuttynose Island, you can see the cottage, which not only still stands, but looks as if it is well maintained. Perhaps it is something of a museum on this horrible tragedy. Both deaths were horrendous, but what Karen went through is beyond barbaric.
The Hontvet house burned down in 1908, possibly earlier. You can see some foundations and a hand painted sign that indicates the spot where it stood. There are two surviving cottages on the island, one dates from the mid 20th century and the other from between 1770-1800
This is local to my hometown! Well, off the coast haha. It’s a historically spooky place overall, despite its beauty. The Portsmouth Naval Shipyard (Kittery ME) has a legendary past, including the now-abandoned Naval prison. Across the Piscataqua in Portsmouth NH proper, a number of ghost tours are offered along with an entire historical walking museum. Also, in the last decade there’s been incentives to promote awareness of the area’s historical involvement as a port for slave trading, as well as local mistreatment of Black citizens for domestic servitude; this is following the chance discovery of mass unmarked graves of Black victims only a few feet under the modern streets of downtown Portsmouth. It’s crazy!

This case has always interested me. I can’t imagine the fear and horror the women faced, and I feel sure Maren suffered from survivor’s guilt for the rest of her life.
This crime shows something very clearly. Murderers kill for the fun of it. He had no need to murder these women, he could have overpowered them, taken the money and gone. Maybe he told himself that he wanted money but in reality he wanted to get some thrills by killing women. A psychopath for sure. The measly amount of money was just a pretext.
He might not have even known how many people were there since it had been a while since he lived there; could be only Maren or could even be more people including men there. I think he meant to sneak in and just burgle some loot, not expecting someone to be in the kitchen. Then he felt he had to kill them just to keep his identity hidden. This happens all the time when thieves get caught by people who arent' able to fight as well as them. Not saying he had a "good" excuse to kill them, but that doesn't appear to be the motive for going to the island.

13:19 15 bucks in 1873 money is worth just over 370 bucks in 2022 money, so the amount he stole isn't quite as "mere" as it sounds to us today. Certainly enough for a man on the run to put some distance between himself and the scene of the crime.

Question. If they lived on the island alone and their Neighbors were on nearby islands, how were there children playing nearby? Also, if the 3 family men were in town on their boat how did 2 of them go back before the third? Sorry just confused. Brain can’t process those bits.
I don’t like the idea of being on an island without any way for help to readily get there in case anything goes wrong. I’ve seen Shutter (that movie about the federal agents being trapped on a mothballed Navy Seals training facility on an island with a killer who’s picking them off one by one), just sayin’. 😬
Minor correction, the film was called “Mindhunters” and I apparently got the name “Shutter” from the film “Shutter Island” mixed up with the aforementioned film.

Maybe she’s still learning, relax.
The newspaper article apparently MISnamed the two female victims.
Question. If they lived on the island alone and their Neighbors were on nearby islands, how were there children playing nearby? Also, if the 3 family men were in town on their boat how did 2 of them go back before the third? Sorry just confused. Brain can’t process those bits.
Good question. There are a number of inconsistencies in this case.

If Marin was an only child with 2 half brothers, what do you mean that her sister moved to the island?🤔
Thanks!
